Dolphins - the whole story?
« on: March 06, 2011, 11:13:21 PM »
Ok, I've just seen an awesome documentary, and it explained a few things. First, let me tell you that before I get to the point.

In the documentary, it said dolphins are self-aware, that they can recognize themselves in a mirror and even have feelings. In fact, one dolphin rescue report had multiple witnesses where they formed a circle around some lifeguard swimmers when one of them got cut and a shark was around them. The dolphins FREAKING CALLED FOR REINFORCEMENTS and circled them for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES until the shark left and they could get back to shore. And TWO of them saw the shark, so there's no doubt that they were being protected.

So, here comes the point. I think KA did not do dolphins enough justice. Hell, she portrayed a FREAKING ORCA as more self-aware than a dolphin, and that was ghostwritten. This, to me, makes #4. The Message all the more unforgivable. Oh sure, she portrays them as highly intelligent, but that's really kind of vague.

Thoughts on this and how it pertains to Animorphs? And PLEASE, no one give me grief if this is in the wrong spot. I can't tell.

Dolphins are definitely one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Of course there are bad things about them as well as good. They like to kill porpoises for fun. :(

The question I'm asking is if KA didn't make them as smart as they should have been. And other things to discuss...

it's just a kid's story. Being both vague and correct at the same tome seems to be a fairly forgivable act.

The fact is that nobody really knows how animals think.  True, we're learning more about them all the time, but some of the information available now might not have been available when the books were written.  K.A. seems to go by the stereotypes of how we think of animals rather than how that animal actually probably thinks, unfortunately.  But, well, when you get down to it, our human perception of animals is really all we have to go on in the end, because until morphing technology is invented, we can't actually get into an animal's head.  To be honest, I think the description of the dolphin's instincts was perfectly acceptable given the information available at the time.

Of course, there are a few just-plain-KASUs.  Are ants and termites really as soulless as the books portray, while bees are seen as more like happy communists?  And why are some prey animals (lizard, shrew, squirrel) portrayed as so full of fear that it's almost crippling, while others (rat, mouse, rabbit) were much easier to handle?  Once you start analyzing the portrayal of animal instincts in the books, quite a few things start to fall apart.

And for that matter, elephant instincts were not portrayed nearly intelligent enough, even more so than the dolphins.  Elephants invent games, honor their dead and actually seem to recognize what 'death' means, and research suggests that they are even aware on some level of their precarious habitat situation and are depressed about it.  Yet there is hardly any mention on Rachel's part of her elephant morph being intelligent at all.

At the same time, how much can you really know about an animal that you can only turn into a couple of hours at a time? By comparrison, only a nothlit has any real conception of how an animal really thinks.

I think when you first morph an animal, it is a "us or them" competition. Basically, you have to suppress the animal instincts. Jake talks about "using" the hawk instints in one of the books. The line is something like "trust the hawk, the hawk knows how to fly."

I think that as you get more comfortable with a morph, you understand the animal better, having said that, it can change YOU too.

Tobias doesn't emote with his face because Hawks don't. I wonder if you also get personality changes.

My point is that understanding of stuff like intelligence doesn't come in a few hours. The dolphin's "happy" instincts are much stronger than they're "smart" instincts, so that is what the animorphs notice.

Perhaps if one had got stuck as a dolphin, they would have understood this better. We should ask Alftran, I'm sure she would have had some thoughts on this.

Maybe you can't morph self-awareness, only instincts? In which case Cassie's moralizing makes even less sense...

Actually if intelligence with a host was noticable, it would be with Human morphs. Self awareness doesn't come with a morph, and Cassie's "never morph sentient creatures" never made sense because none of the team were the type to use a person's body to commit a crime.

So dolphin intelligence probably just doesn't come with the morph, much like Human intelligence.

some do.  it seems that dolphins, like humans, have their own psychopaths.
