Is a Nothlit's lifespan equal to that animals life span?
« on: July 14, 2014, 12:53:50 PM »
Noob here (again!) maybe I'm not reading close enough (very possible) or maybe it was never stated but my stupid question is... Is a Nothlit's life that of the being it once was like a human or a Yeerk or is it that of the animal (snake/hawk)?

The term is "newbie" not "noob", the latter makes it sound like you're more trollish than you are.

And I always assumed the it to be the animal morph's lifespan. But yeah, The Familiar was rather inconsistent with this.

My assumption is that they'd have the lifespan of the animal because physically, more or less biologically, they are that animal. Having a human/yeerk/whatever mind might give them a leg up sometimes, but I mean. A hawk isn't going to live to be 80 years old. It'd be physically impossible.

A nothlit should have the same lifespan since the only thing different than a regular animal is their mind, although they'll have a longer life expectancy since they'll be less likely to get killed from doing something stupid.

I . . . wouldn't hedge your bets on that, Donut. There are times when the human mind can be dumber than an animal mind. At least, if "World's Dumbest" is any indication. Then again, you did say "less likely" . . .

They live an animal's lifespan, this is brought up in #33 The Illusion. In Tobias' case, he'd probably live extra long by hawk terms because all the morphing he does keeps his body clean of injuries and disease, you know, if he wasn't hanging around spaceships playing bumper cars and stuff.

beginning of book 33. he sees this little poster that estimates the lifespans of birds of prey. and its depressing. the reason for this is that the lifespan of a morphed animal is the lifespan of the nothlit.
Btw I don't think their is anything trollish about the term noob... although I might not be the most knowlegable on that.

However old the animal is, and the approximate lifespan the animal usually has, that's about how long a nothlit will live. Probably on the high side, since Tobias is a sentient hawk, but he's not going to live another seventy years as a bird.

Does anybody think Tobias would eventually accept life and trap himself back in his human morph (or some other morph) to save himself from the hawk lifespan? I mean, if he didn't die in book 54, when Jake ordered to ram the ship?

Honestly after we find out his mother was alive, I figured he's become a Human nothlit after the war to be with her and Rachel. Though he would surely miss flying, I'm sure Marco would use his money to buy him whatever he wanted to take to the air again. Private helicopter, glider, and so forth.

If he didn't go off to die in a ship in front of The One, he probably would have just eventually died a hawk.

Gee I completely forgot about Loren... So he's just going to leave her??? Good lord... plus I never understood the Tobias-Rachel relationship. Was there really a reason for the two to be attracted to each other? Other than Rachel being beauty queen? But anyway, Rachel's friendship with Cassie and Cassie's relationship with Jake were also pretty forced...

my responses to everything I read in the order I read it:

yes. you live as long as the morphed animal.
I do not believe noob is worse than newbie.
yes, I agree you are less likely to get killed.
here is a bit of optimism: they did not all die when they hit the blade ship. that would have been dumb.
heck yes to the reason, and heck no to the beauty queen thing. he likes her because she likes him, which is more than he could ask for ask a bird who cannot smooch. I do not think any relationship was forced.

Yeah, always thought that was a pretty sad inevitability for Tobias.  I'm not sure how long bird of prey live, but assuming it's quite a lot less than humans it's pretty depressing.  I can't see him going human full-time unless Rachel was around post-war.

Person Of Interest re-watch.  Still stunning as ever.
