Title: A coupla Andalite doodles
Post by: Thea on October 01, 2009, 03:19:31 PM
Hello all, I thought I'd butt in with a few doodles I did in biro while standing around between lectures at my University. I do not know why he has a beard. And a mohican. So please do not ask.

Don't you sometimes just want to go for a good old run? And sometimes, if you are really daring, go for a good old leap? Visser Three does. Visser Three was having a hard time of it, poor hellslug bent on world domination that he was. He sometimes felt like he was unpopular, like he had no friends. Don't you just hate that? Alloran was the only one close to him, and he regularly told him to go roll under the foot of an overweight Jubba Jubba. So it didn't really count.

He couldn't help decapitating anything that spoke. It was a nervous twitch, and he's had it since he was a young Yeerk. He was very sensitive about it. But still no one understood.

Visser Three sighed.

Only yesterday, Sub Visser Fifteen, had said that his fur was poofy! Now Visser Three could take some criticism. He could understand people saying that his fur was fluffy, yes. Even wild! He could even accept dishevelled to the point of anarchy. But poofy? Well that was just mean.

And so Visser Three ran. And leaped! He was just a big blue puppydog really. And when no one was looking...he frolicked.

:o  Those are amazing!!!!

The first ones look kinda "evil", but of course, considering your subjects, that's probably the look you were going for.

Man, that's just incredible.  You've got the musculature down so well, and the detail is just stunning!  Great work!

You're going to put those on your DA account, right?  Because I wanna fav them.

Aw bless, thank you! Aye they are in the deviantart account http://theraevyn13.deviantart.com/ a coupla pages in. Glaring at all the other fanart.

To be honest, I seldom lend any accuracy to the muscle structure of anything I draw. I rely on the ol' 'put enough detail on it and no one will question it' but if you reckon it looks alright, well, that's a happy thought!

Edit: Also I just realised you're the one who joint makes the Animorphs smileys, I adore those so much, they're the best Animorphs smileys ever done! I stole them to put on my comp whenever I need to see something to make me smile (elfangor in a mustang elfangor in a mustang elfangor in a mustang)

Haha, yeah, I remember you commenting on my DA page.

For some reason, I never checked out your artwork, though.  Man, I'm sorry I didn't.

As for the muscle structure, sure it looks a little different from what would be "anatomically correct" on a human.  But that's a good thing!  Andalites are aliens, and your drawings seem to emphasize that fact.  Too many drawings I see just show Andalites as a melding of human and horse parts, and they don't look like aliens at all.

i've never seen anything quite like it. +1

Wicked. Thank you. I like making the Andys look all bony and sinister, I never approved much of the soft fluffy ones on some of the covers. I just realised something kinda amusing - those three ancient ones at the bottom, I just remembered I did those when I was 12, had a sh** internet connection, and was waiting for each individual page to load. Those pages were all Animorphs websites.

Oy, obsession, I love thee

In your new drawings the Andalites look a little starved...

But all of your drawings look really good.  The level of detail is pretty amazing!

Hee yeh, I like jutting bones and muscles in my doodles. Which reminds me of something that's been on my mind for ages, can Andalites get fat? I mean, if they only absorb nutrients (which I'm also not entirely sure what that means) can they ever be overweight? It's probably not possible, though.

It's so sad... Your reality is one of my nightmare. I broke my right wrist when I was 3, and about 2 years ago I fell and 3 of my fingers of the right hand turned to the top of my hand (don't know how to say, but they turned in the wrong way ^^'). But I always healed with no problem. My right hand only hurt a little now, where the fingers were hurt, it isn't perfect, but I still can draw.
But I'm alsways afraid I'd hurt my right hand and can no longer draw... I draw since... since I took a pencil in my hand ^^' I don't remember if it was before or after 3 years old :p
To not draw... Oh, my dear sister, I'm so sad for you!!! >_< *crying alone in front of her computer*

Don't cry don't cry, that'll make me sad! It's actually more of a blessing, because I once spent an entire year trying to get a job in the arts, in just anything arty, and there aren't any in this country and it was like chasing my own tail. Now I'm looking for something more practical and I stand a much better chance!

I hope you'll find something then ^^ But I can't stop being sad for you...
I never tried to have a job about art. I always supposed I wasn't enough good for that. You were brave to try!

Heh that's one way of looking at it. If I want the job I want (special effects, aka make s**t move) then I gotta move to America, that's where all the big studios are. And either give puppydog eyes or have an affair with someone high up, you know, the usual tactics. I was thinking about it then I saw an episode of Ricki Lake and thought 'fiddlesticks to that'. That's not a slander against Americans, it's a slander against one American, I thought 'I don't want to share a landmass with you!' She was an angry woman who was slapping her son around saying "If I say you ain't gay then you ain't gay, you hear me?"

..um, change of topic

I do actually want to move there because of the fact that the books are cheaper and also we're stuck in the middle of a honking great DEPRESSION. And they just have cooler stuff over there, even if they do drive on the wrong side of the road

Thank you. Ah no. I tried in vain a few times, but it didn't work. I realised when I wanted to draw a picture for my sister's birthday and the pencil kept going to the left of where I wanted it to go. However, I can still manipulate MSPaint. That takes more brainpower than dexterity. Watch out world..

That's awful, about your hand.  You had such talent!  :'(

But at least I'm glad to hear that you can still work in MS paint!  I saw a few of your MS paint creations on DeviantArt, and they're every bit as amazing as your hand-drawn works.

Do you go pixel-by-pixel, the way I do my sprites, or do you have your own method of doing that?  If you do that anything like the way I do my sprites, those must have taken soooo long!  They're amazing!

And if you have your own method, I want to learn it, please!  You should post a tutorial or something.

And the Artpad pictures are amazing, too!  Can you still use Artpad with your broken hand?

Oh, strange O_o
I can draw with a pencil but always had problems to draw on computer... I'm absolutely bad for that! >_< What is your secret?

Post by: Thea on October 05, 2009, 09:52:18 AM
Haha, thanks, I could make a tutorial I guess. My method is, um..I'm not very good at explaining it so I'll post some progress pictures and close ups. It is mental. I spend months on these things. I could probably manage artpad, it's not a bad program for something that's free.

To shade them I do hundreds of tiny layers, each layer carying in colour juuuust slightly. When I did Scar, I did a glow around him. It needed about 17 layers, each one took me 45 minutes to do. Another time my forearm swelled up cos I spent so long on a picture. Oy

Actually, I have made videos showing how they were made, I was thinking of uploading them to youtube. Hang on a sec I'll do that, is much easier

. . . That's the sort of thing that impatient sprite-artists like me can only aspire to.  I mean, geez, if I tried to do something like that, it would take me years, not months.  You are amazing!

How the heck is it that, on DeviantArt, you've been complimenting my work?
Title: Re: A coupla Andalite doodles
Post by: Dameg on October 05, 2009, 11:24:57 AM
Yeah, it's also why I can't: I'm too impatient T_T I can't work on a drawing more than... 1 hour ^^'

You folks had best be careful, my ego will get so big I'll fall over, hah!

I do think that the Animorphs smilies are better than anything I've ever done, because it takes a particular mindset to make a smiley. Firstly, you've got to be able to create a recognisable image with like, only about 20 pixels or something, which is really dead hard. And then you've got to repeat the same action, over and over and over again just changing the image a leetle bit so that it resembles an animation. It must take ages to make each individual frame. I know for sure I couldn't make those smilies, and they are also possibly my most favourite bit of Animorphs fanart I've ever seen.

Firstly, you've got to be able to create a recognisable image with like, only about 20 pixels or something, which is really dead hard.

Not true.  I've tried to do large images on MS paint before, and that's what's hard.  Making a recognizeable image with only a few pixels is sooo much easier than you think, simply because the human brain has such a strong tendency to 'fill in the gaps.'  Meaning that you can draw something that is really not detailed at all, and people will think it's really detailed, because their brains just can't figure out that it's actually not.

And then you've got to repeat the same action, over and over and over again just changing the image a leetle bit so that it resembles an animation. It must take ages to make each individual frame.

And that is what copy and paste is for.  ;D

Don't get me wrong.  I am honored that you think so highly of me.  I just think that, if you knew the truth about how I do what I do, you'd feel rather silly.

Haha, this is kind of amusing, we both think that what we do is easy and what the other person does is really hard. Shows a lot about the differences between brains, I reckon. Either way, we got the Animorphs fanart both big and small covered

Aw cool, I like those, I like the seal best, I recognised her. She has something of mine..

I can't choose! Well okay maybe if forced, I actually think that the Yeerk smiley is my favourite. Because it's the most simple and you can't tell it's moving at first and for some insane reason I find the idea of a tiny doom slug going sqllch sqllch sqllch along the ground really really funny. I need help

I found this, it's not Animorphs related but it's, ah, a blue thing that doesn't understand humans? It's Kimahri Ronso from FFX. This one took me so long it starts to go funny at the end. If you can stomach watching the whole thing you're very brave

I unearthed a few more things on the ol' comp

I drew this on paper ages ago, and ruined it when I coloured it in. I took a snap first though, but couldn't colour it on the computer either. I've always wanted to see it finished, so if anyone wants to colour it, please do so!
