When they all went to grab their families and run, Jake waited until last to rescue his. What if he didn't? How do you think the rest of the series might have gone if Jake rescued Tom and his parents first?
It was the best time to rescue Tom, since it was the last good chance he had of doing it.
Tom would have never run off with the morphing cube. The Blade Ship may not have been taken, since if Rachel was on the Pool Ship they probably would have gotten to the guns sooner.
So how much do you think the books after the families were gathered up would change if Jake rescued his family first?

If Tom had been saved, then Cassie would never have been in the position to give up the morphing cube, which means that they couldn't have made the deal with the Taxxons, which in turn could have completely changed the outcome of the war.

I think it was already too late when they made the decision to save their families. Tom and his parents had already left to "buy a lawn mower" at that point, so even if they went to Jake's house first no one would be there. They were already down in the Yeerk pool...

As soon as they knew about the yeerks knowing about humans, Jake's family should have been priority as well as Loren. Basically they should've divided their forces and rescued those two families separetely.

i agree, it always bugged me that they didn't split up.

Leaders family being captured=easy source of blackmail and crisis.

Except Tom's Yeerk didn't really do much with them besides agree to hand over Jake's family in exchange for a Bladeships. as opposed to sending out pictures of Jake's parent's beaten bodies and demanding surrender. Or something like that.

This is very Leibniz: Leibniz said that all these horrible things happen because we live in the best of all possible worlds and everything is part of some sort of big plan, of course Voltaire disagreed. Well if Jake's family had been freed then cassie wouldn't have given Tom the morphing cube, then the Taxxons wouldn't have rebelled etc etc.

Yeah, not giving the Yeerks the cube would have definitely improved the situation. And I'm not being sarcastic. If anyone is to be credited to the defeat of the Yeerks by giving morphing power to people they weren't supposed to, it's Elfangor. Not Cassie.

I guess that is the argument of other people: that everything Cassie did turned out for the best.

Yeah, but only through author manipulation. In universe, it would just be sheer luck. Personally, I think it turned out much better than it could have DESPITE Cassie handing over the cube. But that's just me.
