Throughout the series it's heavily implied that Jake and Marco have been best friends since day one. Possibly since they were babies, although that could be an exaggeration. (Like the idea of falling in love with someone at first glance)
We also never see Peter interacting with Jake's parents at anytime. So here are some theories in favor of the "They met as babies" idea.
1: Their mothers arranged and hosted playdates.
2: They went to the same daycare.
3: Met in Kindergarten.
Any other theories?

My headcanon is that Eva and Jean met while they were pregnant and Eva pursued the friendship so she could have someone to borrow diapers from. There's no canon evidence for this at all, but it entertains me.
I'm not sure we can deduce anything from the fact that Peter doesn't communicate on-page with Steve and Jean, since it's implied that the time he doesn't spend in the Sad Cave he spends as a bit of a workaholic (Marco mentions 12-hour days and at least one conversation has him going in early to work).
I think in #51 Marco says he and Jake have been best friends 'since second grade', but eh, ghostwriter.

The Ellimist did a bit of "non-interfering" and posed as their kindergarten teacher. He then made Marco and Jake sit in the time out.corner, where Jake was first exposed to Marco's wit.

But why would the Ellimist be paying attention to Jake when he actually said that he and Rachel were involved by accident? The Ellimist had his eyes on Marco, Ax, Tobias, and Cassie.

I always thought that Jake was playing basketball when he was really little so he kept missing, and eventually his ball landed in Marco's backyard.
Or that Marco ran over Jake on his bike.

I always thought Eva was making some errand over at Jake's house, the two started building blocks together, and their friendship was cemented. Of course, it also helps that one of my favorite Animorphs authors wrote that event in a story I love....

Visser One was scouting out potential hosts for her yeerk army. While looking at the Berenson house at Tom (who then was too young to be infested yet in about a decade would make a perfect host) Peter needed to go to work and couldnt leave the then 4 year old Marco at home alone. In order to not arouse suspision she brought Marco with her to the Berenson house with the cover of looking for a playdate for Marco. Jake and Marco then thwarted her plans by slowly morphing into teenagers over the course of 10 years and then killing Visser One

As of #10, it seems like Eva was infested when Marco was about 9 years old.

I did review those stories a number of times. The first one twice, and the sequel seven times. I've also started a little side-project that analyzes many of the fan fictions on that TV Tropes page, but I'm not finished with it and I haven't touched it in a while. The one I was talking about is called The Elysia Wars. A VERY old story, in an unfinished series. It was written back in '99. I talked to the author a while back. Anyone interested in the link? Or if you want it, Lisa, just pm me and I'll send it to you. I also LOVED L'Angel's stuff. ;D

With no offense meant to anyone else, I only want to analyze fan fictions that I've already read that are on the TV Tropes page. Any more than that and I'd be innnundated (sp?) with too many self-imposed obligations. So yeah, I will definitely analyze HotPinkCoffee's fiction, after I get done the other fics on my Sandbox.

So, you're reading Elysia wars? Ha! I know of an even better fanfic that REALLY gets into the spirit of Animorphs. It's wonderfully worded, with a compelling drama, and the characters are all kept totally in character. The author spends her time nowadays writing Harry Potter fiction, so that should tell you something about her writing skills. ;D
