Title: tag tips
Post by: goom on May 18, 2009, 01:55:23 AM
i was talking to ash in google chat earlier, she wanted to know how to make your url say specific text.
here's for anybody who doesn't know yet.

custom URLs
take your url (let's say http://www.google.com)
paste it into RAF
highlight it and press the url button (you should get something like this [url ]http://www.google.com[/url])
now, change it to this [url =http://www.google.com]your custom text here[/url]
viola! (http://www.google.com)

also, you may have noticed that i posted [url ]http://www.google.com[/url] (and kept it from formatting into a hyperlink without code)
to achieve this effect, just make a space after [url ] and resize it to 1.
Code: [Select]
[url[size=1pt] [/size]][/url]

font
if you want to use a specific font, just type [font =font]text[/font]
you can find a list of forum-safe fonts here (http://www.angelfire.com/fl5/html-tutorial/fontlist.htm) or here (http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html).
Comic sans ms, Courier, Times New Roman

color
you probably all know how to color text (click the 'change color' option) to one of the listed.
but did you know you can turn font into ANY color?
an easy way is to type the name of the color in here [color= color][/color]
a list of forum-accepted colors can be found on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_colors#X11_color_names).
IndianRed, SlateBlue, Goldenrod
13DF3C, BD6F0F, 1FDECE

custom spoilers
just insert =text after the word 'spoiler' [spoiler =text][/spoiler]
[spoiler=text]just like this[/spoiler]

resized images
take your image (let's do hobbes http://i16.tinypic.com/118zv4w.jpg)
type in your ideal width and height[img width=# height=#]http://i16.tinypic.com/118zv4w.jpg[/img]
inputting just one will automatically stretch the other proportionally.

(http://i16.tinypic.com/118zv4w.jpg) (http://i16.tinypic.com/118zv4w.jpg) (http://i16.tinypic.com/118zv4w.jpg)

view text on mouseover
[abbr =mousover]display text[/abbr]
display text

thanks to a new SMF mod recently added to the forum, editing the last post in a thread will now effectively 'bump' the topic.

Just wondering, if we really like some emoticon/smiley from another chat platform, would you consider making it an RAF Smiley? Like the :dull: one you did?

And thank you, all those tips were really helpful.

*bump* updated the [img] code.
apparently, you don't need to specify both the width and height.
inputting one will automatically stretch the other proportionally.

searches
this was recently brought to my attention, do i thought i'd share it here.
a member was wondering why their search wasn't showing up correctly.

remember: the section of the forum you are currently on determines the search results.

you could always use the advanced search feature. (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/Themes/default/images/filter.gif) (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?action=search;advanced)

custom characters
there's a whole variety of symbols available to you that aren't directly accessible on the keyboard.
the best way to browse through them is by:

note: not all symbols will work on all sites. some will show up as ? here.

«®¶™

edit: figured i might as well include this.

How do you get the avatar pic up? I mean i read the dierctions but i still don't it.

you have 3 choices on how you want to upload your avatar:

click to expand

.bmp's are evil. don't use them. (large file size, while superior alternatives are available.)

how to link to a message.

either click (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/Themes/default/images/post/xx.gif) or Re:thread name

you should get #msg attached to the end of your address bar.
copy and paste this to link directly to a message on a thread..

bump :bump:

here's a list (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=57) of all the fancy codes and their parameters.

edit: a few days ago a member asked me if there was a way to save sent PMs by default.
indeed there is. go to your profile (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?action=profile), click Personal Message Options, and then check 'Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default'.

voila!

remember, you've still got the inbox space to worry about. (that is, unless you donate (http://animorphsforum.com/donate/) ;))

*bump!*

estrid was asking me a question earlier, so i figured i'd answer it in here.
"how would i be able to view all my posts in a certain thread"?

simple as this:

[spoiler](http://i42.tinypic.com/10mr12g.jpg)[/spoiler]

under search for: just type the thread's name
user: would be your current username.

then tick 'view results as messages'

enjoy! :goom:

fixing, wasn't quite working as i hoped.

notifications

you may very well know that you can subscribe a topic by clicking 'NOTIFY'.

however, did you know that you can also watch a board for new threads?
clicking 'NOTIFY' while viewing a board will do just that.

to edit subscriptions and settings, go to profile > notifications and email.

edit: feel free to ask questions.

since Show unread posts since last visit. (http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?action=unread) resets if you leave, and Show new replies to your posts. (http://Show new replies to your posts.) only takes effect if you've already posted in a thread, a good option is to try All unread topics.

you can access this at the bottom right after clicking Show unread posts since last visit. (http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?action=unread)

what are you typing in? i don't think you can 'search by user' with the quick search.
try going to advanced mode with 'by user:' and 'Show results as messages'

if you'd like to change the chat colors etc. try this out. first off, you'll need the addon firebug (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firebug/) (for firefox). download this and restart your browser.

after logging in, open up the chat (http://chat.animorphsforum.com/blab.php (http://chat.animorphsforum.com/blab.php)).
click on the bug icon in the corner of your browser (see: attached) to access the firebox panel. clicking the red - will hide it.

in the panel that comes up, click on 'css' and then click on 'blab.php'. you'll want to change this to 'style.css'.
at the very top you'll see the following lines of code:

Code: [Select]
body {
    background-color: #395871;
    color: #FFFFFF;
    margin: auto;
    padding: 0;
}

click on #395871 (the default blue) to replace the color with another -you can use plain hex (http://html-color-codes.com/) or try some of the web color names (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_colors#X11_color_names) (e.g. Salmon, PaleGreen).

if you'd like to, you can also change the name colors. click on #FFFFFF and try a few out! you can experiment throughout the page with other elements, too.
feel free to tell me if you need help. :goom:
