Respect the Grizzly
« on: March 13, 2009, 04:27:52 PM »
When I'm bored and feeling uber geeky I try, sometimes, to imagine what it would be like if I were suddenly faced with the Animorphs in morph. Hopefully during one of the more tame times, like when Rachel was mopping the floor in grizzly morph, and not during an all out battle. Still, part of this imagining process involves imagining the SIZE of all these animals packed into a small place (a la David's bedroom?).

Think about it: A tiger. A gorilla. A wolf. A grizzly. An Andalite. And a hawk, for good measure.

Now, picture that and look at these pictures of a grizzly bear recently killed in self-defense in Alaska. Warning, the images are a bit graphic.

This is the largest ever recorded grizzly bear. It stood 12'6" at the shoulder and 14' standing. Based on the contents of its stomach, it had killed two humans prior to being shot.
Think about this:
If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours!  To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

Gives me a WHOLE new respect for Rachel's Grizzly morph......

From what I can see from the bottom picture, the bullet entered the bear's face through the muzzle. There isn't as much bone there so a common .300 level round could get a kill.

But yes they do tank a lot vs 7.62 Soviet or 5.56 NATO rounds especially since the weak area is so small. Combat sharpshooting is hard.

well yes this bear was huge, but that is an exception to the rule. the avereage grizzly is about 7ft tall standing. this grizzly is equivelent to the 8 ft tall humans we come across now and then. yes it does happen, but not enought to become part of the average. so really while rachel's grizzly morph woulda been big and not something to be messed with, it would not have taken up as much space as this bear would have

I think Rachel's bear was stated to be eight feet tall.

Grizzly bears are enormous! Kodiacs are pretty big too, I think. I've read a few animal attack books and always shake my heads at how people walk into a bear attack.

Did you know a park ranger stopped a mom because she was lathering honey on her child's face to get a picture of it licking the honey off? Yeah, how about a picture of the bear chomping your kid's face off?

Bears are certainly anything but cute and cuddly. They're amazing creatures and people need to keep their distance. Winny the Pooh they are not.

So, yeah, Rachel's morph was certainly a force to be reckoned with.

kodiacks were actually found to be a subspecies of grizzly, so ya i know, not as exciting as when we thought they were there own species

and wtf?! that woman should have her child taken away and be locked up for attempted child endagerment!

She was probably trying to kill the kid anyway.
Until then we fight.

Munchous syndrome, or whatever it's called. No sane mother would want a bear anywhere near her child.

Subspecies of Grizzly? Does that bring down the Kodiak's cred, or bring up the Grizzly's? Kodiak's are like the second biggest bear, I think, besides Polars.

Maybe she didn't want to kill the kid, she may have just been stupid enough to think all bears are like Winnie the Pooh. You'd be surprised how little natural selection does these days.

On a side note, size isn't all that matters. In a fight between a decent grizzly and a polar bear, it would be a lot closer than "Polar bear definitely wins". The polar bear has more weight, but the grizzly has stronger front shoulders, significantly longer claws, and is naturally more aggressive and territorial.

What does it mean to be free?

kodiaks are the biggest bear sizw wise, don't know bout wieght

and i don't know bout grizzlies being more agressive. the polar hunts for its food, while the grizzly eats more roots and such then anything else

I mean the sort of person who doesn’t feel too upset about the prospect of a weekend spent seeing no one, and reading good books on the couch. It wasn’t like I was a people hater or anything. I enjoyed activities and the company of friends. But they were a side dish. I always thought I would also be happy without them."
