Tora keeps her eyes trained on Myitt as she carefully responds. "Serid has expressed his opinion that his life is worth more than those of the members of the rebellion. As much as I would like to believe he could be expected to make the right decisions for the war..." she lets the sentence hang.

Although her tone is brusque, Tora at least has the grace to continue speaking to Myitt in private thought-speech. <<Do you truly think he is a candidate to join us? Myitt, I would not feel comfortable with anything short of placing him within guarded restraints every time Illim feeds. If they are to be fully trusted as a pair, the impetus for Serid's change is going to have to be initiated internally, and that is nothing we can control. In addition, it would have to be verified by infestation.>>

She glances to Illim, who is fidgeting uncomfortably and wiping condensation off the sides of his now-lukewarm glass of Guinness. It is clear from the way he is looking between the two women that he expects a silent conversation is taking place.

Returning her gaze to Myitt, she adds in a somewhat softer tone, <<We can risk nothing for a stranger. Knowing Illim's truest intentions is an impossibility.>>

Myitt shakes her head slightly.

"No, you're right, of course," she says softly.  She looks at Illim.  "The issue of course lies with your host.  We're not in the business of forcing people to serve with us against their will, although it is apparent that Serid is voluntary.  Unless you're putting on an elaborate ruse."

Myitt shrugs and looks at Tora again.  "We could always perform a memory dump on them," she says flatly.  "You know those are my absolute favorite."

Illim arches a dubious eyebrow. "I don't think those things are exactly FDA-approved."

"We could, you're right," Tora allows with a nod, ignoring Illim's interjection. "It is, however, unnecessary at this time. Even if Serid were to change his mind, by the time he did, we would be long gone. I, for one, do not have the faith in him that Reven had in me--that is, enough to provide me with a method of communicating him."

Serid gives an internal growl. <<Why should I want to change my mind, when she is speaking like that?>>

<<She's got every right to be suspicious of you,>> Illim murmurs as he watches them, taking a sip of his drink.

"Right," Myitt says briskly, placing her hands on the wooden table.  "Well, it's been a pleasure chatting with both of you, I wish you the best in your endeavors."  She slowly picks up the Dracon, pointed down, and places it back in her left pocket.  "If you change your mind, you don't know how to find us, so have a nice life."

She smiles at Illim, then at Tora.  "Ready to go?" Myitt turns and starts walking toward the door.

Tora gives a curt nod and stands, following Myitt without so much as a backward glance at the thunderstruck Illim. Even Serid is startled at the abrupt end of the conversation.

"Wait," the Yeerk says, putting his palms down on the table to push himself to his feet, his chair making an awful scraping sound against the warped floor. "Myitt--" His voice sounds strangled, but no further sounds come out of his open mouth. His expression undergoes a series of relatively quick transformations, from surprise to concern to terse irritation.

Stirring, Serid warns him, <<She is attempting to bait you.>>

<<Well, it's working,>> Illim growls back.

"Can't you give us... just a day or two to try to sort things out?" he asks, shoving his hands in his jumpsuit pockets, his shoulders hunching a little.

Focused as he is on watching for Myitt's reaction, Tora's pronounced look of disdain--eyebrows arched and nose wrinkled--does not escape him.

Myitt stops mid-stride, turning to face Illim and setting her hands on her hips.

"A day or two?" Myitt repeats, incredulous.  "You're telling me your Yeerk-hating friend, bent as he is on getting revenge on my friend, is going to come around in a couple of days and be perfectly willing to not only work with us, but agree not to outright attack us from within?"

She shakes her head.  "I wasn't born yesterday, you know.  I'm going to need more from you than what you've already shown me.  Come on, Tora...let's go home."

Myitt turns back towards the door with an exasperated sigh.

Terenia lets out a mental sigh as she enters the pool's surface. After everything that has happened she is actually glad to be back in her blind, deaf, helpless form. She flashes back to the hours after her brother's death, years ago, when she had first decided to become a Yeerk nothlit. Yes, this was the ideal form for someone like her, who even as a human existed only as a leech.

Her dark thoughts are interrupted by the sudden movement of the pool water. She has been joined by another Yeerk. Curious and a little hopeful, Terenia sends out echolocation, trying to discern who it might be.

Trey starts when Kevlin appears, asking if he wants to enter. He is about to respond, but suddenly becomes distracted by a young girl exiting the ship with eyes that are comically large at the moment. She approaches him and says hello, and he instantly discerns her voice as the panicked human from aboard the Skrit Na ship.

"You're young," he blurts in surprise. Instantly a bright red blush spreads across his face. "I mean, uh...sorry. I just haven't seen anyone closer to my age here. Um...right. Sorry. Are you alright?" He averts his gaze while babbling, the tips of his ears deepening to a dark red.

Tora walks with Myitt, pushing open the door and holding it ajar for her to pass through, giving her a small nod of approval.

Illim watches them with a pained frown before sinking back into his chair, looking away. <<Nice job,>> he grumbles to his host. <<There goes our chance of being productive--not to mention fed--individuals for the foreseeable future.>>

<<You knew that this was a possibility when you decided to tamper with the biofilters,>> Serid remarks in irritation.

<<No,>> Illim growls. <<They would've accepted us and you know it. That Myitt, she seems reasonable. She's just trying to keep her people safe. This wouldn't have been a problem if Ertoran hadn't happened to be a member of the rebellion. I honestly don't know what else you could have expected her to do; she couldn't return home any more than you could.>>

Serid gives a silent harrumph. <<It does not erase her cowardice.>>

"Ugh, I don't want to hear it," the Yeerk mutters, running a hand through his hair and standing to return Myitt's cold coffee mug to the bar.

Corliss sends back a sonar message.

<Hello, Terenia,> he says, sort of at a loss.  <It's me.  Corliss.  Are you...are you hurt?>

---

"Thanks," Myitt mutters irritably, stalking past Tora and back outside.  She glances back at the Andalite.  "Why do I feel guilty?"

Her boots kick up bits of gravel as she marches along in the direction of her ship.

"I mean, I don't even know them!  Do you think...maybe we should give them some supplies?"  Myitt stares at the ground as she walks, eyes tracking.  "Help me out, here.  Serid's your friend, do you really want them to die out here?  Maybe they won't die.  Maybe...ugh, I don't know."

Relief floods through Terenia at the "sound" of Corliss, though behind it is a hollow sort of feeling. I left him for a reason, she reminds herself. I don't belong with him or the rebellion. She pushes the depressing notion aside, for the time being, concentrating on the fact that he is here now.

<I'm not hurt,> Terenia responds, sounding more abrupt than she intended. <I don't know what happened with Efaen, though. She was fine one minute, and the next I couldn't control anything. She was just...out of control.>

<What attacked you?  Out there?> he replies, swimming a bit closer.  <Temrash said it was some sort of human, but Efaen was unconscious for so long...>

Mike leans on the table, his head resting in his hand, watching the two Yeerks.

He makes sure they're located along the med bay cabinetry some distance away from Efaen's body, and especially her restrained tail.  Voices in the cabin make him wonder curiously what's going on with the Skrit Na ship, but he's so exhausted he hardly cares.

In a few moments he finds himself dozing, slumped halfway over the metal cabinet in front of the portable pool.

When Trey commented that she was young, Vanessa's ears pinked. But she managed to say with a semi-straight face. "Not too young to be abducted by ****roach aliens and taken to be paraded around a zoo, apparently."

Shrugging the backpack up on her shoulders, the girl hesitated, then extended her hand slowly to him. "I'm Vanessa."

"It is an unfortunate situation for the Yeerk, to be sure; he may well be an upstanding individual. But there is no helping the identity of his host. I doubt that he would leave Serid... for who else would prevent him from attacking me?"

Tora shrugs and gives her friend a humorless smile. "Perhaps Illim will find something useful to do, but you should not think about him. Be grateful for the free coffee and forget the meeting ever happened."

She continues walking forward stiffly, turning her head to the woods ahead. "I plan to."

Illim slides the dirty mugs towards the bartender and returns to his table, holstering the Dracon he had offered to Myitt as he sits down.

Catching sight of Myitt and Tora's retreating forms out the window, he watches them for a moment, chewing the inside of his lip. Then he utters a curse and seizes his beer for a large gulp.

Soul Silver dropped and looked around before seeing the others and taking off after them.

Evil Silver went to stand by her master. "We have a whole bar to enlighten into The One's protection." She smiled wickedly.

Mar slowly releases his grip on Elayne's arm, his body losing his tension as he realizes that she is attempting to help him. He was afraid for a moment that she would leave without warning. Mar mentally chides himself for thinking this. Elayne is far too sweet for that, isn't she? Right, right. Mar takes his hand off her shoulder and backs off, crossing his arms.

"It might work," states Mar, although he sounds unsure of that. "The demon summoned must bend to the will of the summoner as long as the summoner remains in the circle. In this case, bending to your will might include behaving as I did here. But, Elayne...summoning a Highest is no easy task. And you're hardly a professional. You might lose the connection. Though it is worth the attempt."
