During one Animorphs novel, Ax offered to refer to Prince Jake as something like "the boy formerly known as "Prince"".  This was a reference to the great musician Prince changing his name to a symbol, becoming the "Artist formerly known as Prince".  He did it to secure control of his music.

This morning, Prince died at his estate.  He was found unresponsive in an elevator.

I believe it was, "The prince formerly known as Jake." Even so, I appreciate your sentiment.

Duh, the little rat-dog.  :)

And ahh, the awesome 90s, all the Prince & NIN & Offspring references and such.  *Bows to the awesome gods*

"The Prince Formerly Known As Jake" is still ****ing gold.

Person Of Interest re-watch.  Still stunning as ever.

I'm pretty sure it was "the Jake formerly known as Prince," because remember, it was Jake telling Ax not to call him 'prince' anymore.  Of course, I agree with all the "awesome reference" sentiments nonetheless.  :)

It actually took me a second or two to find the fake morph.  But, yeah, I'm pretty sure Jake never morphed a chihuahua.

Ooh.  :)  She has a lot of Animorphs swag.

I still have this lying around somewhere back at my parent's place, can't even remember where I got it, I think they were even selling them in bookstores back in the day.

Remember getting that in one of the books way back when, too.  :)  God, that Tumblr's such an awesome nostalgia trip.

Heh, yeah, I can't remember which book with the "new" NIN album reference is, but it's probably referring to The Downward Spiral just got the time a bit wrong.  The Fragile was 99.

Maybe it was referring to the Offspring. According to Wikipedia, their album Ixnay on the Hombre was released a few months before book 10, which was where they were mentioned. And most people would agree that was the last good Offspring album.

God, Offspring? Nice is Neat? I probably would have hung out with Jake and Marco for the music alone.

Yep, although the book reference is Marco & Jake sneaking into an outdoor Offspring concert (or festival in which they were playing) as dogs, it's not a specific album reference, but that'd be it.  1997.  Amazing, amazing album too.   8)

The NIN thing is Marco & Cassie discussing "the new" NIN CD.  Downward Spiral was '94, so too early, but The Fragile's probably too late at '99.  So it's just likely a broad general 90s setting for the series, doubt they paid much attention to the years.  But mid-90s, it'd be Downward Spiral.

The Fragile was 99.
The Reaction (the book with the NIN joke) was published 1997. So it would be The Downward Spiral

Well, yeah, but what makes more sense is that Katherine/Michael were just going for a general period/vibe, than thinking specific years.  Like the series taking place in 1994, that album's year, would throw off the Alanis and Offspring references etc, as they were sort of only just becoming "names".

It's just a general era thing.
