Title: K.A. Applegate
Post by: super_sonic on June 24, 2009, 12:49:01 PM
I have been reading Animorphs for years now, and I was thinking recently, "Whatever man wrote these books must be one hell of an intelligent guy." However, something has been nagging at me lately, since on the books, the author's real name is never shown, just "K.A. Applegate" and I have a nagging suspicion that "K.A. Applegate" is NOT a man...

Does anyone know the identity of this K.A. Applegate?

HER name is Katherine. I was a bit confused while I was reading the series as well. But I eventually found out her first name.

She's a woman man, a mother even.
I don't recall any postings on sites about being a tranny, but...yeah nevermind, I'm saying definitely not a tranny ::)

So what's the problem here? Just to keep the thread going, could you explain yourself better? Which books do you plan on burning/never reading again?

Come on. Spill. ;D

So when you thought KA was a man, the books were well written. But now that you find out that a woman can write a book well, you don't want it?

I like the Harry Potter books even though I know a woman wrote them (but I dont know her official name, just that its "J.K. Rowling")

Then I just don't understand how the sex of the author matters?

One thing to note is that after book 20, most of the books were ghostwritten. So it's possible that some later books were written by men. Thruthfully, KA only wrote about half of those books, at the most. Though she says she looked over the ghostwritten books, I'm unsure just how much.

Come on guys, don't feed the troll.

I seriously hope that he's a troll. I know that it's a formal thing for an author to use their first and middle name as initials for themselves, but it's a shame that some female authors out there have resorted to using this as a way to cover up their gender (to avoid exactly this type of reaction), just because it's considered more marketable to the opposite sex.

Also, just to clear things up, Katherine wrote and created the Animorph books alongside with her husband Michael Reynolds (also known as Michael Grant now for his 'Gone' series). K.A. got the author credit, while Michael got the books dedicated to him (I guess it was an inside joke as there supposedly wasn't enough space on the spine or something), but both were very much part of the series. Also, the ghostwritten books were always looked over before being published. If K.A. felt that the characters were acting too out-of-character, or if the plot deviated too much from what she wanted to get across, then she would rewrite it (a good example of this would be #28, where she completely re-wrote the ending scene of the book.)

Did she really? I had no clue....

You know, for some reason, that makes me feel alot better about the series...
