Title: New Here
Post by: Ouroboros on November 12, 2011, 05:14:35 PM
Hey guys and gals, how's it going today?

I'm Ouroboros, and I loooove me some Animorphs. My favorite character is definitely Ax, since his fascination with having a mouth and talking with it is fantastic and always makes me smile.

I'm a college senior right now, majoring in English, with concentrations in medieval lit, modernism/postmodernism, and linguistics/grammar. I am also double minoring in classical philosophy and history (from ancient history until about the 17th century). It seems like a lot, but it really isn't so bad. My professors fortunately take it somewhat easy on us, and there is really no homework outside of reading and writing papers.

As far as interests go, I have a few. I love to read, I like to go hiking and spend time outside (I'm an Eagle Scout and an Assistant Scoutmaster in the greatest troop ever), I like to play a lot of video games (mostly handheld, I like to be able to play for short bursts throughout the day), I read a ton of comic books, I play D&D or similar RPGs every Friday night, and my friends and I play a ton of games, everything from Scrabble to Magic: the Gathering to Risk to Warhammer 40k. I like to watch baseball and hockey, and I don't watch much else on TV besides Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and COPS (my guilty pleasure haha).

I've been seeing this forum for a while now, kinda popping up in my bookmarks (I've been meaning to join for a long time) but a few days ago I decided to do it. Hopefully with all that stuff up there I can find people to talk with, and I'm looking forward to it.

PS

If anybody wants to strike up a random conversation (I'm nice, I promise!), I'll be stuck in front of the computer all day writing a paper.

<DinosaurNothlit here!  Hi, Ouroboros!  You sound like a pretty cool person.  I'm also a fan of Ax (second only to Tobias), and I like to play D&D a lot too.  Anyway, welcome to RAF!  I hope you like it here!>

Nice to meet you all!

@DinosaurNothlit: What edition of D&D do you play? Do you play any other pen & paper RPGs?

@goom: Yes, I do have a skype account, but unfortunately my mic/camera are a complete bust. I hope to remedy that soon, but in the meantime...as long as you folks don't mind my text chatting it's all good.

<Well, to be honest, when I used the present tense of 'play,' I was slightly lying.  I haven't actually had a group to play with for quite some time now.  However, I've played D&D 3.0, as well as some GURPS (the one I've played was 2.0, I think, but the books I actually own are for 3.0) and Hero System (no idea which version it was).  I've been planning to eventually one day maybe start up a GURPS-style roleplay here on RAF, if I ever get the time and motivation to GM such a thing.>

Aww, that's sad :(

Honestly, I was really let down by 4th edition, and I'm a big fan of 3rd/3.5. My real love is AD&D 2E. I'm running a campaign right now in 2E that has been running without a significant break for about 3 years now. I mean, I know people hate on THAC0, but...it's so good. Haha.

Hero System is crazy, how long ago was it that you played? That may be a good indicator of what edition it was (if I am correct it's up to 6th edition).

What sort of GURPS-y thing are you thinking about? I don't have too much experience running GURPS, but I have played it a decent bit. Granted, we played GURPS 3rd edition (which is an edition behind now) so I don't know a lot about the current state of GURPS.

Was it 3.5 or 4 where they started introducing those elemental sprite things as a playable race?  I seem to recall that they did something to Druids that I didn't like in whatever edition that was.  (Heh, I am so knowledgeable on all the D&D happenings.  ^-^)

Let's see, it would have been . . . a year ago that I played Hero System?  Year and a half maybe?  Now that I'm thinking about it, it seems like it was edition 5.  Something in my brain is associating "Hero System" with the number 5, anyhow.  It's a pretty nifty system, probably my second-favorite after GURPS (and that could be just because GURPS is the one I'm most familiar with).

Well, what I had in mind, as far as GURPS-y things go, was to roleplay sort of an intersection between different fictional universes, so that people could play whatever they wanted (versatility is the beauty of GURPS, after all).  I've got a plot summary typed up somewhere, but the jist of it is that the various planes of the multiverse intersect in various places that nobody really notices most of the time.  Ever wonder where your socks go when you lose them in the dryer?  That's the basic idea.  BTW, you probably know about as much about the current state of GURPS as I do, I don't know anything about 4th edition either.

@goom That's awesome. I'll definitely check it out. EDIT: I can't access that link you left me :(

@DinosaurNothlit: Well, like the Tieflings and stuff? They were "playable" in 3/3.5 (in special settings like Forgotten Realms and Faerun, and a few splatbooks had stats for them to be used as PCs), but not a standard race. That was 4th. Not sure about the druids. I didn't play or run 4th long enough to get to druids :)

It could very well have been 5th edition Hero System. I dunno, I'm not really well-versed in that one, and the books I have for it are 2nd and 3rd edition so it's obviously been a little while. I have a friend who is waaaaaay into Hero System, I'll ask him next time we talk.

So you're thinking like a Rifts type of setting, only GURPS instead of Palladium? That's cool. I like the idea of it being a sort of subtle take on different planes. Are you looking to actually run it as GURPS or just use it as the basis?

If you are looking for a cool universal type system that isn't GURPS, I would recommend Unisystem (they do the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG as well as All Flesh Must Be Eaten, a supercool zombie RPG) or the Cortex System (they do the Firefly RPG). They're all really excellent, just in different ways.

Well, Tieflings weren't specifically what I was thinking of, but now that you mention it I think they may have been part of that same update, so hey whatever.  As for the druids, I've always paid attention to them in particular because they were always my favorite class (the fact that they can, at higher levels, take DINOSAURS as their animal companions may have something to do with that).

Actually, I'm pretty happy with GURPS.  As I mentioned before, I have the basic set of source books for 3.0, so to use any other system I'd have to get all different books and learn the new system, and I'm plenty happy enough with GURPS right now that I don't feel the need to do any of that.

@Kit Cloudkicker: I'm glad to finally have joined up! Thanks :)

@DinosaurNothlit: Druids are way cool, no doubt about it...I had a guy play a super crazy shapeshifting druid in one of my campaigns...easily one of the most memorable characters from the game. I was a big fan of the animal companions and different wild shapes that the druids had access to with certain feats and stuff...I mean who wouldn't want to turn into a treant? Do you know what they did to druids in 4e? I have the core set for 4e but I have to admit I didn't look through it very much.

Do you have any of the 3rd edition GURPS splatbooks or just the core set? If so, which ones? I'm always curious about supplements. I've got a handful of supplements for GURPS, but they're mostly specific to a campaign i was playing in/running (GURPS Supers, GURPS Martial Arts, stuff like that). I don't think I even have the full core set anymore, just the basic rulebook. GURPS is awesome, but my group right now is really far into D&D and the Warhammer 40k roleplaying system, we've been playing Deathwatch and Rogue Trader off and on whenever our full group can't make it.

It's nice to have someone outside of my normal gaming group to talk to about all this stuff :) most of my classmates and other people I interact with on a semi-daily basis have no idea what I'm talking about, and I've given a lot of big RPG forums a shot, but it's just too much to keep up with.

Goom linked you to a thread where all the RAFians posted their Skype user-names. He's compiled a list on the first page. You can add any of us (I'm blast.ash) and we'll add you to the RAFSkype group where we all chat (mostly text - like Goom mentioned, we make smaller groups for those who want to voice chat.)

Welcome to RAF, Ouro. It's always nice to sneak another English major in here. Despite being a forum for book lovers, it gets lonely from time to time!

I'm Terenia, or Teach, or Jessi. I answer to all that and more, so long as it isn't too mean. :P If you need any help with anything please feel free to ask me so that I can polish my shiny little Jr. Staff icon - especially if you have any questions about the RPG boards (where I'm most active). If I can't answer your question one of our other fantastic staff members certainly can.

Welcome aboard!

For the life of me I can't remember what it was they actually did to the druids that made me so mad at the time.  I dunno, maybe I was just in a bad mood that day or something.  I just remember thinking that they'd taken away what made druids, druids.

Do you have any of the 3rd edition GURPS splatbooks or just the core set? If so, which ones? I'm always curious about supplements. I own only the GURPS core books, but I've read several of the splatbooks too.  They're interesting, but they don't really add much to the core rule-set, so I've never really felt the need to purchase any of them.

@Terenia: Yeah, I understand the loneliness...all of my friends are either engineering or chemistry majors. There's very few people I can talk to about books and stuff. I've never tried my hand at online RP, except for a few PbP D&D games a few years ago.

@DinosaurNothlit: 4th edition took away a lot, I feel. I wasn't very impressed with it. I love my GURPS splatbooks. More for the character and campaign ideas than the actual new mechanics.

I never said I didn't love the splatbooks, too.  Especially the one about genetic engineering, that one was downright fascinating.  But as far as character and campaign ideas go, I've just never had too much trouble inventing such things on my own, you know?  Thus why I buy mostly rulebooks, because while I might read splatbooks once or twice for inspiration, it's the rulebooks that I really need to refer to again and again.

I generally don't have an issue thinking of ideas, but sometimes those books gets me out of a bind. Are you talking about the Biotech book? I have that one. It's one of my favorites, easily.

Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Ouroboros on November 15, 2011, 01:27:10 AM
Thanks!

Honestly, I'm not sure why anyone would do that...but to be fair one of them is a chemistry/secondary ed major, he wants to teach chemistry in high school/junior high. The other two I'm not so sure about. It probably has to do with being able to blow stuff up in lab.

Then there's the weird one who is in biochemistry. He used to work on bioweapons in the military (deactivating or neutralizing them, not making them), so it's something he discovered he liked doing. I guess that works out for him.

I'm the odd one out in my circle of friends, as far as academics goes (3 chemistry majors, a biochemistry major, an aerospace engineering major, a civil engineer, and me). They like microscopes or schematics while I like literature, but it works out pretty well. We have plenty of stuff to talk about besides school.

Cool :)  I was a biology major as an undergrad, hence the vile hatred of chemistry, but I surround myself with lots of types.  Mostly the nerdy variety, regardless of academic interests, heheh.

Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Ouroboros on November 15, 2011, 01:42:03 AM
I try to have a lot of friends that are into a lot of things, but out of all the people that come and go, the core group hasn't changed in about 10 years.

In school I only really see the same dozen or so people, and they're all into a lot of the same stuff I am. At this point in school it's difficult for me to meet people and make it stick since my classes are so specialized and I'm done with all the core requirements and electives. I also don't spend a lot of time just hanging out at school since I usually have a lot of papers to write.

I'm also out of work right now, so that cuts another avenue for meeting people out.

How did the biology major go? I've always been interested in it, but I can't think in diagrams and charts very easily, so cell structures and the like get completely lost on me. I barely scraped by in my last biology class because my professor really really like electron transport chains and stuff like that...and genetics. All that went right over my head no matter how I tried to study it, but I was able to pass at least.
Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Myitt on November 15, 2011, 01:52:48 AM
Well, I'm a paleontologist, so while I liked the cell biology I've always been a much bigger fan of organismal stuff.  Honestly though, once I'm done with grad school, I'm really interested in teaching biology in high school.  Mostly so I can plug as much nerdy animal/plant bio as possible...haha.  I guess the electron transport chain is okay, too.  *sulk*
Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Ouroboros on November 15, 2011, 02:08:12 AM
Paleontologist, huh? That's flippin' awesome! I guess the avatar should have hinted towards that, but I'm slow tonight.

How much longer do you have in grad school? Are you going for your master's or doctorate?

I've been filling out a storm of grad school applications recently, hopefully I can find a place that has a good program for me. I'm hoping to go straight through to the doctorate and teach at the college level. All of my professors said I'd be good at it, and I really enjoy talking about stuff at great lengths in front of people. I'm just not sure if I'd be able to handle high school. I was minoring in secondary ed a few semesters ago, but after observations and stuff I realized I probably wouldn't enjoy it so I dropped it from my degree.

I had a biology teacher in high school who was incredible. He was the adviser for the sci-fi club I started there, and he used to drop all kinds of jokes and references in class. What sort of nerdy animal/plant bio do you mean? Granted, I probably won't get half of it, I'm just curious.
Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Myitt on November 15, 2011, 02:17:20 AM
I basically want to be your high school biology teacher, sci-fi club included :P

If you're interested in secondary school ed we have a couple of teachers here at RAF, including the fabulous Jess (Kit Cloudkicker) and my girlfriend Jessi (Terenia/Teach).  Even if you're sure it's not for you, feel free to bounce questions off of them.  If you really like teaching and want to do it at the college level, just keep in mind you'll also be expected to do research and grant-writing as well as advise students.  You probably already knew all of that, but if teaching is your thing, many universities involve lots more than just teaching.  Granted, there are plenty of colleges and universities that value good teaching skills, and honestly it's an asset to be a good instructor as well as a good researcher.  I'd say it's even more important, except the people who fund tenure are going to be unfortunately looking at harder bottom lines than "is this professor actually good at instructing the next generation?" >.<

I'm trying to finish up my M.S. in museum and field studies, with an emphasis on vertebrate paleoecology.  Feel free to ask me anything about...well, anything, heh, but the grad school process can be ridonkulous and I'd be happy to help if I can.

Hm...as far as nerdy animal/plant bio goes...oh jeez.  Well I study the fossilized droppings of big, dead saurian carnivores, I have a bizarre memory for mammalian families (my last name sounds very similar to the Latin name for the rabbit family...), I think Euglena are adorable and I love nudibranchs.  Not just because they look kinda like Yeerks, I swear.  :P
Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Ouroboros on November 15, 2011, 02:31:27 AM
Well thanks for the tips!

I'm aware of what it all entails, and hopefully I won't change my mind about it (and can actually manage to pull it off :) ). I actually enjoy a lot of the research and whatnot, and I've been doing a lot of talking with my professors and the advisers at my school to make sure it's how I want to go about everything. I'm really interested in teaching and all that, but I'm about 98% sure I couldn't handle it at a high school level. I did alright with the education minor, I always got good grades on lesson delivery and stuff like that. It's all just at the point where I have to figure out where I want to go and actually get it set in motion. Everything sounds so much better in my head, haha. There's always just that tiny bit of doubt about my future lingering around, but I'm taking the steps I need to take and hopefully I'll make it work.

As far as paleontology and stuff, I'm sure I would have tons of questions, but I honestly don't know where to start or what to ask. It's always been kinda cool to me, and like most kids I loved dinosaurs, but I simply don't know enough about any of it to figure out where to start. If I think of anything to ask (it's inevitable) I'll make sure to let you know.

Teaching high school isn't all that bad. This is my fifth year teaching AP Language and Comp to 11th graders and I love the teaching part. Not a fan of the administrative crap, but every job has its own red tape and bs. My kids, though, are awesome and I get to blather on at great lengths about how the best way to get a girl is to learn how to utilize parallelism in your daily conversation.

And plug Animorphs, of course. XD
Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Ouroboros on November 15, 2011, 05:28:14 PM
I got into a classroom a few times and i just realized that the high school level just wasn't for me. I'm glad you found that it works for you, though...We really don't have enough good teachers.

I wrote a paper on parallelism for a rhetorical grammar course one time. I hated placing repetitive gerunds, writing artificial sentences, and making passable examples...haha.

Never helped me get a girl, as far as I can recall. I had to rely on my hair (girls love playing with long hair for some reason, I guess) and my collection of sappy poetry for that...

Though one girl went out with me because she saw my battered and beloved copy of Ginsberg's Howl and Other Poems sticking out of my back pocket in class. I guess it was finally good for something, after spending nearly 7 years in my pocket/backpack/car.

Yeah, I only like you for your parallelism, you know. :P

High school teaching definitely isn't for everyone. Then again, neither is middle school (omg terrifying) or elementary school (ewww, little kids. Snotty. Blargh) or....well most things, lol.

Honestly I've been casually looking for another job. I enjoy teaching quite a bit, but I also get bored if I stay in the same place for a long time. I hope you're able to find something to do with an English degree that suits you. :) I'm more of a rhetoric girl than a literature girl, personally. I enjoy some of the classics (especially British literature), but I really geek out over linguistic and grammatical structure more than anything. XD

I haven't met a lot of people who are into rhetoric and grammar. It's pretty interesting stuff and I really enjoy it.

Which British literature/classics do you like? That's a huge part of what I love and study.
Title: Re: New Here
Post by: Terenia on November 16, 2011, 08:38:03 AM
Brave New World is one of my all-time favorites, but what turned me on to British Literature was The Once and Future King and several Milton excerpts (I have yet to read the entirety of Paradise Lost, and I doubt I will ever have the time to, but what I have read I enjoy). I also absolutely love Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Or at least I did when I read it in 11th grade. :P In high school I enjoyed the old Arthurian legends, and also read a few excepts of Le Morte d'Arthur. Since then my interests have shifted towards more utopian/dystopian focuses.

Unfortunately, I can't say I've read (or remember) nearly as much as I would like. I graduated with my BA in 2007, and since then I haven't had enough free time to indulge in any reading beyond student essays. My literature background is incredibly rusty and I'm having far too much fun reading Martin and King right now to go back to the classics. :P

One of my last college courses in undergrad was a linguistics course and it totally sold me on rhetoric and dialectical shifts. I just think it's fascinating to see how language changes across time and regions. Especially when you look at idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms. It's just...fascinating. :) Pronunciation, too. Don't even get me started on a good accent. XD

Those are some of my favorites too - Milton mostly. I study Milton pretty intensely. I've read nearly everything he's written (except the stuff in languages I can't read) and he's one of my all time favorites. Have you ever heard of Stanley Fish? I'm sure you have, but he wrote a couple beautiful books on Paradise Lost. He covers all sorts of stuff, including Satan's rhetoric. They're wonderful, and I would definitely suggest them.

Coleridge is fantastic, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner is just amazing. He's not my favorite Romantic (that title is a toss-up between Keats, Byron, and Shelley [Percy, not Mary]) but he sure did some wicked good work.

I'm actually re-reading (and finishing what I didn't read) Le Morte d'Arthur right now (a character in a story I'm writing is really into Arthurian legend). It's still fascinating.

As far as dystopia/utopia type literature goes, Brave New World is always great, as are the other classics (1984, Fahrenheit 451, Lord of the Flies, etc.) but one of my favorites is Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. It's wonderful. I'm also a big fan of Takami's Battle Royale.

I got into that stuff in high school, but didn't really enjoy it much until I started studying older stuff (Moore's Utopia, Plato's Republic, Butler's Erewhon). Once I started reading and studying the roots I found a new appreciation for the utopia/dystopia.

I actually haven't heard of Stanley Fish. I'll look into him! If nothing else because of the awesome name he has. XD

I'm actually about....oh.....100 pages into The Handmaid's Tale right now....I put it on hiatus to read the Game of Thrones books, so I'm afraid it'll be awhile before I finish it, but I liked what I was reading before I got distracted. I'm a little ADD with my reading sometimes. I'm usually reading three to five books at once and eventually one or two win out over the rest.

Fish is awesome. He's a grumpy old man and a fascinating literary critic/theorist. The two Fish books I have that relate to Paradise Lost are Surprised by Sin: The Reader in Paradise Lost and How Milton Works. They're awesome.

The Handmaid's Tale is so good. The Scrabble scenes with Offred and Commander Fred are just brilliant. It's one of the few books I've read recently that actually made me feel something. I know that sounds bad, but I've fallen into the habit of reading books for everything BUT their emotional content and it really sucks. P

Hey I'm new here; obviously; I have loved Animorphs ever since I first started to read them since I was like 10 or 12. I love all the good guy characters but my favorites have got to be Rachel, Ax, Tobias and Marco. They are people I could totally get along with though I'd probably argue with Rachel as much as Marco; lol. I personally did not like the last book. Won't spoil it for anyone just in case someone never read the last book but I didn't like it at all.

I just realized that this entire thread passed me by somehow. Probably it's just me being none-too-observant lately... Finals are makin' me twitchy. :P

*clears throat*

Howdy!

There, you have now received your official Texan welcome. I've seen you around and made a few comments here and there, but I've never actually introduced myself. I'm Bear, in case ya hadn't guessed. :P You could call me Josh, but, well, most people just call me Bear around here.

Gotta give you props on the Scouting front there. I think we have one other fella here who's an Eagle Scout, but i can't remember who. Gotta ask... you still carry your card with you?

And I've also got to complain at you a bit for reawakening my pokemon nostalgia. I'm probably gonna get sucked into that over winter break. Shhh, don't tell my mom. >.< Btw, you know of a good website I can play it on my computer (or iPad, preferably...) from? What's a good emulator/rom source? All my old games are dead...

Well anyways, it's been nice seein' ya around. As Jessi said already, Welcome aboard!

Thanks!

Yeah, I do carry my Eagle card around with me. You'd be surprised how many places offer discounts and stuff to Eagle Scouts  :P

That and a lot of people don't believe that I could possibly be an Eagle Scout because of the way I look, but whatever.

I can help you get it set up on your computer, iPad I'm not so sure about. PM me if you'd like links to emulators and the like.

 :)

Way cool, what part of town are you in?

i live right by santa fe station. it's great being so close to the freeway because we just hop on and it's easy access outta town. we go off-roading and exploring in the desert almost every weekend.

whereabouts are you posted?

A ways from there. I live about halfway between Sunset Station and Green Valley Ranch. It's pretty much right in the middle of town. Anywhere I want to go - Mt. Charleston, Summerlin, Boulder City, anywhere really - is half an hour away, generally.

ah so you're closer to henderson. my friend's grandparent live near sunset, it was a pain to drive over there to hang out.

you ever go off-roading and play in the desert? we just got a new toy to play with, but it probably won't be ready until summer time...

Yeah, technically I live in Henderson. It's just easier to say Vegas because everybody knows Vegas. Even though I'm not in Vegas proper, I'm still about 10 minutes from the Strip and all that so I don't feel too bad for not saying Henderson. My grandparents live about 9 miles away from me and somewhere between my house and their house I cross the Henderson/Las Vegas border.

I go out in the desert every now and then to play around, yeah. I don't have any cool toys for that purpose (vehicle-wise), however, so I have to go out with my friends. I have a friend who lives on the south end of Boulder Highway, right at the edge of the desert, so there is that. He also lives about 15 minutes from the dry lakebed between where the 95 ends (going south) and Boulder City (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about) so that's always a fun place to go mess around.

yup, i know exactly where that dry lake bed is. i've driven past it but never drove on it. there's another dry lake bed if you go up the 95, past the mt. charleston exits and the golf course, there's a right turn to a wildlife range. the trail on the left is the old road to alamo, but it goes straight into the dry lake bed. the bad part is you can't go all the way to alamo unless you have sand tires because it's like talcum powder over there. the awesome part is that some of the lake bed that is accessible was once part of the bombing range, so there's little bits of wreckage lying around from back in the day worth checking out.

i don't actually have any toys like atvs or dirtbikes etc. the new toy i'm referring to is actually an old 4x4 '71 land cruiser that needs fixing up. usually we take either my '97 land cruiser or my dad's toyota tundra.
