THE FACULTY RIPPED OFF ANIMORPHS DAMMIT.
There, I'm sorry, but thats been building up for years and no one really understands what I'm talking about.
-
I hate to say it...but I'm going to have to be included in that number of people who don't know what you're talking about...What's the Faculty?
-
What is The Faculty, and how do you think they ripped Animorphs off? Explanations help people understand better.
-
It was a movie:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Faculty
"The Faculty is about a fictional high school, Herrington High School (said to be located somewhere 'in the middle of Ohio'), at which the faculty and staff become taken over by alien parasites. In turn, the faculty then infects the students with the organism."
Basically, parasitic slug-like creatures invade, take over your brain, and control you.
-
actually the idea of a secret alien invasion of slugs was around long before The faculty or Animorphs. (Invasion of the Body Snatchers for one) So technically animorphs stole the idea haha
-
I've seen that movie, and I think it's actually meant to be a sort-of sequel to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Although I did think the exact same thing as you when I first read the description of it.
-
dude! i actually saw this movie on my friends TV one night and it was totally just like Animorphs!
I actually thought it was a cool movie, ive never seen invasion of the body snatchers so animorphs was original to me.
-
Invasion of the Body Snatchers was a fairly old thing for kids to remember when Animorphs was first coming out, so I thought Animorphs was all original too at the beginning. I still don't mind that it's not. Animorphs was original in the sense it combined several elements to make something new for itself, which is what I think made it work and stand out.
-
ZOMG, Animurfs ripd off lots of 50's sci-fiz tewz!
-
Don't forget the '60s, and by proxy the '70s. Let's face it, have you ever seen an Andorian? Like one whose antenna doesn't break off...Ala "Journey to Babel".
-
OMG I remember seeing The Faculty in the movie theaters a long time ago and the whole time I was totally thinking "Yeerks!!!" :o LMAO
-
It's nothing LIKE Animorphs, aside from the "alien possession/infestation" thing, which has been used in like a gazillion sci-fi things in the last hundred years.
-
for sho, think Stargate...the Goa'uld...
-
...Stargate is still recent, and b-quality, and rips off a billion other things.
-
This movie was cool ^_^ I still watch it sometimes... too funny!
And yes, I also thought about Yeerks, as I did with Stargate... But they're right: this idea about invasion is quite old. ^_^
-
but I still like to think Animorphs was original...hahahaha . I think the Yeerks are actually pretty unique.
-
*headdesk*
-
Yes! Got him! hahaha
-
Lol...trying to give Xeno a headache now are we? (And I mean that comment good-naturedly btw)
-
I think Animorphs is pretty original. I mean, a lot of the ideas have been used before, but good luck trying to find something completely new. Its not like there weren't witches before Harry Potter or the notions of space travel before Star Wars. Theres a definite give and take, and all things considered, the concept really hasn't been used before. Pseudo random kids fighting a very mature alien invasion by turning into animals?
-
yeah...i was trying to give xeno a headache. It might help with his migraine he's accumulating...
-
Ah...well that makes sense lol
-
yes yes. I've been testing the theory for months on Slushie Man. he turned out pretty good.
haha , jay kay.
-
Argh. *breaks stuff, walks around staring at people in fury*
*breaks some more stuff*
They weren't original so much as effective. The series took a bunch from 50's sci-fi movies, mixed it with some 90's sarcastic pop-culture references, and threw it all into a plausible real-world setting.
You're right, I don't think the turning-into-animals idea had been used before, though, certainly not in a mainstream series.
Where Animorphs succeeded wasn't so much in originality though (despite the Andalites, and the morphing itself, etc, being pretty fresh), it was more about having the guts to not talk down to its audience.
-
Aw, we all luv ya Xeno...don't sweat it lol
And yeah, you definitely got a point there. The whole general concept of alien 'body snatchers' invading Earth has been around for quite awhile, but Animorphs just put some fairly fresh ideas into it which gave it an original twist and therefore made it different and in it's own way...unique.
-
yeah. some of the alien concepts were new too.
Turning into animals was new. I think using young teens in a massive war like the one in Animorphs was a gutsy move though.
-
Your face is a gutsy move. *pouts*
-
gosh, xenomorph...you're everywhere...as in, in all the threads. hahaha
-
Omnipotence. Just call me Toomellimistayak.
-
Ellimistiyak. haha
-
Hey Xeno, don't be insulting my RAF man like that! Lol...good one, Toomellimistayak :P
-
*seethes, grinds teeth*
So incredibly frustrating.
-
thanks. *high fives Yrkd88*
-
Because we know it'll happen: :sign18:
-
oops....sry, now I don't even know what the topic is!
-
thanks. *high fives Yrkd88*
You're welcome hun *hugs* after all a woman needs to stand by her man right? lol ;)
-
Behind every good man is a good woman.
...and also the bad men, too. hahahaha.
-
Well, someone's gotta straighten out those bad ones! 8)
-
thanks. but you're too good for them. haha
-

Also Robert Heinlein's "The Puppet Masters" in which slug like parasites ride on people's backs and control their brains.
