Title: best narrator in regular series
Post by: rocklobster on June 17, 2009, 12:08:12 PM
I like Ax and Jake's narration styles best.  Jake comes across almost like the Spider-man of the team and Ax is just plain hilarious at times.

Don't really know . . . I guess I like them all equally . . .

Hmm. Probably Marco and Ax more than anyone else. Tobias sometimes came off as whiney, even though I'm not a big wangst shouter in his regard. Cassie could be a bit preachy, and I didn't agree with some of the things she said and did. That puts Jake and Rachel in the middle.

I loved reading Ax's books.

I liked Jake's, I think. Cassie's was my least favorite.

I liked Marco's books the best.  There was a good balance between the lighter, joking around parts and the heavy parts.

Least favorite would be Tobias, I guess.  Especially #23.  Eesh.

ax's books were definitely my favorite. I love the whole aliens-viewing-humanity thing

I think rachel and tobias were both the most...out of character when they narrated. Tobias never whined nearly as much in anyone else's books, and Rachel was always so tame and apathetic in hers.

Ax and Marco were both quite good. I agree with AniJen that the whole alien-viewing-humanity dynamic was compelling and, at times, insightful and hilarious. I also like Marco's balance between comedy and ruthlessness. He's such a smart character, but it's a scary sort of smart. I think I relate to Marco a lot more these days than the other characters.

My favorites were probably Ax, Marco, and Tobias.

To be short and sweet, Marco because of his wit, and his joining of humor and ruthlessness, Ax because of the insight of an alien looking at society, and, to be unoriginal and cliched, Tobias because of loner not fitting in situation.

Exactly. Whenever we went into Rachel's narrations, she was so thoughtful and clear-headed. Not some 2 dimensional crazy war chic. Rachel's final narration before she died was actually really beautiful. Angelic, I once labeled it. There wasnt just a warrior we saw, but a focused warrior, not some raging nutcase lol.

Rachel's voice got lost in the middle of the series, esp in books The Weakness (pure Blond Rachel) and a bit in The Return, until the end of course. And then when we saw her through everyone elses narrations, then was she the 2D nutcase.

I always liked Marco's the best. He was the most entertaining..I also liked how he sometimes branched off into situations that didn't involve the animorphs, like going on dates and stuff.

I'm torn between Marco and Ax. Both were my faves, but I chose Ax, simply because it brought in a fresh new perspective, in still a very funny way.

i like ax best. Even he said that he doesn't understand human humor at all, but he always made me laugh with his thoughts and comments bout human culture and habit.
But still,a tobias has always been my favorite

I'm torn between Marco and Ax when it comes to narrating the books. Both of them had a great sense of humor, and a great sense of purpose.

My least favorite was definitely Tobias. He is way over-the-top whiney  :-\ Cassie was my favorite character (closely followed by Ax/Marco) but half of her books were just kinda.. blah at times.

Ah. I didn't vote. I loved Tobias, Ax and Rachel's books. Jake's were a close 'second', followed by Tobias, then Cassie.

I liked that Rachel came across perfectly in her narrations. I highly doubt she would have been a looney toon in her own head. Her 'crazy' was a total front/excuse for getting done what needed to be done.

I love Ax narrated books especially book 8. The Diary was a brilliant addition. wonder why they didn't continue it ion teh other Ax books it would have been fun to read his entire Earth Diary

Definitely Ax. The first book he narrated was classic.

Next up would be Marco, because he's just hilarious.

After that, I'd say Tobias, because something about how he talks about how much his life sucks just makes me feel bad. Obviously. Wait, that sounds really stupid. Oh well.

I'm not surprised at all to see no votes for Cassie. She was such a whiner, it was so annoying. Her family life was so uneventful too.

Easily Marco, followed by Tobias, and Rachel (though mostly the earlier Rachel books). I enjoy Ax's now, but I didn't like them as much when I first read the books as a kid.

Cassie and Jake... You know, it's funny, I like them as character's, but I didn't like their narrations. Cassie had a couple of good books (namely 19 and 29), but Jake... eh... I dunno. For some reason, his narration bothered me, ESPECIALLY the books that actually centered around him. The books he narrated that had little to do with him, like 26, weren't so bad, though.

My favorite is Ax, followed by Rachel and Tobias pretty much together, then Marco VERY slightly behind them, then Jake, then Cassie. Though it's pretty much almost five equal with the first five, then Cassie trailing behind.

Ax. Quirkiness tops all in my book.
Not that Ax is naturally that way, but he's an alien stuffed in an alien planet so you get what I mean.

I would have to say Tobias was my favorite to read. Ax and Rachel were my next favorite. Marco did get some of the interesting stories though, like the discovery of the Chee.

I know a lotta people won't like me for this, but Marco is my least favourite narrator, although as a character probably my third fave. I prefer Tobias and Ax's narrations, although I like Jake's and Rachel's.
But! I realised that there a lotta books that are narrated by, say, Jake or Cassie, that don't centre on them. I like reading them, they're just missions. Unlike, say, #31 or #44. But with Tobias, there are none of those. EVERY SINGLE BOOK he narrates mostly centres on him. #3, #13, #23, #33... they all more or less centre on him.
Ax is cool though. "Yes Prince Jake. Toy! Toytoytoytoytoytoyt oy... sorry, Prince Jake."

It would be pretty interesting to go through the series and see the proportion of "normal dormal missions" to "intense character focus and/or it's all up to you" books for each character. Because you say Cassie didn't have a lot, and she certainly had some "normal dormal missions," but she also had the most tangential, independent plots of anyone and spent a lot of time whining how terrible the war is and how much she hated fighting.

And as far as Tobias, I agree, and I think that could have easily been remedied if the publishers hadn't made the arbitrary decision to give Tobias and Ax only 1/10 books when everyone else got 1/5. I still don't get that decision. Just to make it easy to keep track of which narrator got which books? How is that hard to keep track of, though? Anyway, if Tobias had gotten 1/6 books like everyone else, I'm sure we would have probably gotten the same amount of whining but a lot more normal dormal missions, too.

I liked Marco's narrations best because he was a gift of a character and I felt like he got many of the wham books. Even when they weren't focused on the Visser One plot, they were still major (#10, #20). The only "filler" books that he got were #25 and #40, but I feel like those weren't as blatantly filler as #36 or #44 and I enjoyed reading them.

A lot of this comes down to personal preference, because if you really like Marco or think that Ax was hilarious, you're bound to enjoy their books the most.

I really liked Rachel's books early in the series and I've said why thousands of times. Cassie was my least favorite narrator because she's my least favorite character, but I enjoyed some of her better books like #29.

I also don't think that Tobias and Ax can be considered because they had half as many books. The only book I didn't like of Tobias' was #3, I can't decide which of his was his best because they all have his shining moments. Ax is also difficult to think about in this context because he goes back and forth between comic relief (#28) and being super-serious (#46). I think that's WHY people like Ax and while he's not as fun to read about for the younger crowd, once I read his books when I was older I LOVED them.

As for Jake, some of his books were EPIC (#26, #31) and some of them seemed kinda wasted. #36 is easily his worst and if it wasn't so early in the series, #11 would be up there too (it was too early in the series to really be considered filler). The scene in the Amazon where ants are devouring Rachel in grizzly morph is scary for that early in the series. I actually think that a lot of early Animorphs is pretty dark, but anyways...

It all comes down to who you like and who has the books with the best plots and characterizations. Rachel's characterization was inconsistent and Cassie got bad plots (#44 was obvious filler, #34 was badly-written, #39 could've been better, etc.), so that's why I think they don't get a lot of votes.

I think that's WHY people like Ax and while he's not as fun to read about for the younger crowd, once I read his books when I was older I LOVED them.
Another reason is that younger people wouldn't get a lot of the reference jokes. I hadn't read Animorphs in a good three years now, and I just came back to it, and now I get all the jokes I didn't get before. Also, I now know what The Nanny is, which was vital to understand for #26. lol
