Has anyone noticed Applegate's insane overuse of the word look?
As in: "Look, guys, I'm going to this..."
Not entirely annoying, just weird once I noticed it...
-
Lol, yea i noticed. It was overy used. Like, every single Animorph said the word 'look' before starting a sentence. Marco and Rachel were the worst.
But since we're on that subject, I found it odd how Marco was this guy who clearly didnt care for reading, especially long books, and yet there he was in his narrative referencing Tolkien and Lord of the Rings. And many times i might add.
And i know it was only because KA was a big Tolkien lover, but still, bad characterization for Marco. Contradicts his behavior. It would be easy to see he didnt want people to think he actualyl read books, but come on., all the animorphs referenced similar things...

Would I be able to ask which marco book has the reference? I'd like to go back and see that. I never noticed it, of course I was never a huge lotr fan so I probably would have just read it without thinking twice, only read the lotr series once.
-
dont remember. But there were several i believe. And in one he compared Rachel to a fenale Tolkien elf. Beautiful but deadly.
-
Yeah, in the Look thing, it was made in the point of view and of speaking of kids. Look, maybe everyday people just use "look" a lot. ;D
-
I haven't notice..but now i'm gonna..ahh
-
Once you notice something, it's pretty hard to stop noticing, lol.
-
Yeah, they do say a lot of things repetitively. "Look" was definitely one of them and I just thought of one I can no longer remember.
-
lol, i started recording my lines for tobias, and like my third line is "look", my fourth is "just look"
-
Rachel made a Lord of the Rings elf reference about Chapman's daughter in book two, and Marco failed to read one of the Lord of the Rings books for a book report in book five
hope that helps

I think things like this happen with pretty much any writer. No matter what you're writing, parts of your writing (or speaking) style show through your work. I sometimes notice similar things when I read through my own writing.

Just little things really, like repeated use of certain words, or the way I describe things. You know how you can go weeks without using a word and then one day you end up saying it loads?
-
yea, if you look through my writings, i say "he/she smiled" alot. i try to catch it and say different things, but i often dont

oh yeah :)

I say and write "dude" a lot.
And weird. Say and write that a lot too.
She must say look a lot or something.
-
You know, I never noticed before. But now that you've mentioned it I will notice EVERY SINGLE TIME! Gah!

uh ha :(

how about the most overused one of all? "The"...
lol. every book.
-
yeah, but that's kind of intentional. they were planning to make every title start with "the", not to mention it's one of the most commonly used words, like "a".
-
Stuff also tends to lance in animorphs.

i never noticed that, but ur rite, for a guy who didnt like to read, he sure did know bout all the long books.
and in reference to this thread, now that u mention it, they did say look alot. i never noticed it till u pointed it out. but interesting
-
I say and write "well" a ton!
-
I also noticed an unnervingly large amount of smirking in the series. Everyone's a sarcastic jerk, it seems xD
-
Smirk doesn't necessarily mean you're a sarcastic jerk, it's just an expression. Like smiling doesn't mean you're a happy go lucky clown.
And the Marco/LOTR thing makes perfect sense to me, because I have a friend who read LOTR's several times starting in grade school, but barely ever reads anything else, and only read anything while he was in school under protest.
-
Yes, but most of the people in the series who were smirking were making a smug comment, or were Yeerks x3 The Yeerks did a lot of the smirkage, if I recall. Not necessarily sarcastic jerks...but more likely to be. ^^
Speaking of LotR and Yeerks, isn't the word Yeerk itself the word for 'orcs' in Elvish? 'Yrch'...heheh, nerdy.

Whaaat??!! It was the '90s! ::) :D ;)
-
What'd we all smirk more in the '90s? ;D
-
It was the Seinfeld era...not that there's anything wrong with that! ;D

yeah, i noticed. i was just kidding.
-
yeah, I think Yeerk is from a reference to LotR also.

Same here.
As for the whole topic, I never noticed that. But, look, I'm a look kid too.
-
sometimes you can't avoid overusing a word. that happens to me all the time when writing.
-
yeah, but it does give it flavor.
