Hork-Bajir Appearances
« on: December 21, 2009, 11:44:32 AM »
What do Hork-Bajir look like?

More specifically, what color are they, and which cover is right?
The green one on HBC, or the tan one on Book #34?

Both make sense based on how/where they live - green matches foliage and tan matches most tree bark.

So, when you were reading the series, how did you visualize them?

What does it mean to be free?

Dark forest green, I guess.  Of course, I don't use the illustrations -- I picture them as that drawing I saw a while ago on the demo of the Animorphs game.

That's an awesome drawing
I prefer the picture on HBC in general, but I've seen others from fan art with modifications that work well
As for color, well, I think they're described as green, but who's to say that the couldn't have morphological color differences like birds and cats
and people
Something, something, oh crap I pissed everyone off again....

I generally used the art from the Chronicles books to visualize everything. Which is why I still don't really know what Taxxons are supposed to look like :(

I think Hork-Bajir were described as green, but they had CRAZY colored bodily fluids:

"Blood--or something--oozed in shades of deep red and deeper blue-green." 48
"He was breathing hard and sweating the same blue-green fluid I'd seen inside his head." 49

Now I'm of the opinion that blood color has more bearing on skin color than anything else (which isn't really accurate, at least for non-mammals, and who knows how to classify a Hork-Bajir?) but based on the above information, they're like...dark reddish/green? Hold on let me check how they're described in book 1, I think they're almost black...oh it doesn't say

man I can't remember what color Hork-Bajir are in the books, lol man

I picture them being green, though the color may differ from one to the other like Human skin colors. I always imagined their forearm blades curving forward over their hands, but I have seen a picture where they curve back towards the elbow. I think the tail length differs too, but I don't imagine them being very long. I don't remember any Hork using its tail blade to attack, and they might actually be designed to hook into a tree limb for better stability.

yeah as far as the wrist blades go, I picture them curving downward from the front of the wrist, because that's how they climb trees, right? So they'd need them to face that way to hook into the bark.

I think I pictured knee blades on the front, pointed down (same reason) and elbow blades always seemed kind of pointless to me, but they're just pointed down toward the hand too.

Ankle blades seem useless too but I guess they're the only ones with a real-world counterpart in velociraptors and birds of prey in general.
I go off topic on purpose.

I think the elbow/ankle blades are more for harvesting bark than climbing purposes. Whether it makes sense or not, apparently it made sense to the Arn.

I always pictured the HB as green, like the color of HBC, but I think that perhaps they had slight pigment differences as the race evolved (even though it was a created race it would begin the evolutionary process from the moment of its creation). Some valley's might tend towards green skin, others towards tan or brown. I don't think the variation is anything as dramatic as dog fur or even human skin tone, but it likely exists, even if it is just between lighter and darker green/browns.

I like the HBC pictures, and the one on #34 is ok too. But, when you think about it, how would they have slashed that well with thier arm blades during battles when the blades were curved/slanted backwards towards the elbows? the most convenient slashing motion for blades that attached to the arm would be an outward swing from the forearm. with the blades curved back towards the elbows, i imagine the blades would have stabbed rather the sliced.

So, theoretically, it seems better if the blades on thier arms, at leasts the one that is closest to the wrist, was curved forward, curving/slanting over the wrist/backhand.
