Title: Recording help
Post by: morfowt on June 06, 2008, 03:49:58 AM
Ok, so not much use right now, but here you can ask questions about a problem during recording, and hopefully someone will answer (doesn't necessarily mean I'm gonna answer).

I think this might come in handy, just not yet.

Here's my attempt at Tobias. I changed the pitch to -7 in the first one and -8 in the second one, so Tobias 2 is a tad deeper.

Let me know if either of them sound close to what we need.

Tobias 1: http://www.mediafire.com/?gt1ecj9zbgi (http://www.mediafire.com/?gt1ecj9zbgi)

Tobias 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?nmcoomxzy1t (http://www.mediafire.com/?nmcoomxzy1t)

O_o you can actually change the pitch on your computer?!?

you can with audacity. I've tried it before, but they said it still sounded the same.

Yeah. Once you record it go to "Effect" > "Pitch"

So....do I sound like a 13 year old boy in mine? lol

The pitch on the second does sound like a guy, but the way you speak is still very feminine.
Kinda sounds like a tranny

Hmm...I'm not sure that Tobias the Tranny will go over very well.

 :-\

I guess that means we're back to square one.

Thank god you said this. I thought that was JRT speaking there for a sec, and I was extremely surprised at how 'girlish' (is that a word?) he sounded.

huh? how could it be me if Terenia was the one who posted the link...

Just heard the second one...to be honest, that sounded like an old grandma speaking...

Yeah, that was my mistake. I thought you were the one to post those clips (your banner was right above it, so that's why)

I'm back and sorry. Morfowt has done a ton of the work that I should have. Thanks. I will be recording some more narration tomorrow because my dad is using the nice mic today. Just wanted to add that whoever ends up cast as Tobias should probably redo the beginning chapters, too.

alright, so annoyingly enough, the program that i have to record only allows me one minute of recording per file, so is there anything i can get for free that is better than that?

Try Audacity... that's what I use.

Yeah, I would go with Audacity. It works really well.

I'll second the Audacity suggestion.  It's awesome.

One thing to work on -- try to use similar microphones and/or eliminate noise; it's a bit distracting in the currently available audiobooks when the background noise/environment changes every time the character changes.  It also might help Skyping together when recording lines (it might make some of the dialog more natural, as you'll be able to hear the other characters).

Just some suggestions.

Hm, my computer has a built in mic, and doesn't have anywhere to plug in an external one. So I'm not sure how I'd go about doing that. But, so long as no one is home and the windows are closed, there isn't much, if any, background noise in my bedroom. Even less in my basement, although there might be a slight echo from there.

In any case, I'll try to do a couple of line tests for Jordan and Aldrea, and see how they sound.

We tried using teamspeak at first. Not good enough quality, and too hard to coordinate. Just ask any of the podcasters.
Personally, I would just have everyone get the best mic they personally can. I don't want to drop down to my crappy mic, and most people don't want to spend more than $75 for a mic.

It's true. There are incredible delays, and it can become very difficult.

Lol, yeah. Why do you think there's only one episode and it took so long to get out.

can someone explain to me how to use audacity i cant figure it out. i try to delete something and it wont delete.

When you want to delete something, you highlight it and then go to 'Edit - Delete'.

you cant edit while the audio is paused, only when its stopped, that used to get me

yeah me too. so you have to find where you want to delete. stop. and try to find that place again. If there's something wrong, I just restart the whole thing.

I was just thinking of future books, and I think we may have a problem with book 16. what are we gonna do for the chat room. How are we gonna "say" what was written in the chat room?

Oh... good point. I haven't thought about that.

maybe we can use that read text voice or w/e that program is you know what i mean, might work, or just have the narrator say it

Post by: ANna on June 30, 2008, 01:27:03 PM
Or have a ton of different voices? I guess the read text voice thing would work too.

You could always get a bunch of random people from this (or another forum) -- not involved in the audiobook project -- to do the voices.  Just an idea; I was just thinking that the people in the chat room are a bunch of random people from the Internet -- why not use a bunch of random people from the Internet to do the voices?

Also, if you do decide to use synthesized voices, check out the ones in Mac OS X.  They're quite nice, especially Alex (the newest one).  If you want a more computer-y voice, eSpeak <espeak.sf.net> has a bunch of good voices; however, I'm not sure how you would use it (I have an open-source screen reader that uses it, and there's a command-line version of it, but as far as I know, no one has written a shiny graphical interface for using eSpeak.  Well, there is one on the $100 laptop <www.laptop.org>, but I don't have it.)

Just some thoughts.

the narrator is jake...

if we're doing random people, well nobody's actually saying it. it just appears on the screen. a lot like our own RAF chat. besides, we don't need a bunch of random people. we can just get someone on this forum to do it.

It's like on TV when somebody gets a letter and we hear the voice of the writer; they're not really speaking, but it lets us know what has been written. We'd be working with the same principle, just more voices because there's more than one person talking.
I don't think it needs to sound synthetic, I think people just recording it is the best way to go.
