But then, Visser Three wasn't always in Andalite form. He might not have known his host's capability for holding his absorption. Just like with holding your breath, it might be something that you only get better at with practice and can't do for long periods of time. The Visser was already in the Pool in that oatmeal bit anyways, and was probably holding his absorption as much as possible already. Can't imagine that Yeerk Pool water would taste better than swimming pool water. :P But like with breathing, perhaps his hoofs were doing the equivalent of gasping for breath already.

IDK, I'm just not willing to quickly jump to the whole KASU/plot device assumption. It's there, probably on accident, but that doesn't mean that we can't work to make it make sense. :D

I am

but an english degree and recent rereads have made me cynical.

I like the breathing thing. I also agree that they'd need to eat basically constantly to maintain their metabolism. Andalites are an active species, and are able to digest and convert the energy in our food into energy for their bodies, so they must use a similar mechanism and get a similar amount of energy from the food they eat. That logic doesn't feel rock-solid, but anyway, I know they talked about "morning grass" and "I went out to feed that evening" or whatever but the only way for their whole energy-absorption system to make sense, at least to me, is if they're eating all. the. time. I mean, they come from a planet that's basically one huge meadow. They're grazers, not hunters, so they have no need to adapt to stalls in metabolism or any periods of starvation at all. Unless there are Andalite droughts or seasons or something, I mean, the Ellimist did mention harvesting leaves in his prehistoric escapades...

okay I'm going off the deep end and I better stop before I drown completely
I go off topic on purpose.

Now the thing is, they only really absorb when they're moving. Each step they take, they crush up a bit of the ground below them, absorb some of the crushed-up grass or soil or whatever, and digest that. So, they're not eating when they're sleeping and standing still. So, when they go out for a morning run in the dew-covered grass, that's when they get their "breakfast" meal. Going out for one last run before settling down for the night would be their evening meal. Etc. Perhaps the muscles that draw up the food are activated by the motion of stepping, and to avoid that they'd have to do the equivalent of tip-toeing, which would be really hard to do in a Yeerk Pool. :P
