"Someplace safe," Corliss said, patting Aurora on the shoulder. "Come on, love, it's gonna be alright. It takes a lot out of you, I know." Somehow...it seems as though it was the human Mike Leicester speaking, not the Yeerk called Corliss...but it's impossible to tell the difference...just a feeling...maybe a slight deepening of the accent...
Below them, a good chunk of The Sharing building lay in smoldering ruin from stray cannon fire. There wouldn't be any meetings there anytime soon...but knowing the Yeerks, they were all too likely to regroup and start again...
Almost worse than that were the police cars pulling in, sirens blaring...people in the surrounding commercial district, few as there were, had come out to see what all the noise was about. Mostly drunk college kids and disbelieving late nighters, but still...some of them had seen a spaceship, and people firing lasers outside The Sharing.
As they moved higher up above the town, the hatch melted closed--simply melted into the surrounding metal as if it had never been there. The little ship was pretty cramped with Myitt, Corliss, Aurora, Michael and Tia/Norpo on board, but ringed around the cabin walls were three spare tan colored metal seats with no visible seatbelts or anything like that. At the back wall of the cabin were two doors, or what looked like some kind of doors, both unmarked.
Corliss went into one of these doors and came out with a rolled up sort of futon, dirty and scraped up but functional. He set it on the floor of the cabin and helped Michael onto it after Michael had fallen asleep. "He's got the right idea," Corliss mumbled.
"Everyone alright?" the pilot, Myitt, said after a moment, still at the controls. "Yeah? Good, sit down or otherwise hang on to something. Let's make sure we stay alright..." The Bug fighter began to rocket away into the night sky.
