Psychic computers
« on: November 16, 2011, 04:10:49 PM »
Let's talk about the computers in Animorphs. It's said more than once that they have psychic links and it's implied that it is supposed to be a common form of advancement among computers, that only primitive societies don't have them. Really, how does that work? I can see how it would work with the Andalites since they are a telepathic species, but Yeerks aren't telepathic, and humans certainly aren't. Technology is built around the species that uses it, and conforms to their bodies and their standards of living. Also, the very idea of psychic computers seems... well, silly. How would one even ACCESS it? It also stands to reason that if one didn't have absolute concentration, it wouldn't work right. By this reasoning, old-fashioned computers with physical interfaces and monitors would be better. Are the Andalite computers some form of bio-computer?

Anyway, discuss.

Science channel used to have this commercial about a computer being developed that would let you call up things with your mind, but I don't remember the entire ad :(

first off, the whole telepathic computer has been in a ton of sci fi so its just kinda tradition to have the computers be telepathic, so why not?

anyway, the yeerks kinda do have a sort of telepathy, but it seemed like only with their hosts. like in #6 when jake is enslaved, i think when the yeerk speaks to him it has the <> signs tht indicate tht its telepathy. the computers might read more of like brain waves? only its easier for the andalites to do this because their brain waves are already channeled for talking, so it'd just have to be directed towards the computer for it to work.

that and the fact tht an english (major?) wrote the book to the best of her ability. and the computers make sense for andailites. and the yeerks stole a lot of andalite technology. so tht why they had it (logical jump). if u wanted an interesting book tht was mostly about the characters then u have an english major who did tons of research for it write it and u get the animorphs. if u want something totally correct, then u get a scientist or a specialist who specifies in tht area, giving u the movie Contagion (totally medically acurate, but horrible movie)

I think in the case of the Yeerks, they were more of a voice-recognition thing. I don't recall them being able to do the 'psychic-computer' thing.
I reckon it was more of a KA-plot-convenience guimmick. It would be too inconvenient to have the Anis interact with computers that were designed for different alien races. Better to uniform it in one thing.
Much like the same way the Anis need a more convenient way to keep track of time, so they gave the Andalite military a time/compass/altitude sensor...

I think its because the andalites are just arrogant.  They think any race without the stuff they have is funny and backwards.  Can they BE more arrogant?

Also, this.
It's amazing how sci-fi craziness ends up becoming close to reality.

I refuse to remove this sig because of some petty argument. RAF must remain solid.
