I am virtually positive Hork-Bajir can swim. We found this out in the book where Tobias regains his morphing ability.

*Does a bit of a re-read*

Book 13, The Change

<We're dead meat if that chopper gets here before we lose these
Controllers on the ground. There's a stream. Think these monsters swim?>

<They don't look like they do,> Rachel said.

<Hork-Bajir. Can you swim? If you can, signal me by quickly slicing down
the next sapling you come to.>

Slash! A sapling was suddenly shorter.

yes that makes sense. and also about andalites swimming, remember that in the book about oatmeal (17 i think?) when visser 3 is thrown into the yeerk pool they mention him treading water
" 'What do you care if he drains a few vegetables?' I asked. 'He's a vampire!' Chester snarled. 'Today vegetables....tomor row, the world!' " Bunnicula-a Rabbit Tale of Mystery

the problem is in book 4, ax says they don't swim...and honestly, i can't imagine them swimming because why would the arn create them to be able to swim if the valleys they live in shouldn't have bodies of water...

In book 4 Ax obviously meant they couldn't swim in the ocean. Even a 7 foot tall killing machine can tread water in a shallow stream!  ::)

if it was a shallow stream, they wouldn't need to tread. they could stand up straight, and their hand would be plenty above the water.

So much for a one answer question huh.
Andalites I picture like dogs and horses; they can swim, but there at the surface the whole time.
Same with Hork-Bajir and people; can they go in a lake and not drown; sure
Can you throw them in an ocean and expect them to catch a fish 30 feet below the surface? I wouldn't

I think Ax can swim. I think there was a time where the group was in the water, and Ax could stay afloat in his own form between morphs.

In which book was that?

I know it was mentioned in MM2 if in no other ones, since I was just thumbing through that book. ^^() Rachel mentioned Ax being able to swim quite well.
Although what bothered me there was that you would think, a la #17, he'd be injesting a lot of salt water as they're treading water. But I guess one takes facts presented in The Underground with a grain of salt, anyway, as I know that whole "They're constantly injesting whatever through their feet" thing has been rehashed until dead.

But yeah, I agree that Horks can prolly swim in the same regard as the average human can swim- not exactly charging through the water in pursuit of dolphins, but managing not to drown, sure.

It is very, very rare for earth animals to not be able to swim to some degree.  Even humans can swim instinctively.  There's no reason to believe the Andalite planet doesn't have lakes, rivers and oceans (actually, doesn't Ax say something about his homeworld being similar, but with less water?).

The Hork-Bajir planet is something of an unusual case.  Even if there are rivers (if there are oceans, they're below The Deep), Hork-Bajir don't spend much time on the ground.  What's the point of swimming if you can jump from one tree to another over a river?

So, Hork-Bajir are unknown.  Andalites can swim.

It is said that Andal (or whatever) is similar to Earth. Except that Earth has more water. And our air is a little different. Luckily Ax can breath Earth air better than Loren could breathe andalite air.

I doubt there are any oceans or any form of water below The Deep, because the bottom of The Deep, is the molten core of the planet...

Know what could be a possibility? Maybe those free Hork-Bajir, when previously controllers, had Yeerks who previously held human hosts. Sometime during their lives as controllers, maybe the knowledge of how to swim was shared.

Still though, that means they can swim, just not naturally.

Still, there needs to be some kind of water on the Hork-Bajir world. Granted the sources would be small and scarce, but life still needs water.

What does it mean to be free?

I think you're onto something there Think. I mean Humans can't naturally swim because we aren't designed to live in the water, it's something we've had to teach ourselves to do. There's no reason why the Hork-Bajir couldn't do the same, especially if the Yeerk in their head had prior knowledge of how to swim from a previous host (eg. a Human).

Actually we can swim naturally but we forget how to do when we learn to walk.
But I am satisfied with this answers anyway. Even if I start to think that I should have began a new tread instead. It wasnät that easy that I believed.

That gave me images of white lab coat scientists putting infants in pools of water and watching what happens.

Unfortunately that's how some swimming instructors feel that's the best way to teach a baby to swim. Just throw 'em in.
