Title: RAFchat.
Post by: Coal Kropotkin on April 25, 2009, 02:12:15 PM
As of late there seems to be quite a bit of lag in chat. More than normal.
I was wondering if Richard would ever consider using userplane to host RAFchat.
It's a great chat server, not to mention it has Video+sound.
I love RAFchat. Honestly I feel oddly patriotic to it.
I would never have used RAF if not for the chat.
But, like the blog said. People seem to not be using it anymore. Well, that could be the lag. Or the fact that we use skype for video+voice. Well, userplane tends to have very little lag, and a great video+voice set up. You can prevent people from seeing. Or broadcast to anyone in the room. It allows individual users to make there own rooms. (Or of course Richard could ax this feature)
It allows private chat windows. It has individual fonts. (I will REALLYREALLYREALLY miss my font :()
It's a kind of staple for me. Almost every site I've ever used has used userplane.
I just think that it would help with more people using it. And it's free as far as I know, so to see if people liked it. You could have both options for right now. If people didn't like it get rid of it. If they do... I'll miss RAFchat more than most if it ever does go.

Well, those are just my thoughts.
I hope you consider it, Richard. :)

Thanks,

~Cody/Broken

I second that motion, anything other than what's used now. I don't use RAFchat because of the lag

I like the idea!! i just don't know if it will work for Richard, because it might not have the ability to tell how many people are online. (like at the bottom of this page)
Title: Re: RAFchat.
Post by: Coal Kropotkin on April 26, 2009, 12:49:04 PM
I'm not sure if it would allow that feature. But, it does tell you how many people are in the room. And exactly who they are. It also allows for actual profile. Which is really cool. Just a little bio and a picture, though. My main reason for wanting it for RAF is the lag issue. And the Video chat! *WANTS the video chat!!!*
But, honestly. Wouldn't losing that little link at the bottom of the page, be a small price to pay for a much better chat server?
Also, the cosmetics... They take some getting used to. It's not the lovely blue that we're used to. It's a bright white. Not Toooo Bright. But, still a bright white. Which means sometimes it's easy to get posts confused ect. But, honestly I think the pro's out way the con's here.
Not to mention with the multiple room feature Chat would hardly ever be crowded. Pleasantly full if things go the way I think they will. but never crowded.

Has the chat always been laggy, or is this something new?
Title: Re: RAFchat.
Post by: adamjared on April 26, 2009, 03:03:07 PM
It's been happening for the last couple of weeks at least. But it's been more in the recent couple of days.

It looks like the server software to me.

ICMP pings to chat.animorphsforum .com 26 Apr 4:43 p EDT

24 packets transmitted, 24 received, 0% packet loss, time 23035ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 70.548/74.551/99.445/6.021 ms

But, at the same time, the chat app claims about 250 ms lag.  If there are more than three or four people online, that statistic ends up longer than a second.  (In the app; I haven't ICMP pinged the server when it's busy.)

When loaded, it will occasionally stop responding for tens of seconds at a time.  Also, it appears that people are leaving and entering quickly.

Hope this info helps.

Yeah... I'm thinking HG server slow-down. I'll just move it over to XEhost for a few days and see if there's a reduction in the lag.

My window ALWAYS gets stuck!!!!! ITS SO ANNOYING. What it says when i scroll over that movey bar thing is:  XMLHTTPRequest sent. Waiting for response... Click here to reload. FOREVER. And when i click to reload, it'll work for the first 3 times that it says that, and then it craps out completely, making me have to close every IE window i have open, in order to restart the program. This has happened for about 3 weeks now.

I really think userplane would be a great option. *Is slightly biased... And REALLY wants the video chat feature*
Userplane has so many more options. And the lag is nearly non-existent from any time I've seen. And no, Russell it isn't expensive. Anything I've read says userplane is free. ... I don't know if Richard has some form of locked in agreement with the current chatserver, though.

HOLY CRAPAZOIDSZ!

Hopefully will be back up soon.

Some odd file transfers happened, and now the entire structure of the CHAT is corrupted.

Hopefully our hosts have a backup copy, because I compromised all of mine.

rarely enough people are ever on to need another.

GESB stands for Galaxy's Edge Space Bar, and the purpose would be for them to communicate like they used to, back on Kimerree's AniChat.

Oh, cool. Otherwise, there'd be so many randomly titled rooms. *whew*

I can see the bene's of a RP room, you know, letting people know that if you enter this room, be sure to be in character.

that'd be pretty sweet.

What is that, like another RP room, but like a battle royale room? That's kinda odd.

Kimm's is dead and gone, and we're all here now. I'm okay with that. But, it would be cool. :)

Richard, sorry to complain, but RAFchat has gotten unbearable. Maybe it's just my connection, but it is just lagging interminably every time I go in. I have to refresh at least every 5-10 minutes, but often several times in a minute. Currently, it has been trying to load for 5 minutes.

EDIT: Sorry for resurrecting another necroed thread, haha. I saw your response to Scott. Thanks, Richard.

If a RP chat room for the GESB is possible, I would support it because I think that would be really cool to have the Bar in 'Real Time'

*waves* Halloo... just a suggestion to the folks who want additional dedicated chatrooms in the RAFchat... why not just start your own free Chatzy room? They can only be reached by people who have the specific link and password, so it's secure, and they can be 'cleared' (erased) for further privacy, if it's wanted. It also limits the additional burden on RAFfinances that might be incurred by extra chatrooms.

Honestly, I've kinda' wondered for a long time why RAF hasn't dropped RAFchat and just shifted completely to a free service or else said "get on Skype or Gmail or Digsby; we're all in there somewhere."  As far as I'm aware, there are incredibly few RAFians who don't have some alternative method to instant message other RAFians.

Eh. Just my $0.02.

I'm pretty sure the point of the name is to keep it open for all RPGs, not just GESB.

What it will do is it will stop letting us send tells, then if you refresh it says it timed out. And one the forum where it normal tall you how many are online, it either says nothing, or has a tan box
