Compare and Contrast
« on: February 28, 2009, 04:17:36 PM »
Okay, grab book #1 The Invasion.  Got it?  Now in your other hand, should be book #54.

What differences do you see in the characters, in the writing style?   The relationships?  I'd like to talk about this with you guys today.

What difference really stands out the most to you between #1 and #54.

NOTE: This thread is intended to go off the strict topic, so long as it remains about the books.  And not your new hamster or some crap.

There are huge differences in the characters.  Imagine growing up as a teenager in a war.  There is almost too much stuff to list.

Yeah, the changes are immense. Every single character has made huge changes to their personality. You can see that the basics of their personality are there, but they have been warped into the "war-like" version. Jake's responsibility has become a type of leadership where he does what's necessary and is willing to make sacrifices. Rachel's recklessness has led to her accepting the dark side of herself and using it as a weapon. Ax has gone from cadet to warrior. Cassie has learned to make moral sacrifices and use her intuition for manipulation. Marco has gone from a smart kid with an eye for strategy to cold and calculating, knowing what has to be done and not fretting with the emotions of it. And Tobias....well, Tobias has learned that he can be loved, that there is a possible future for him...and then he has it all ripped away from him.

Huge changes. Life-altering (world-altering, really) changes.

His name is Squeeky McFluffers, and he's orange and white, and I gave him a toilet paper tube that he sleeps in and he yawns sometimes and it's so cute...

I wouldn't say compare books 1 and 54. Book one was a lost cause. For example; apparently Andalites can read minds. I'd say look either 3, 4, or 5 for an accurate comparison.

Also, not sure if anyone has done this, but read the books backwards. Start at 54 and go down to 1. It'll rock your world.

I've never tried reading them backwards. That would be quite confusing.

KASU's aside, I love book 1.

That would be interesting.

What about the differences in writing style?  Has "the war" changed KA?  I haven't re-read 54 in a while, so I don't know off the top of my head.

Book one was a lost cause.

 ::)  A "lost cause"?

As for the topic, it's all natural progression.  There are huge differences in the kids, but it's all believable, it's all natural, and it works.  Love it.
