Title: The Sharing stuff
Post by: Darth Zakryn on February 14, 2011, 06:34:11 PM
I had an idea today. What if The Sharing does rehabilitation programs? For example: A cop is a member of The Sharing, so is the judge and a lot of people. A guy keeps violating the law (like speeding or whatever) and the judge sentences him to some time in The Sharing, making them ripe for Controllers. Anyway, this idea is pretty vague, so just go with it. Anyone see anything like that happening?

I could definitely see that happening. They work within the community, including corrections. The deviant gets a Yeerk in his head, and soon enough he's acting like a contributing member of society. wow, that worked really well! Let's send other rebellious people to the Sharing! It's just too easy.

That's actually a good idea, definitely worth including in a fic. Even if law breakers weren't forced to attend The Sharing, they would have trouble finding a job and such. People with problems often ended up attending The Sharing out of desperation. Of course the Yeerks were more interested in acquiring useful or powerful hosts, but a host is a host.

I always wondered why K.A never had the Yeerks take advantage of religious groups to gain hosts. I mean, I understand why she avoided religion, but you'd think she would have at least mentioned the possibility of Yeerks doing this.

Probably because you can't mention religion without talking about religion.

Well it's not like she would have been sticking with one religion.

Doesn't matter when you've decided not to mention religion in your book series.

'Nuff 'bout religion. How about more from this idea?

Actually, in Visser Visser One says she studied various cult leaders and religious gurus throughout human history in order to get the very idea for The Sharing...so in a way, its roots are based in other ways that humans are gathered into groups in a time of need to be "a part" of something bigger.

I can definitely see the Yeerks using The Sharing as a subversive rehabilitation method.  I'm pretty sure there was a thread on RAF at one point or another about post-war Yeerks being used to control criminals, and as very intimate therapists, so why not during the series as well--for more nefarious reasons?

The rehab is definitely an option. A very high powered judge could have access to jails, prisons, juvenile detention centers and all sorts of facilities with potential hosts that could be shipped to the Yeerk Pool and/or Mothership over night and released the next day on furlough or work release with special focus on projects for The Sharing.

I move that the Sharing also operate alcohol and drug addiction treatment programs.  I am confident that a Yeerk could keep a person away from alcohol or drugs.
