I worked it out on chapter...was it 12? When he says, "I would have an Andalite body!" or something like that. I just thought, "Visser Three. Nice touch." Just after Aldrea's family had meade friends with Dak Hamee. Good times.

First time around I was surprised. Mostly because I didn't know Visser Three's actual name at that point.
[shameless plug]I'm working the twin somewhere in my fanfiction series.[/shameless plug]

Around the time he started marveling at Andalite bodies, I started having my suspicions.
-
I always knew because I had read book 16 before that, and recalled the name "Esplin." Which leads me to this question: Has anyone noticed how Esplin sounds like Eslin, the Controller who helped Ax find Visser Three's feeding location?
-
Yeah, I knew from #16 as well.
Although I never noticed that the Yeerk who helped them was named Eslin... Probably because #8 wasn't really one of my favourites, so it doesn't get reread as often...
-
Captain Torelli also shares half a name with another character; Santorelli.
-
Sofor, the Andalite that teaches Elfangor how to tail fight, shares a name with Charles J. Sofor, "the deputy police chief in the capital." I can cite books and page numbers if you need me to.
-
Yes there are some similarities in names used in the series, but considering how long the series is that's not surprising. No author can be expected to remember every name they've ever used. Also, this is kind of off topic.
I suspected it once he became obsessed with acquiring an Andalite host, but it's been that long since I first read it that I don't really remember exactly.

I had read #16 fairly close to the time I read the HBC, so I remembered the name. Anyways, I just had a thought, which I know can't be true, but what if the Esplin narrating the HBC was Esplin the Lesser and not the one who would become Visser 3? For me this would explain V3's character decay. And I could easily imagine the twins having a conversation and Primary saying, "Great Idea! I'm using it! By the way, I'm going to make you suffer because I have no interest in sharing power."

I totally never thought of that! Cool idea though, I think I'm going to go and reread that now from his(visser 3/1) twin's perspective.
