As Wolffe placed his bet of 70 Han on the table, Radec picked up his glass. As Deucalion said that he would like to sit this competition out, Radec said, “Of course, Deucalion. Go and enjoy yourself. I know what you have heard of Wolffe here,” At this, he leaned over the table and whispered “Most of it’s true!”

As he went to place his glass to his lips, Radec noticed one of the creatures standing at the bar looking at them. Thinking that it would want to join them, he signalled with a wave of his hand for it to come over, though he was a little cautious of the scythe like blade on it’s tail. “Well then, Wolffe. Let’s get started!” At this, he took his drink, lifted it to his mouth, tilted his head back and let the liquor work it’s magic.

As tempting as it was to have some drinks with the group, she wouldn't. She had to stick around and keep an eye on this yeerk and the poor host. Alic wished she could rip out the nasty worm right now. <Maybe a little later..> she told Radec. <I shouldn't add any more liqour to my body quite yet. I've been at it all day.>
She would definately take him up on his offer. Why turn down some drinking fun?  Maybe Alic could find out what the group is doing in this part of the universe.

*Ossanlin shifts his eyes back and forth, still watching the new controller and thought directly to Alic...*  <<It is wrong Alic, yes.  I'm hoping that Myitt can make her see the light...I hope.  As for allowing her to reinfest an unwilling host...we can find a way around it, but I would not wish to allow her to enter an unwilling host again either.>>

*He glances over to Cor.*  <It's hardly a disease...I'm sure you were joking so I'll let it slide.>  *the smile barely touches his eyes this time.*

*Ossanlin's eyes turn back to the new controller.*  <Pardon me miss, I don't know your name, but you do not believe it is wrong to force a living, feeling, thinking being to remain confined within its own body without a whit or parsel of control over itself?  Imprisoned so another can escape?  I beg your pardon, but if I remember correctly, you and the Gedd were symbiotes...you now have enough technological ability to reproduce Gedd, enough to host your race, yet you look for other beings because...why?  It would take too long, or it would take too much effort, or you hate us so much that you want to make war?  I certainly don't mean to say that you can change the whole of your society, you are merely one among billions, but certainly you can see there are alternatives to ripping freedom and life away from others who know enough to enjoy such things.>

*Ossanlin shakes his head for a moment, gauging the situation again.*  <But I don't suppose I can completely blame your Empire either, after all they're guided by the dark hand of Crayak...they ARE the dark hand of Crayak.  But even He can be defeated if enough of us insignificant mites bite Him at the same time.>  *Ossanlin sighs, getting off subject again as he usually does.*  <The point is that any being with morals would not do what Yeerks do to involuntary hosts.  One with morals would try to find a kindred being, one who does not mind sharing body and mind with another.>

*Ossanlin's tail continues to sway back and forth over his hindquarters, his stalk-eyes again swiveling around the room.  He sends another private thought to Alic.*  <<Peace warrior...do not make your intentions so obvious, if we are to free this host, it would be much easier to have the Yeerk leave her voluntarily.>>

"Dark hand of Crayak?" Jagill asked. He and Temrash had only heard of Crayak and the Ellemist in passing earlier in their lives. But neither knew much. They always had more personal things to worry about.

“Of course I'm joking,” says Corliss, mildly amused.

Shal's shoulders begin to shake in silent laughter when she hears Ossanlin's comments referring to Crayak.

Keirdan squirms in his chair, waiting rather impatiently to see what Fletcher is doing.

Myitt giggles, sipping her drink.  "Ossanlin, as much as I cannot doubt the existence of the multidimensional entity called Crayak, there aren't any mystical powers-that-be controlling my destiny."  She shoots a quick look at Mar.  "Even if they may potentially have possession of the quantifiable dimensional energy that could be harboring my consciousness, occasionally called a 'soul', or until today, 'a bunch of nonsense'."

"We survive quite nicely, getting on quite well with our hosts," Corliss patiently tells Kara, trying to hide his frustration that this creature now knows their business.  "Most of the time, anyway.  It certainly isn't an easy life.  Simply put, we have come to realize that it is wrong to hardwire our people from grubhood to think that it is acceptable to suppress a creature that is self aware.  A creature that suffers for our benefit.  And much of the time, they are no less intelligent than any decently bright person within the Empire, which only makes matters morally even worse."

"Don't even try explaining, Cor," says Myitt darkly.  "She's not going to change in an instant.  You know how long it took me."

Fletcher shows Keidran Gaz's computer.

"I'm trying to see if there are any...jobs, you might call them," Fletcher said. "Captain Gaz over there pulled a nice haul the other week."

Fletcher looked at Gaz. "You were able to sell it, right?"

"I know who to talk to," Gaz replied. "You just worry about finding us another haul."

Gaz walked over to the bartender and slapped a few more coins on the counter.

"Another rum," she said.

While she waited, she turned and watched the drinking game in progress.

For a long moment Kar doesn't speak, unsure whom to address. The idea of responding to the Andalite obviously revolts her, so she answers him as though Myitt had posed the questions/comments, her face turning red from a combination of indignation, liquor and sheer confusion.

"Gedds are imperfect symbiotes. They are weak, they lack dexterity. Why should we be forced back into our pools while creatures such as these," she gestures to her body with a shaking hand, "destroy their own world with complete disregard for the gifts they have?"

To Corliss, she adds, "These creatures may be sentient, but they have produced more irrational violence and bloodshed in a century than the Yeerks have in millenia's. Isn't freedom a thing to be earned? Just as I had to earn the right to freedom from the pool - the right to a host?"

"No one said anything about forcing anyone back into any pools," says Myitt.  "Do you think I'd like that sort of life any more than you would?"  She shakes her head, sighing, and pours another shot.  "Ignorance really is bliss."

"Humans have also created much more beauty than our people have ever imagined," says Corliss simply.  "And to say that we haven't created our share of violence and bloodshed under the banner of the Council of Thirteen, in such a short amount of time, is an utter lie.  Why should we force people to earn a freedom that we took from them in the first place?  It's one hell of a Catch-22."

"I...I don't..." she hesitates, looking down at Mar angrily, as if this is all his fault. She searches for something to say, but her mind is blank. Stupid alcohol, she thinks bitterly, knowing that were her mind clear she would be able to come up with a brilliant counterargument. As it is, though, she merely glares downward.

"It isn't fair," she says at last.

"Heh heh heh. Isn't fair? Funny! Our greatest minds are no more than akceedents. Our greatest chance for help decide to kill us all. We were the first race of slaves. We had done nothing wrong, but our people became doomed. And you speak of unfairness? Your Council betray one who want to be your friend, and other species pay price."

"No, it's not fair," says Myitt grimly, swirling the glass around but not drinking.  "I am fond of a blunt human proverb: Life's a ****.  For my part, I simply came to the realization that I didn't want to continue serving a corrupt government that upheld something I no longer thought was right.  If I'm going to put my life on the line, and the lives of my host, my friends, my few siblings who still dare to associate with me--it's going to be for something worth fighting for."  She looks down at the drink.  "Wow, that was really clichè.  But isn't that what you've done?  You didn't believe what you were doing was right.  And so you left, and if you return, they will destroy you.  Does that seem right to you?"  She sips her drink, feeling her own clearheadedness starting to get a bit shaky.

<I thought we agreed no more drinking after yesterday?> Tara groans.

<Sure...sorry, kid.  I just get carried away with all of this.>

She sets the glass down, absentmindedly, and pushes it away.

Keirdan frowns. "That's boring. I want to play a game!" He grabs at the computer.

Shal sits up and turns around. She listens to the conversation taking place between Kara, Oss, and Myitt. She feels a slight sense of camaraderie with Kara, seeing as her own host was originally involuntary. She sighs, momentarily wondering what happened to Jess. She smiles at the hork bajir's comment, agreeing whole-heartedly.

((I stay away for a day or so and an army of posts comes to meet me. Ahhh, the Space Bar. ))

Mar glances around his back, trying to get a good look at the wound that is still probably there. There appears to be, peculiarly enough, a nasty-looking scar on the left side of Mar's back. It looks rather like a long slit with cracked edges surrounding it, indicating a scar that has long healed. Mar sighs almost tiredly. "It's fine, Corliss. Even in a physical form the sign of what happened remains, apparently."

Mar rests as much as he can, watching the argument being volleyed back and forth. He didn't think something like this would come up. It was hard for him to imagine that Kara might have an involuntary host. I may be able to use this to my advantage. It is her host and not her that finds me appealing.

The alcohol hasn't faded yet, so he feels the need to add his comment to the fire. "I have no qualms about slavery, but...that's because I'm rather morally challenged. As for the comment about the Yeerks...being the hand of Crayak in the game..." *Mar winces at the still aching pain, but holds up a hand. "...I've heard rumors of that from my Sentinels. So that is true, then?"
