Would You Have Joined the Sharing?
« on: May 02, 2011, 06:24:05 PM »
In a hypothetical world where the Yeerks, Andalites and Animorphs (as well as anything else in that appeared in the series)  actually existed, and Sharing was real, would you have joined?

Keep in mind that the members of the Sharing put up this "happy family" sort of vibe.

I personally don't think that I would have joined. I seem to hold a prejudice against social groups and youth groups and such. Nothing against them. I get the image of a cult whenever I think of places like the Sharing--again, NO OFFENSE TO THOSE OF YOU INVOLVED IN SUCH GROUPS. Now, I do realize that the Sharing tend to recruit lonely and friendless people. That seems to be their style. But I don't think that I would have joined up, given my thoughts towards social groups.

Of course, the Sharing doesn't exist. So I can't say that I absolutely wouldn't have thought the group to be interesting. Remember, Tobias went to a few meetings.

I would not have. I'm already involved a (very small) Boy Scout troop for one and I'm definitely not the most social person ever. Big groups make me uneasy and I'd probably just end sitting somewhere and reading or something during any of The Sharing's outings.

I can also honestly say this since every now and then a friend of mine tries to convince me to get me involved in a group he's in and I'm just like "no thanks..."

Nah I wouldn't have joined.I am not really big around groups and wouldn't really like the feel of being in The Sharing.

Yea. They seem to focus too much on the "kind heartedness".

Assuming I had lived in that reality in the late 90s, and had been born before 1990 (my real birth year)...
In other words, assuming I was between the ages of 13 and 20 and there was a Sharing building in my town.

Screw all this set-up! I would probably not join because I am very not interested in those types of groups.

I dunno.  It would have depended a lot on other factors.  If any of my friends were already members, then I would have been a lot more likely to join, I think.  Especially if, like Tom in the books, they constantly bugged other people they knew to join.  I may well have joined just to see what it was all about.  And, I'll admit it, I probably would have enjoyed the friendly atmosphere.  The camping trips, in particular, would have appealed to the geologist in me.

So, yeah.  If the Yeerks had come to earth before I'd read Animorphs, I would have been doomed.

Honestly? I dunno. I'm not a social butterfly, so that's a strike against joining. However, if there'd been a group in my town... Well, I *did* always want to join the boy-scouts when I was little... :P

The answer to this one is actually pretty complicated and yet simple. The truth is that I have always hated those happy-family, let's-all-get-around-in-a-campfire social groups. I spent my childhood as the weird kid nobody liked. XD I wouldn't have found them outright suspicious until after my sister went evangelical, but I couldn't stand being in those kind of "cooperative" situations. The only thing that would've prompted me to join is if a very close friend was involved. And even then they'd have to pester me. For a month. That is one seriously persistent Yeerk. XD

But if for some extremely illogical reason I knew there was something suspicious going on in the Sharing, I'd join in a heartbeat past the age of twelve. I'd be far too curious, and there would be far too many opportunities to "get ahead" in the world. I'd probably get too annoying and be infested, though. If I KNEW there was an invasion....I'd also join in a heartbeat. Maybe even faster. I always side with who I percieve as the winners.  :P

Well, as you can see, *pins on Eagle Scout Medal* (;D)I am and have been active in Boy Scouts for a while. We have a very large troop, and I love it there, probably, I wouldn't have joined the Sharing. I probably would have seen it as a co-ed scout program, and not felt like there was any real reason to switch. Of course, I'd only joined Scouting at 14, so... I might have joined before, but I doubt it. I could see it being a social outlet option considering I'm homeschooled, but I don't know, really. I didn't know anybody 'cept my brother when I joined Scouting, so having friends in the Sharing wouldn't have helped too much. Besides, I didn't have too many close friends at that age.

I don't think so. It's not that I'm against group things, because that's not the case. In High School, I was in Dance Club and Choir, which were both group things. They advertised helping the community and stuff, and I'm not into that. Sorry, but I honestly don't care about helping out the community. I know that sounds bad, but I don't. I'm also not much of a social person, which is the other thing The Sharing seemed to be - on the outside anyway, obviously.

So, in short - no, probably not, no.

I probably wouldn't have, since I'm not the type to join social groups. But, I might have supported them, since what they pretended to stand for was actually quite good.

Nope, I would have certainly not joined. The whole cult-like (spiritual, religious, ...) groups never got an ounce of attraction to me and I am generally group averse, like many people on RAF I believe.

Actually, the biggest pitfall in which I stepped when I was a teenager was self-imposed social isolation  :XD:

I would be too lazy to join the Sharing. I'm not really involved in a lot of stuff :P

I dont think anyone on this site would join considering were all sitting here staring at our computers like social rejects. Actually Im kidding. At least about the social reject part. Considering how many people say they wouldnt go thats the real reason for the aassumption. With my luck I'd get recruited while trying for college credit.

Tobias was a social reject, and he fell in the sharing for this reason  :P (in the megamorphs 4)
