I had originally set out to head for Cassie's house- as my best friend, I was the closest to her out of the little group from last night and she might have some calming words. Other than the news article, there was no proof that last night had happened. But while Cassie would come up with the emotional help, Jake was the reliable one, and he probably had some wise things to say about it. I turned around slowly and froze as a thought hit me: if they had any clue about what happened last night, they might ask Jake, and if any of us had already gone to talk to him, they might figure it out. So I turned back the way I was going and hurried to Cassie's house.
It didn't take long to reach her place at the fast pace I was taking, so I knocked on the door right away to keep things going quickly, waiting for her or her parents to answer.
