I think it's the first thread I begin here on this board ^^'
Well, I wanted to make a thread for the not-English-speakers, to talk about the books in the other countries, the translations etc. because I'm always curious to know how many volumes were translated in each country, how they translated some words, etc. We already talked about that sometimes in other thread but never had a thread only for that.
So, in France, we had almost all the volumes translated, except:
#47 - The Resistance
#48 - The Return
#49 - The Diversion
#50 - The Ultimate
#51 - The Absolute
#52 - The Sacrifice
MM4 - Back to Before
The Ellimist Chronicles
AM2 - The Next Passage
and
#53 - The Answer became #47 - Mission Finale
#54 - The Beginning became #48 - L'Ultime Combat
the titles were changed, and they made a summary of the previous volumes. The new Animorphs totally disappeared from this version >_< Some other volumes had their title changed too (example: 25 - The Extreme became 25 - Le Voyage (= The Trip))
For the translations, they stayed quite close, I think, even if I'm sure I can find a lot of mistakes and differences if I read them again in both languages.
Though-speak became "parole mentale", telepathy became "télépathie"
Visser => Vysserk
Controller => Contrôleur (the French word for that ;))
Howler => Hurleur (same)
Chee => Chey
Leeran => Leiran
Yeerk => Yirk
but I think all the other species stayed the same, only adding an accent on the E sometimes (Pemalite => Pémalite).
Rachel's sisters Jordan and Sara became Kate and Sarah, probably because "Jordan" sounds masculine to us.
Dak Hamee => Dak Haimie
Jara Hamee => Jéré Haimie
Seerow => Sierow
Ellimist => Ellimiste
The covers are also different sometimes. The French #5 show Marco turning into a lobster, as on the British #5.
I also own the Japanese volumes, the 5 first and only volumes translated ^^' But they're great. The covers aren't really cool (drawings, but not the best...), but there are awesome drawings inside the volumes, and they're really cool.
I haven't read them, so I don't know how they translated the Alien words...
For the Everworld and the Remnants, now... We had a full translation of Everworld, who were edited twice, even (once in 12 volumes, the 2nd time in 3 big volumes with 4 parts each; the 1st edition can't be found anymore, but I'm pretty sure it existed). For the Remnants, we had only the 7 first volumes >_<
As the Animorphs series were translated in 25 languages, Spanish, German, Italian, Swedish, Indonesian, etc., I'd like to know more about the translations, so please, "foreigners", come and share ^^

In norway we had all of the books translated exsept the Altenamorphs books :( And the cover on the Norwegian books was the same as on the originals books
The translation was very close to the English
Some of them:
Controller => Kontrolør
Howler => Hyler
Chee => Khien
Yeerk => Jerk

Nice! You were really lucky! Most of the languages didn't have all the volumes (AM1 & AM2 aren't really in the series :P).
I'm always wondering how you pronounce your letters in Norwegian... Can you make an audio with you pronouncing the words you wrote? Because when I see them, they don't seem so close to the English words, to me ^^'
Oh, another question that every foreigner can answer too: Are the books rares in the shops or even on Internet now? Because it's harder and harder to find them all in English and in French, even as 2nd hand...

Goom asked me what the content of the summary was.
Maybe someday we could translate it and post it to have some RAFians cry for/with us.
Cutting off all the books which were essential for the plot and making a quick pathetic summary of them in the couple last books was cruel for French fans (add the KA final letter, and all the events of the last books and you get what we call the "cherry on the cake").

For the translations, they stayed quite close, I think, even if I'm sure I can find a lot of mistakes and differences if I read them again in both languages.
If you have so time Dameg, it'd be cool if you could read "Elfangor's secret/Le secret d'Elfangor" (in which they are all sent back to the past) again.
I am pretty sure that in MY book there is a sentence in which the Time Matrix is described and it goes like this : "de Le globe spatio-temporel" as in "Il était en possession de le globe spatio-temporel". I don't remember the exact sentence but they wrote "le" every time in front of "globe" and I was horrified.
I found the book pretty crappy, but *that* definitely put me off.
Did they use an internet translation or what???
Ah, and also, if you read the last couple of books, you will notice that the names of the spaceships and other technical terms are different from the previous books. For example they changed "le vaisseau amiral" to "le vaisseau lame".
Probably the translators were new. I don't know.
It feels crappy and adds to my fan's overall disgust.

I don't remember for Elfangor's secret in French, but I'll re-read it later and see...
Anyway, I remember there were mistakes sometimes, like "chouettes" when they only had the "mouettes" morphs, and other stuff I corrected with a pencil ^^'
For the summary... why not ^^ When we have time, we'll do that.

I'm Norwegian too, so let me correct them a little.
I see you spelled these ones a little wrong:
Controller--> Kontrollør (Forgot two L's)
Chee--> Khi (If you said The Chee, then you would be right about Khien)
And you forgot these two:
Andalite--> Andalitt
Animorph--> Dyremorfer
Hork-Bajir and Taxxon are exactly the same. All the character names are spelled exactly the same, and most alien species are spelled the same(C are usually replaced by K, like in Helmakron, for example).
I do like that Yeerk is Jerk, though. When my brother started reading Animorphs(he was the one who got me into them), he told me about the plot and really recommended it for me. When he got to the part about Yeerks(= Jerker), I was like "do you realize what Jerk means in English?". xD
One of my Finnish cousins have also read Animorphs. There they've just got the volumes 1-20 + Megamorphs 1. :(
She read all those, and envied me and my brother for getting to read the entire thing in Norwegian...

Call me ignorant, but as much as I'm enjoying this thread I don't understand why words like Andalite and Hork-Bajir were changed/translated into something else. They're made up words, so why should it matter?

Yeah, in France it was because of pronunciation. French kids don't know how to pronounce English, like "Chee", they'll pronounce it more like "Shay" (and it's how we pronounced "Chey" lol). "Visser" is the French word who means "to screw (on)", and "visser" pronounced like in English looks like the French word "viscère" who means "internal organ"/"viscera" ^^' The translators couldn't keep this word, definitively ;D
PS: If, some day, you hear about a re-edition of Animorphs in your country, tell us.

The books are hard to find here in Norway in the shops and on Internet, if you are lucky the shops have some few. I hope it will be a re-realise in Norway and other countries too :)

Does anyone have any info on the Spanish versions? I'm thinking of ordering some as a Spanish lesson, but I don't want to use them if they are badly translated. (I mean if the grammar/diction is badly done, not if the story isn't correct.)

In Italy we had translated the normal series until book 52, and the first Alternamoprhs. So, I have never read #53 The Answer and #54 The Beginning, and all the Megamorphs and Chronicles :-[ :-[
I know the contents of those books by some summaries found on Internet.
The publishing house has a funny motivation : "they add nothing to the final". So, the series ends with the explosion of the yeerk pool :akanbe:
Tte titles are generally translated literally, with some exceptions : #24 "L'astronave" (The Spaceship) #27 "L'abisso" (The Abyss) #39 "La scatola" (The Box, cause the literally translation of "The Hidden" doesn't make sense in Italian) and some others.
The terms and names are almost all the same.
Andalites and Pemalites are "italianized" to Andaliti and Pemaliti, and sounds good in our language.
Howlers -----> Ululanti (same meaning).
Blade ship ---> Ascia (meaning "axe").

In Indonesia the books were translated until 27 or maybe 28 (can't remember) they didn't change any name or any term though, Jake is still jake, andalite is still andalite, yeerk is yeerk, dracon is dracon... you get the idea.

In Germany the books were translated till 30 and the first three Megamorphs but none of the Chronicles.
The book titles were really good translated and the Names were also the same.
Thought-speak -> Gedankensprache, which is the literally translation for it.
Visser -> Visser
Controller -> Controller
Howler -> Heuler, a good translation
Chee ->Djee (and I think in the later books Chee, but I'm not sure of that)
Leeran -> Leeraner
Yeerk -> Yirk
Pemalits - Pemaliten
Rachel's Sister Jordan -> Kate
And I think the other things stayed the same.
They mostly just changed the endings so the words sound german or they translated the words.
What I really hated was, that they didn't translate all books...
