Ax gets sick while at a school dance.  His first symptom is partially demorphing.  He is suffering from yamphut, during which disease organisms gather in his Tria gland (in his brain! It keeps disease organisms away from the rest of his body) and eventually cause it to burst, which will kill him.  The Tria gland must be removed to save his life.   Since the Tria gland keeps diseases away from the rest of his body, what will protect Ax once its removed?

When Jake gets sick too, Ax explains that the yamphut will probably infect ALL the Animorphs, acting like the flu.  Yamphut is a very contagious strain of flu.  Why doesn't it spread through the entire school?  After all, Ax was at school when he got sick!

The animorphs were effected in different ways, and I believe Jake didn't really show symptoms until he was told it was contagious. This makes me think it was at least partially psychological. like maybe Andalites could catch it, so Ax said it was contagious, but it doesn't actually effect Humans as much as he thought it would. This explains why Cassie doesn't get it (besides plot armor, because it makes for a short book if everyone catches it bad).

So if anything, it might have effected some school kids mildly, and maybe one or two had to skip a day.

I got the feeling that the gland is like the Human appendix. Useful in some ways, but not a vital organ, and if/when something goes wrong it needs removing.

I was hoping that the yamphut would hit Visser Three!

Jake manifested symptoms while in the WATER PIPES!  I predict that the yamphut will spread throughout the city via the water supply!

After the surgery, Cassie tells Ax that he will need a few days to recover.  Why so?  Can't Ax repair the surgical damage right away by morphing and demorphing?

I predict that the first time Ax morphs and demorphs after his surgery, his Tria gland will grow right back!

After Cssie rescue Aftran the Yeerk from the Yeerk Pool, why doesn't she ask Erek the Chee if the Chee could liberate a portable Kandrona pool for Aftran to use?

How do we know that Ax's Tria gland didn't reappear the first time he morphed and demorphed after his surgery?

Maybe it did, but it wasn't a problem. Morphing has to do something to keep microorganisms in the right place, or you'd probably die every time you demorph.
The gland collects diease organism, so when you morph and demorph it keeps all the dangerous microbes, but also can't remove the threat of them bursting out.

Once you remove it however, maybe you get a brand new tria gland with whatever inherent organisms and Andalite has, not the whole swath of things collected over a life time of diease fighting.
Maybe
Something, something, oh crap I pissed everyone off again....
