Title: Hi! I'm ghost!
Post by: A ghost you know on May 22, 2010, 11:24:22 PM
Hi! I'm a ghost you know (yep, I go by my alias - I'm more paranoid than Marco from the Animorphs), but feel free to call me ghost.
Here's a little bit about me:
* I'm an IT guy, with computer programming as my strong suit.
* I love math & science, which is probably where my love of computers came from
* My idea of fun is to spend some time programming, thinking of practical ways to implement currently impossible sci-fi ideas (such as morphing), reading a good book, or surfing the Internet.
* I started reading the Animorphs series about a month ago, and instantly got hooked. I was so hooked, in fact, that I read the whole series (including the Andalite Chronicles, the Hork-Bajir Chronicles, and Visser) in about a week.
* Somebody may have blended the Animorphs' DNA and used it to create me (j/k), because I have each one's major trait. Rachel - I'm a warrior too, and I also have a major dark side that I alternately nourish and fight. How far I'm willing to go to win sometimes scares me, too. Jake - I know the pain of being a leader and having to make decisions that will have nasty side effects. The weird part is that I've never had to send somebody to their death (like Jake did in book #54), but I can still identify with his feelings while he did it. Marco - I'm super-paranoid. Good luck finding any personal information about me, including my name, country, or timezone. I also have the ability to be absolutely ruthless on occasion, although that's heavily balanced (see below). Tobias - I'm somewhat of a loner, too. I also get quite depressed on occasion. Ax - I don't yell about "bun-zuh!" but I do go a little crazy around sweets sometimes. Cassie - I have a bit of an itchy conscience, too. I definitely see (and agree with) many of her condemnations of the others' behavior.
* Rachel is my favorite animorph, primarily because I feel exactly like her in most ways. My username was actually inspired by her; she is "the ghost I know"
* I'm definitely on the unusual side. For example, I frequently wish for various powers, especially the ability to morph or blast fire/Shredder beams/(insert something deadly here) from my hands. I also wish I could save the world (don't we all?)

Well, I guess that's about it.
I've already received a couple of welcomes, and my overall impression of this forum is that it's a wonderful place to be. I'm looking forward to a long, pleasant stay with you guys! :D

Cheers!

hey there, welcome to RAF.
i'm goom, the second admin on the forum (with richard, our namesake).
i found this place via another animorph forum (one i didn't care for nearly as much). how'd you come across it?
wikipedia? Google?

glad you found the series and enjoyed them (in a week?!) .

as you may notice by the above banner, its RAFparty time!
that means in the bored board (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/board,1.50.html) messages will add to your postcount (when typically they don't).

make yourself at home. RAF is your new sanctuary! :goom:
(feel free to ask us if you have any questions, we won't bite.)

Scroogle (https://ssl.scroogle.org), actually. (It's essentially anonymized Google - it sends searches to Google, but doesn't do any data gathering like Google does)
I was looking for the Animorphs in e-book format, and this site turned up as the #2 result and mentioned in the #1 result (a Yahoo! Answers question). The rest, as they say, is history.

I read quickly, particularly when it's a book (or series) I like. ;D

Thanks for the info!
Just wondering, does postcount do anything particularly special? (Come to think of it, does postcount explain the two karma points I have that apparently didn't come from any users? One point when I hit 10 posts and one when I hit 20, perhaps?)

you get 1 karma from an applaud. -1 for a smite.
1 for making a thread, but 2 for making a RAFparty thread.

post count is good for increasing ranks (and ultimately privileges).

both are mostly for show ;)

if you're new to forums, or feel like (possibly) learning something, head over here. http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=3160.0

I'm not new to forums (I've using them for probably a year and a half), but I am new to SMF forums. Fortunately, the tags are like their phpBB3 equivalents.

lol, I know just what you mean. For almost every forum I'm on, I have to remind myself not to post just for the sake of bumping my count. Fortunately that urge seems to have mostly died lately.

See, that urge has never gone away with me.  :-X Well, it goes away when a forum becomes inactive. XD So... basically... I hope it never goes away here. ^_^

if you want to get acquainted with some RAFians, we've got a chat over here (http://chat.animorphsforum.com/rooms.php) and skype occasionally (i've got a list).

personally (besides on RAFparties) i've learned that quality > quantity.
sure, if you can juggle both that's fine. but if i put the majority of my time trying to improve posts, i'm typically happier with myself.

oh, and before i forget:

What kind of chat is that, IRC?

I try to improve posts before posting (a lot of people I know get trigger-happy if I edit my posts too many times), but other than that I agree.

Quote from: Kit Cloudkitter
oh, and before i forget:
  • double posting is frowned upon, but if you mistakenly do it here it'll be merged.
  • you may notice that an abundance of members have 'kit' in their name. it's an inside joke, but the fad will probably end soonish.
OK, thanks!
What is this joke with all the kits? During my visits here, I've noticed a lot just from the "Users logged in today" section, and it looked a bit weird to me... then again, as Marco would say, I'm a guy posting under a username inspired by a dead girl who never existed, on a board dedicated to discussing kids who turn into animals and fight brain-stealing slugs with the help of another alien. This is just another typical day.

basically, a member was confused about our 2 kits. (kit cloudkicker and kitsunemarie.)
we've also got a few lurkers with 'kit', but those don't really count.

so, to further the point, we all changed our names to incorporate kit ;)

skype is a voice(chat) program. holds multiple people, completely free.

basically, a member was confused about our 2 kits. (kit cloudkicker and kitsunemarie.)
... which is totally stupid, as "kitsune" doesn't come from English, but Japanese, and mean "fox"... Nothing the same... Anyway, it'll probably disappear soon.

So... let's begin. I think we'll see you around very often, and you like computers and programming, and Animorphs, so you'll probably like what will follow...
First, wHELLcome!
I'm Vis... I'm Dameg, another RAFian. *Approach the ghost without even being able to see his (her? it?) face* Come with me, please, I have something to show you. It's here, after this door *Open a heavy door* We call them the RAFprojects. *Lead the ghost to a long and dark hallway, with many doors, some in the dark, some with light coming from the other side. Arrive near the first door* Here at your left...

- The Ebooks project: [Help wanted!] Animorphs (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=14.0 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=14.0)), Remnants (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,157.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,157.0.html) <= finished), Everworld (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,331.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,331.0.html) <= almost finished, it's our current priority, we need help to correct the volume #3 and check all the volumes to be sure there is no missing page) and GONE (new project?); the Everworld/Animorphs ebooks need to be cleaned a little (mistakes, missing pages, we don't know where the chapters begin and finish, etc.) so if you wanna be a correcter... call me, I head that projects.

Facing it is...

- RAFipedia: http://rafipedia.wetpaint.com/ (http://rafipedia.wetpaint.com/), an encyclopedia headed up by Estelore, our star (a true star, who make light and burn in space... but she has a body to come on Earth);

Next it's...

- the Audiobooks project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=15.0 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=15.0), a full-cast audio version of Animorphs who need more "actors" and voices, headed by Kit Cloudkicker (Jess), MrGuy, Morfowt, and Wildweathel;

and here...

- the Graphic Novel project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,416.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,416.0.html) and http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2276.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2276.0.html), a Webcomic headed by Gafrash.

You also have...

- the Smiley project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1691.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1691.0.html), we make Animated gifs, smileys about Animorphs (Andalites, Hork-Bajirs...);

here and facing it is...

- the Translation project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1907.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1907.0.html), a recently started project/mutual support group for translations into other languages; currently only in French (Tocade, Anidragon and myself), Chinese (Morfowt), Indonesian (Nat), Swedish (Mira and Zana), and Esperanto (Wildweathel); we translate only the volumes never edited in our countries/languages, to make the ebooks;

Next door is for the special project:

- http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3738.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3738.0.html): the adventures of the RAFians;

At the end it's for the little projects:

- the http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3810.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3810.0.html);

- the http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3911.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3911.0.html) to make the planets we hear about in Animorphs;

- the paper-RPG project: a role-playing game (on table, with paper, pen and dices...) about the World of Animorphs; I head this project, and it'll be write in French at the beginning, but we need help to find, class and write everything we know about the species, the planets, the powers we see in Animorphs, fix them, see what we keep and what we can't keep (because of the KASU, not clear, exception for the main characters/books, etc.), complete the knowledges about species/planets we know and even create new species/planets...; this project will be on my own website, so if you wanna join, ask me the link ^^;

- the RPG project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,4069.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,4069.0.html) to make a video game about Animorphs, with RPGmaker;

- the Command-line game project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3787.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3787.0.html) for another kind of video game about Animorphs;

- the http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3773.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3773.0.html) where we count all the people killed by the Animorphs;

- the RAFkaraoke: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3150.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3150.0.html) and http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3635.msg245735.html#msg245735 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3635.msg245735.html#msg245735), where we make songs and sing them...

and some other projects who come and go. Please check the list: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/board,13.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/board,13.0.html)

*Standing in front of the ghost* I hope you enjoyed your visit. Oh, and I also invite you to add your species on this list: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2154.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2154.0.html) 'coz everybody isn't Human here. And we like to know who is what... For example, as you'll probably see, I'm a Controller. ... and if you want, you can add your age too: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,318.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,318.0.html)...
We also opened a http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=36.0 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=36.0) to teach to each others our languages and other stuffs.

Now I have to go, I don't invite you for the meal, sorry. *Beginning to go down dark stairs. The ghost can hear a cry coming from the cave.*
Have fun!
*Dameg disappears into the darkness, Ghosty (Casper? :P) is now alone in the hallway*

I second goom on the invitation to join us in RAFchat and/or Skype sometime. Now I have to go, I don't invite you for the meal, sorry. *Beginning to go down dark stairs. The ghost can hear a cry coming from the cave.*
Have fun!
*Dameg disappears into the darkness, Ghosty (Casper? :P) is now alone in the hallway*
Thanks a lot! That was a very fun & interesting tour! And btw, I'm not Casper ( :P ) - I have a much darker nature than that...

I was wondering when you were going to post over here, Ghost! Good to formally meet you!
Nice to meet you, too!
Sorry I didn't post here sooner, but real life has been busy. I'm finally taking a bit of a break over the weekend.

Quote from: KitsuneMarie
I second goom on the invitation to join us in RAFchat and/or Skype sometime. Here's a good opportunity to meet more folks, if you're interested: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=5129.0 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=5129.0). But Skype and RAFchat are pretty much always populated in the evenings. Come hang out any ol' time!
I'll probably join you guys in RAFchat in a few weeks (I'm still very busy IRL). Unfortunately, I can't make it to that RAF slumber party; I'll be up for the better part of that night dealing with some major problems.
Also, when you say "Skype and RAFchat are pretty much always populated in the evenings", what timezone do you mean?

No worries, folks being busy seems to be the name of the game recently. I hope life will give you a little break soon. :)

Evening RAFchat and Skype sessions are generally populated by folks between Eastern and Pacific time zones, although we do sometimes catch New Zealanders and Australians during their afternoon breaks and Europeans during their wee hours of the morning.

Anyway, glad to see you here, hope you'll stick around!

So... let's begin. I think we'll see you around very often, and you like computers and programming, and Animorphs, so you'll probably like what will follow...
Yep, you'll probably be seeing a lot of me.

Quote from: Dameg
First, wHELLcome!
I'm Vis... I'm Dameg, another RAFian.
Nice to meet you, Dameg!
Just wondering, what's with the started & dropped name? Were you a Visser once?
I'm Visser 25... You have some Vissers on RAF, actually, and maybe some Sub-Vissers and random Controllers.

Come with me, please, I have something to show you.

I've read the Animorphs e-books, and I think you guys have a great project going. I'd be happy to help; just let me know what you need and when.
We always need help. The Everworld and Animorphs ebooks are far to be perfect! Missing pages, mistakes everywhere, size of the columns and of the characters who change all the time... Please check (totally!) the first message of http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=2975.0 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=2975.0). It's there that I write the needs and the updates.

Quote from: Dameg
Facing it is...

- RAFipedia: http://rafipedia.wetpaint.com/ (http://rafipedia.wetpaint.com/), an encyclopedia headed up by Estelore, our star (a true star, who make light and burn in space... but she has a body to come on Earth);
Interesting! I found some of the RAF quotes especially good; I have a feeling we'll get along very well. I might need to upgrade my insanity module a bit though.

Quote from: Dameg
Next it's...

- the Audiobooks project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=15.0 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=15.0), a full-cast audio version of Animorphs who need more "actors" and voices, headed by Kit Cloudkicker (Jess), MrGuy, Morfowt, and Wildweathel;
Interesting!

Quote from: Dameg
- the Graphic Novel project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,416.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,416.0.html) and http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2276.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2276.0.html), a Webcomic headed by Gafrash.

You also have...

- the Smiley project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1691.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1691.0.html), we make Animated gifs, smileys about Animorphs (Andalites, Hork-Bajirs...);
I can get some more smilies; I don't draw very well, but I'm pretty good at getting Scroogle to find what I want. Time to drop a few posts in these threads.

Quote from: Dameg
here and facing it is...

- the Translation project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1907.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1907.0.html), a recently started project/mutual support group for translations into other languages; currently only in French (Tocade, Anidragon and myself), Chinese (Morfowt), Indonesian (Nat), Swedish (Mira and Zana), and Esperanto (Wildweathel); we translate only the volumes never edited in our countries/languages, to make the ebooks;
Sadly, I don't know any languages but English.
But you can learn other languages, not only teach... Teachers always need students ^^

Quote from: Dameg
Next door is for the special project:

- http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3738.0.html (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3738.0.html): the adventures of the RAFians;

Haha... hey, Ghost ^_^ Glad you made an intro thread, because, yeah, RAF is an incredibly cool place. I know I've been changing my name a lot lately, but my default name that I'm sure I'll revert to eventually is Aluminator. You can call me Al. Or Scott. Or Lumy. Or Goob. Or, basically, whatever the heck you want, as long as I know you're referring to me :P

I highly encourage exploration of the forum. There's a ton here in addition to good Animorphs-generated discussions, and you're bound to find a fair amount of it interesting. Most of all, enjoy ^_^

Yeah, it gets pretty confusing sometimes! The worst was when Steph and Aluminator (currently Kit2 Hawk2) changed their profiles, signatures, type fonts--everything--to be identical. The only way to tell them apart was by post and karma counts.

Another thing that's confusing is that folks tend to call each other by the same name forever, no matter what their new names are. Not to mention nicknames. If you ever need to know who someone is, just ask. Soon you'll know everyone backwards and forwards like a Generation 1 pro!

Also... you should RAFchat some time. ;D

Generation 1? What generations? (I saw mention of generations in the RAF animated series, but that didn't help much)
I'm guessing it has something to do with when people signed up - Gen 1 is probably the first people to sign up - but how do you separate different generations?

Yeeeeeeah, it was confusing enough for those of us who had been here a bit. I hope we didn't scare off anyone who joined at a bad time!

Regarding generations, you're correct: generations are a way to lump together groups of folks who joined RAF around the same time as each other. Here's the official thread: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=2887.0 (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=2887.0).

Generations 1-7 actually joined RAF on a different server. From the little I know, those generations are somewhat nebulous in their beginning and ending dates, and they're often named after important events that happened during that time (like the creation of the Animorphs e-book project). Generations 8-11 are defined with a bit more temporal specificity.

You can submit your name under the generation thread for Gen 11 at any time, although Richard may wait to add folks from your generation until we're in Gen 12 so that we know who's truly sticking around.

I look forward to seeing you in RAFchat and such. Good luck with all your busy hecticness! ;D

Ah, I see. I take it the more-rigid generation definitions came when the idea of generations became a standard part of RAF life?
As for truly sticking around, I don't plan on going anywhere. Nevertheless, unexpected things do happen on occasion; I've had to take a leave of absence from other places before. I just hope that won't happen here!

Yeah, I'd be surprised if you didn't stick around, simply judging from how quickly your post count has grown! You became a RAFregular pretty quickly! :)

But yes, I think that's why the generations became more systematic. Personally, I like the more easily-defined generation system. It works well for my little pea brain!

Hiya ghost, I'm Tara :D  Welcome to RAF!  Wow, you speed demoned through the series, in a week!  Wowsers.  Sorry if I missed it below, but did you have a favorite book?  I'm pretty sure mine were the Chronicles, especially Visser, but I really enjoyed #41 and #19.  What do they all have in common?   Well, major Yeerk characters or major viewpoints into Yeerk society...yeah, I think Yeerks are pretty great.  It's a little sad, really.

You know what, I'm almost glad we don't have as much of an insanely detailed canon knowledge base as say, Star Wars or Star Trek...because I'm pretty sure I'd try to learn Galard or Yeerkish or something!   :P

My boyfriend Dave (Pez001, who is now occasionally posting of his own free will on RAF!) is a computer guy, insofar as he's a computer animator :)

I prefer the date-based system. My timesense is totally screwed, so I'd probably regularly get generations confused if they were based off notable events...

Hi Tara, nice to meet you!
Some Yeerks aren't so bad. I have become more enlightened about this since I came here. (Thanks Dameg!)
As for my favorite book... well, I really like them all. For humor, the ones where Ax or Marco narrate are absolutely perfect. For a serious look at life, Jake's can't be beaten. And Rachel's ones are in a league of their own.

You know what, I'm almost glad we don't have as much of an insanely detailed canon knowledge base as say, Star Wars or Star Trek...because I'm pretty sure I'd try to learn Galard or Yeerkish or something!   :P
lol, I know what you mean. I'm almost glad morphing tech doesn't exist because I'd probably try to acquire a tiger and get myself killed.

My boyfriend Dave (Pez001, who is now occasionally posting of his own free will on RAF!) is a computer guy, insofar as he's a computer animator :)
Cool!
I don't do graphics/animation yet, but I'm planning on learning soon. Definitely fascinating stuff.

I might direct your attention toward the Galaxy's Edge Space Bar and its associated spin-offs, if you like RPGs...my characters are sort of odd ducks within the Yeerk range of normal personalities x3  That is to say...they're crazy.  Well...the Empire thinks they're crazy, because they won't take involuntary hosts, and they're basically...terrori sts...anyway.

I definitely tried to morph my cats and my dog, as a kid, but it totally never worked.  >.>  Super lame.

And good luck with the computer field, I think there's always going to be a good job market for it and you've gotta do what you really like :D  If you have any questions feel free to ask Pez001 :)

I've seen some of those RPG's, and I'm currently watching a couple from the sidelines. Maybe I'll join one eventually, but not now. I'm still not familiar enough with them.

Nah, that's not lame. I haven't actually tried morphing, but I perpetually think about it and, worse still, I try to think of a practical way to create morphing technology. Now that is lame. :P

Meh, I don't know about the job market; it's been pretty weird lately, even in computer fields. Heck, even MS has cut over 5,000 people. I'm hoping things start turning upwards again soon, though.

WHAT?!!! You don't know Galard?!! What kind of Yeerk are you?!!!
Well, you're not the only one, in fact. Many Yeerks born on Earth don't know more than few words of Galard, and speak only their host's language =_='

About the names changing all the time, I can't follow everything either. So I just use the nickname they have on the moment, even if I recognize them :P
It's already hard for me to remember the nicknames of other Internet friends, and the names of the Yeerks around me (when they change their hosts often, it's really hard! I have to remember both their name and their host's name, sometimes... Hopefully, I only care about some Vissers, my Sub-Vissers and my friends and brothers.)...

The bar is pretty easy to join--I should mention that the spinoffs are pretty much closed, since they are based on the decisions certain characters had made at the GESB itself.  But, new ones form once in a while, and if you have the writing chops and want to join in the fun, all it takes is walking through the door, and maybe ordering a drink.  ;)

Nah that's not lame, that's the mind of an engineer!  And perhaps a good biotechnologist!  :D  I've worked in biotech (though I really didn't care for it much) and paleontology so creating and thinking about implausible creatures or technologies is part of the fun of the job :)

Of course I know Galard, I was merely keeping up appearances...;)  And if you must know I wasn't born on Earth.  Hmph.   ;D

Maybe later. For now, though, I'm content to watch. (I actually just finished reading the entire Introduction Randomness thread - truly some cool stuff going on in there! I might join that later if a new problem crops up or the current problem goes out of control)

Biotech... I've always been fascinated by that, particularly the attempts to create nanobots to help supplement the body's natural immune system.
I've never gotten into biotech, but I may someday.

I'm glad you're enjoying yourself already around here, ghosty :D

I worked in the microbiology quality control and buffer/media solution chemistry groups in pharmaceutical biotech, which is way lamer than nanotech, but I guess somebody's gotta crank out those quality drugs x3

Hey ghosty! I haven't officially introduced myself yet, despite watching you be all lurky on the GESB. :P

I'm Terenia/Teach/T/Jessi. I answer to any of those, and a few other random names. It's great to see someone becoming so active so quick. It seems as though you fit right in around here!

Let me know if you need anything, welcome to RAF and I hope to see you in the GESB in the future!

Hi Jess! Good to see you again!
Two minor corrections, if you don't mind.
#1: You're not a dork, you are awesome. Your title says so. :)
#2: I'm not awesome yet. I'm still working on that, and I've arrived at the conclusion it's a lifelong job. Seriously. (Or am I just going about it the wrong way?)

Jess, he's right. You're flat out awesome, and your dorktitude only serves to amplificate your awesomosity.

Ghosty, you're a bit (meaning a lot) more awesome than you give yourself credit for.

Good point about the superheroes. Where are a few real-world superheroes when you need them?

Who says we're all superheroes?  >:D  Supervillains are so much more angsty, and they have freeze rays and giant goggles and sometimes, even an evil little pet, with a name like Mad Cat or Mr. Bigglesworth or Flotsam and Jetsam...
