Mall shops mentioned in the series?
« on: August 11, 2009, 12:31:29 PM »
What were some of the mall shops mentioned in the series?  I can remember The Gap, Limited, Cinnabon, and I think LL Bean but what were some others?

That covers all the ones I could think of off the top of my head. If you can find out some really common California shops besides those, it might have those in it.

Rachel had a tendency to list a string of clothing stores that sold unrelated styles. And based on how she looked on her covers, I'm of the opinion that she wasn't quite as fashionable as she liked to think.
I go off topic on purpose.

I think J. Crew, Express, and Bath & Body Works were mentioned as well.

It did seem like the stores mentioned were kind of random.  J. Crew doesn't seem like a teenage-oriented brand, for one...

OTHER People said Rachel was fashionable. Don't blame the character for what the artists drew. If we go by the covers, they can all morph clothing through the whole series.

They mentioned they Body Shop too. When Jake and Marco take Ax to the mall he knocks a lady over that has walked out of the shop.

I mean the sort of person who doesn’t feel too upset about the prospect of a weekend spent seeing no one, and reading good books on the couch. It wasn’t like I was a people hater or anything. I enjoyed activities and the company of friends. But they were a side dish. I always thought I would also be happy without them."

Abercrombie and Nordstrom were also mentioned.

I'm into fashion and I LOVE J.Crew, so it depends on what you like, your price range, etc.

Bebe and Express are the big ones that Rachel likes. I don't know how they were in the 90's, but they're really not all that great. It's like "sexy work clothes."

I feel like KA was never into fashion and it was hard for her to create a character that was, so she just mentioned stores that she thought a teenager would like.

It all depends on whether or not Rachel is into shopping or fashion. There's a BIG difference. Most teenage girls like shopping, but fashion involves following high street (runway shows, editorials, etc.) and low street (vintage, thrifting, street style) which most teenagers don't care about.

I love vintage clothes. I don't own any but I like seeing people dressed like that.

I always thought they made her look unfashionable on the covers too.

The dress on the cover of #42 still makes me cringe.
(and I just realized I don't own any Rachel books, wtf)

Yeah, Rachel seemed more like the first type.  MM#4 mentioned how it was all in the thrill of the hunt for her xD

Well what I mean by "shopping" is the typical high school Abercrombie/Hollister look complete with knockoff UGGs and a Dooney and Bourke bag. Most teenage girls claim to like fashion, but then they say their favorite designers are Coach and Chanel.  ::)

She really could go either way, her love of clothing wasn't developed enough and it really only matters to the fashion world. Rachel's smart and mature for her age and since her mother's a lawyer she has the resources for either one, but I don't want to put too much of myself into a character.

Oh, and just to put this out there, shopping itself does give somewhat of a thrill. It's not about spending money, it's about finding the sweater with the nicest material in the perfect shade of blue with the buttons that are just right that also happens to go with half of your closet.
