Tobias issues
« on: January 18, 2011, 03:40:47 PM »
I was just rereading #9 and no, I'm not going off on a long rant like last time. I'm just wondering: Did this bother anyone else?

Quote
At the same instant, Tobias hit one of the guys from the Jeep. Tobias has more experience than I do. His aim is better. The guy he hit would be wearing an eye patch for the rest of his life.

<Yeee hah!> Tobias cried.

That he blinded somebody? That he EXCLAIMED IN JOY WHILE DOING IT?!?!?! What happens if by some miracle the Yeerks let that guy live? This is what I was talking about when I mentioned resentful Controllers or ones wanting healing by morphing. You can indeed live without an arm or finger or a toe or whatever, but an EYE? Jesus Christ, that was severe. This is why I hate Tobias so much and why I was very glad he had to suffer by living without Rachel.

Anyone have anything to add?

You think missing an eye is worse than missing an arm? Never mind that he probably said yee haa just because of the adrenaline rush. He's not psychotic or anything. He just does the only thing he can do, which is go for the enemy's face.

It still makes me mad. If he ever survives, people are always going to look down on him as a CRIPPLE while morphing technology is flaunted but NOT USED to help the people who REALLY need it and who have it OWED to them. Grrrrrr...

And if it weren't for Tobias, the guy would have both eyes, but would still be a slave to the Yeerks, as would the rest of humanity.

Besides, assuming he survived long enough to get the morphing technology, the guy's eye is probably taken care of all ready.

Tobias and Rachel were so MFEO  ::)

The only problem I have with Tobias is his reluctance to morph and acquire morphs.

And you can live without an eye. I think you should look at big picture limbs and organs. Like I said, while these people may be somewhat maimed, they would probably be grateful that someone was attempting to help them in the first place.

If they should be resentful towards anyone, it should be the Yeerk, or themselves, for being so stupid as to not see through the front that was the Sharing.

Yeah, but he got stuck in one of his first morphs. Yes, there's the possibility that was on purpose, but I can see why he'd be reluctant. Besides, he was trapped while the others were gaining experience with their morphing and getting a handle on different animals and reactions. Being reluctant to aquire morphs is an interesting and unique character trait.

Not to mention that one of his first new attempts to acquire DNA was getting the notorious dolphin morph. Getting his talons stuck in the dolphin's hide, and it not going into a trance wasn't fun for him.

Na man, I'm not buying it. In the first book he thought that the red-tail morph would be all he needed. Whether he planned on trapping himself is neither here or there, it's just unrealistic. Did he really think that a bird morph would take on the entire Yeerk Empire--ironically, it did on most occasions, but I digress.

I love Tobias, but I always hated how he was never big on acquiring morphs. You'd think that a kid who hated growing up in his own skin would WANT to morph more, instead of turning into a bird.

I see it more that once he found a body he was happy and free in, he'd never want to leave that, and would cling to it.

Maybe...But what about after he got his morphing powers back? He still fought in his hawk body. You'd think he'd morph the Hork-Bajir or something to help his team.

He did sometimes. But at that point it's like Ax fighting in his own body most of the time. The hawk is useful as an eye in the sky, so it wasn't pointless.

I guess you have a point. I just wish that Tobias morphed something bad ass at least a handful of times :P

Luckily for us, we get to see him morph Ax and a Taxxon--which were, in my opinion, the best covers for the books. I as a side note: I always loved the artwork for Tobias' books; the juxtoposition for the character is awesome--the hawk morphing, with Tobias superimposed in the background. GENIUS!

One thing I find funny about the cover of Ax morphing Tobias is that if you only had the cover to go on you wouldn't know who was morphing who.
