(It's been a while since you posted, but Temrash gave her some very strong advice about being nice. Like sink or swim kind. Didn't know if you missed that, or if ardiss is just ignoring him.)

((totally missed it, thanks. Is Temrash still inside at the bar? I'm gonna pretend he is...))

Ardiss shrugs moodily into her refilled cup, "When people rip your life away from you, one's first inclination is not to be 'nice'. Excuse me if I've had a rough couple of days and am in a bad mood."

(Yeah, he's in the bar)

"I'm not ripping your life away from you. I'm trying to help you gain a new life. Are you really so bitter because everything isn't turning out exactly how you planned it?"

"Very nice Zosh. You got a lot better with the hand gun. How'd you like to try out a rifle, something with a little kick?"

Parker presents Zoshonel with his Battle rifle. Try this out?

(Do you think I'm being realistic with the description? I don't want to make out like Zoshonel is learning unrealistically quickly. We can say all this is happening within the timeframe of a few hours.)

Zoshonel took the gun, and planted his tail to the ground to give him a firm balance. He held the rifle firmly, took aim, and fired at a stationary target. But the kick made him miss. It took a few tries before he was used to it, and could start hitting the outside of the target.

(No, but you don't have to be a marksman to move on to different weapons.)

"Alright, Zosh, you want to hold the butt of your rifle to your shoulder." Parker pats the parts he's talking about as he explains, "Remember, squeeze the trigger, don't pull. If you pull, you're pulling your aim. This rifle fires in three-shot bursts so you can reset your aim after each firing."

Zoshonel found his aim got steadier after holding the gun to his shoulder, and he got into the practice of squeezing, and not pulling. When he got confortable with that, he started firing at the moving targets. Over time, he began hitting them consistently too.

"I was thinking when we get the skeet shooter working, we could give it the function of changing up the speed and direction that the targets fly. That way it would be harder to predict."

Ardiss shrugs, "If I am, what's wrong with that? I had plans. I was going to be great. A Visser, if not more! And instead I find myself working underneath someone who thinks that in order to succeed you have to do things that -" Ardiss cuts off abruptly and sets her glass down with more force than necessary. Some red liquid splashes out, but Ardiss ignores it. When she continues her voice is more controlled, "Then I land on this hunk of rock and even my plans for going my own direction are fouled. I'm out a host, a ship. I'm at the mercy of Yeerks I barely know, who are rebels."

There's nothing wrong with being upset that your plans are ruined. I am no fool. I know that I must move forward with this new life, whatever it may be. But that does not mean that I have to be jumping for joy over it."

"Yeah, I'll go see the Engineer and see what he can do."

Parker goes off to find the Engineer.

Temrash fell silent. He wasn't sure what to say that hadn't already been said. He sipped his drink, and thought about what the others were doing outside. "It seems like everyone in the Empire wants to be Visser. In some ways, that's the only way to survive. Most people high up don't think of the lower ranks as equals. And once you're up there, you start acting like the rest of the Vissers."

"How else can you survive in the Empire?" Ardiss asks, "If a Visser treats their underlings as equals they would be disgraced, or have a mutiny on their hands. And what Yeerk wants to be the underling, forced to follow the bidding of someone who is only interested in themselves? The only thing that is left is to push to become one of the tyrants themselves. It is our way of life."

Mar rolls his eyes at Ossanlin as if looking at an old friend, although they're more acquaintances and only faintly like one another. It must have something to do with having been inside someone else's head. "Well, I certainly wish you both good luck with that. Although I insist on seeing what Ossanlin looks like as a human."

Mar cackles in amusement and walks back into the Bar with a wide grin on his face. I can't believe I was even worried. I suppose I'll see the reason for their demonstration soon.

Upon reappearing, Mar catches part of Ardiss' last statement about becoming a Visser. Mar winces bitterly and walks up to where Ardiss is sitting. "If you imagine that existence as the tyrant in such a world is any better, you are sorely mistaken. At least the underlings can relate to one another when not trying to backstab one another to reach the top. I may not have been one of your kind, but I know what it means to exist in such a world. When you are so strongly in charge, you cannot relate even to your own subordinates for fear they are trying to overthrow you. Your peers if you have any are hardly any better, possibly worse. Not to mention that suddenly the burden of failure rests on you alone, and you are expected to know the solutions for every problem that comes your way. No small wonder that the weak-minded seek to blame those under them for their own failure!"

Alic yawned and peeked out form her arms at Ardiss. "You wouldn't make it as a Visser, anyway. Can't even get off this 'hunk of rock'!" She turned her head down again and wiggled her toes, wondering what her friends had gone off to do.

"I guess that's why I didn't last long. I did great things for the Empire but I kept having this annoying habit of treating my underlings like people. When they figured I was too much of a loose cannon to control, they cut me loose."
