Title: Where do the animorphs live?
Post by: wolfev on June 25, 2008, 11:13:47 AM
I'm not sure if its ever explicitly said, but I know its implied that the Animorphs live on the west coast. Is there any proof against this. Here's what I have to prove they are.
Book 1:There is a beach near there city.
Book 4:Tobias claims a ship was heading to Singapore, this is an easier trip from the west coast so east coast ships probably don't go there.
Book 14: They are near a desert which has area 51's equivalent near it.
Also, though the range of Red Tailed Hawk is nationwide the range of the Golden eagle is west coast.
The only question is what state, I think California, and what city.
I really hope this isn't like trying to find Springfield.

The Animorphs do live in California. It's said in the last book. I think near Santa Barbara or something, but I'm not sure.

they live in a large town/mini city in south cali..

but once you think about it, it's was kinda stupid for the yeerks to only have one pool... have to wonder if there where more...

I don't think it was that big of an operation at first. They did grow, but for whatever reason, they just had one pool complex.

And yeah, the Animorphs live in California. That much is confirmed.

I can't remember where I got this from, but I think it was mentioned (by either K.A or in the books) that the one in their town wasn't the only Yeerk Pool, but it was the largest and the most developed one that they had so far.

Remember, the Yeerks weren't invading on Earth for very long when the Animorphs began. Maybe about 5-6 years? Edriss (Visser One) and Essam were on Earth for several years making a life for themselves (and building up The Sharing), however, the secret invasion didn't start to fully take off until Edriss presented the Humans to the Yeerks and was promoted to Visser One (with Marco's mom).

Even then, it would've taken some time to assemble and grab the right hosts in power to pull off a project as big as the underground Yeerk Pool, especially in secret. The amount of planning involved in scouting a good place, and then finding the proper funding to bring in construction equipment needed to build something that huge (not to mention the amount of labor time the Yeerks used to actually to build it), would've taken a good 5-6 years for the Yeerks to progress to where the Animorphs saw them for the first time.

Atleast, that's what I've always assumed. It has been a long time since I've re-read Visser or any of the books.

I don't know about it being in southern California. I was always more inclined to believe it was in the northern part of the state. The climate matches more and that's where the big forests and mountains are. The south is more dried out. Also, some of the animal species mentioned are more likely to be in the northern part of the state.

Is it ever actually stated to be north or south?

Personally I always pictured it where Sunnydale is in Buffy. Which is to say it's near (or is the Ani-verse' version of) Santa Barbra.

*Season 7 Spoilers*

YES! Even though Buffy ended after Animorphs, the Hellmouth under Sunnydale in Season 7 always reminded me of the Yeerk Pool. I can't help but relate the massive cave in of the Yeerk Pool in Animorphs to the Buffy season finale, when the Hellmouth collapses under Sunnydale.

at least none of them were jerks like those kids on the MTV California shows. Of course, I sometimes thought Rachel was kinda getting like the stereotypical Valley girl sometimes and that bothered me. Sometimes I really just wanted to hit her. Of course, that is what makes the character so deep.

Anyone ever tried drawing an area map of where they live?

I always imagined the coast to left and Jake, Rachel and Marco living like 30 min walk east from the beach and then the abandoned construction site and the mall divided by this busy arse highway. Cassie living not far to the north, on the outer skirts of dense fores and further north into it is Ax's scoop and the mountains where scenarios of The Encounter, The Proposal and The Resistance would have been in.
To the south would be the Downtown. The Gardens somewhere in between.

I'm gonna try putting my view on paper.

I always thought the mall and construction site were between their houses and the coast...  Other than that it's pretty much the way I pictured it.

Hi! Just found this forum recently and have finished most of the books now.  :)
I've wondered about where the Animorphs live for a while now.
I checked what you all wrote here and remembered that in book 51 they said the Capitol was over 200 miles away. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too much over 200 miles.
I googled a little, as I don't know much about California (I'm from Germany).  From the distance it could be either Eureka (about 209 miles from Sacramento) or San Luis Obispo (about 230 miles from Sacramento), considering that the city is near the coast.
I tried to google deserts as well. The Mojave Desert seems to be not too far from San Luis Obispo.
So, San Luis Obispo is my best guess.
What do you think? Could that be right?

The badge actually says "Orson," the name of David B. Mattingly's cat. He snuck Orson's name and pictures into a few of the illustrations, like the ones for books 5 and 13.

Interesting work there, charming_angel.
Though I got no idea what the Sunnydale Valley girl thing means...
It definitely needs to be a place by the west coast of the USA with lots of woods/forest.

I tried to jot down a rough map of what I imagined the Animorphs' town to be.
Here's what's in my mind:

I pretty sure KA said one time she didn't base it on any specific city or town, but it did share many qualities with the West Coast.

Sort of like having a forest, a zoo, the ocean, mountains, desert, and a decent population all in a relatively small area is very convienent for people who can aquire and spend two hours as animals.

Awesome map.  But shouldn't the Yeerk Pool extend under the mall, as well?  And probably the down-town area, too; since they mention entrances in car-washes and such.

For that matter, most of the time, malls are in (or at least close to) down-town areas, aren't they?  Why do you have "Downtown" so far away from everything else?

I still really like the map.  I'm just pointing out things.

Also, I'd say that Erek's house is probably a bit further from the Yeerk pool. Otherwise, the pool complex and the Chee park would probably have intersected at some point...

Actually, that'd be an interesting fic... The Yeerk pool expansion getting too close to the Chee Park... Hm... Maybe I'll include something about it in my Pemalite Chronicles...

That would be interesting. Assuming the chee park is surrounded by pamelite metal or something, the Yeerks could hit the wall. Then the Animorphs would need to do something before they punched through.

I'm not saying that I disagree with everyone but there is another possibility. The East coast.
Rachel have acquired an "endemic species" (which means a species that only exist in one place on the planet) in this case. Two American states in the east coast. And it's not harder to sail to Singapore from the east coast. You just use the Panama Canal.

Yeah but in the David Trilogy one of the world leaders was a yeerk. So the yeerks were infiltrating other areas. I didn't think she would say Bill Clinton was one although if it had been during Bush it would have made sense  :P

Before it was mentioned in the books that it was California i put two and two together you know the whole Mountains and big forests and a desert close to the ocean. I live in California i have seen all those places. I live in the central Valley  so I'm in the middle.  I always wished it was my town. I don't live close to the ocean but the Smith canal is the deepest in the world and it leads to the Ocean we have a marina and sometimes lost dolphins end up there. two hours to the west you reach the ocean two hours north you reach forest two hours east you reach mountains. the only thing is there are no Sky scrapers and i think they have some in the books EGS tower for example

I still really like the map.  I'm just pointing out things.

Malls can be anywhere where with a large population agglomeration. This is just ONE mall. I am certain there are others where you think there should.
I always pictured the Yeerk pool to be underneath half of their town, yes, but not directly underneath the Mall, the Construction site and the Anis' homes and all. After #52, post-implosion of the ground, I don't remember anything said about the state the Mall is in. So I just assumed, it was never in the crater.
I am actually unsure how far away Downtown was from the Anis town.

This is a good point. The Chee would have wanted their Sanctuary to be as far away from the Yeerk Concentration as possible.
But you guys gotta keep in mind the scale. The non-existing one that is MEANT TO BE there, I mean! ;D
What looks like is close on this quick map, could be a 10 km thing.
For instance, I think I made the Yeerk Pool complex too small there...

and the thing with them being in cali is that it mentions there are wolves in the wild. this is false. california's wolves were exterminated way back in the 20s or so. also, golden eagles are found even out in england (different subspecies, but still) so meh, i dk

Okay, so i'm a nerd and have spent about 15 hours piecing together where they are...

There's conflicting bits we are looking for:

City Transit - Buses, Subway System.
Mountains - National Forest
Sea Cliffs
Beach w/ boardwalk

Gotta be somewhere in a 40mi radius of the edges of the Bay Area. I'd put my money on either SunnyVale/Palo Alto or the Vallejo/Novato/Sonoma Area.

I don't know if this is too late or anything, but I just started reading #7 and Rachel explicitly states Ax's Dome crashed in the Pacific Ocean.

I don't know if this is valid at all, and I haven't thought it out much, but is it possible that they live in Hawaii?

No, because when they fly back from the arctic, they do it with raptor morphs.  Raptor morphs that wouldn't make the haul across the Pacific without rest.

What really gives away where the animorphs live is the Gardens.  The Gardens is a zoo/theme park.  Only park that fits that description is Six Flags Marine world in Vallejo.  That's not too far from the ocean, therefore I believe that the animorphs town is in a suburban city/town somewhere in bay area.  that would place them a 2 hour drive from the state capitol, sacramento.  i live in sacramento, so when they went to the capitol and book 51 i was omg, animorphs came to my town!

Yeah, Wikipedia says that the Animorphs live in Santa Barbara. That kind of annoyed me because here in cold, wet, and rainy Coos Bay, Oregon, it seems like every single kid at my school moved here from California. Even one of my friends!

Oh, and to whoever (I don't remember) brought up the Oregom Police thing: You people need to read the Anibase  :logo: more. It says under 'Who Knew' on #39 that it's Orson Police in honor of David B. Mattingly's beloved cat. You can find this kind of thing in other books, too.
