Title: Descrambling the WAA Chat Room
Post by: Dogman15 on January 30, 2011, 06:01:52 PM
In book 16, The Warning, the Animorphs watch a chat room conversation unfold. (Characters here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minor_humans_(Animorphs)#Instant_messaging_individuals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minor_humans_(Animorphs)#Instant_messaging_individuals))

Because they can only type ten words or so at a time, their conversations and sentences are broken up. Here, I have reconstructed everything they say in a way that is easier to read, while also correcting spelling, grammar, and capitalization. Enjoy!

YeerKiller9: There's no way!
GoVikes: You have to chop them up to be sure they're really dead.
Chazz: Why don't we get serious here? The Yeerks are only getting stronger. And instead of using this Chat to plan some action, we end up doing nothing.
YeerKiller9: Listen to me, I was infested by a Yeerk. It was only by a miracle I escaped.
YrkH8er: Kill all Yeerks!
Gump8293: I think my dad is one. What can I do? I mean it's weird because my dad actually seems [nice] in some ways. But he is too nice. He's got all these new friends suddenly and he's with them all the time. The other day I heard my dad and these new friends whispering about someone called "Visher" or "Vister" or something.
GoVikes: Yeerks are like worms. If you just cut them in half they just grow again.
YrkH8er: Kill all Yeerks!
CKDsweet: Can anyone help me? There's this organization called The Sharing, and I think they are all Yeerks.
YrkH8er: The Sharing is okay. I checked them out.
Chazz: Wrong. The Sharing is a Yeerk front organization.
YerkH8er: No way. They're like Boy Scouts.
Carlito: I've discovered that Yeerks need to go someplace secret and feed or replenish. Every three days. I think they get out of their host body to do this.
GoVikes: They're like snails, only without a shell.
MegMom: Gump, I think it's "Visser." I think a Visser is like a general or something. I think Visser is a rank.
GoVikes: Rank. LOL. Totally rank.
Gump8293: Isn't there any way for me to get my dad to stop being a Yeerk?
YrkH8er: Kill all Yeerks!
YrkH8er: Talk to your dad. Tell him what you think.
Chazz: NO Gump. Say NOTHING to your father. If you say anything you'll be next.
MegMom: Gump, listen to Chazz. He's right. You can't do anything to save your father. All you can do is get hurt.
Fitey777: Hi everyone. I have a name to add to the list of known Yeerks.
Gump8293: I have to DO something.
YrkH8er: Kill all Yeerks!
Chazz: Hello Fitey.
MegMom: Good, Fitey's here.
Fitey777: Charles J. Sofor. He's the deputy police chief in the capital. I am close to getting the location of a Yeerk feeding area.
GoVikes: Chop him up in little pieces.

     The chief's name is Sofor?

That's what Fitey777 said.

That's silly. I bet K.A. didn't realize that she had already used that name in The Andalite Chronicles with the War-Prince that trained Elfangor and Arbron.

 Or maybe she did and she wanted to see if fans would be able to catch it.

Well Terenia certainly caught it, and I wouldn't have...

Follow up questions.

What happened to the chatroom? Did Esplin 9466 (the twin) deactivate it after his mansion burned down? Why didn't they try to rally those people who knew what they were talking about? Cassie made contact with Gump easily enough. Why not try to find the others and provide them with intell or see what they know.

Well we don't really know for sure what happened to Visser Three's twin. It's possible he continued what he had been doing, using the site to track down Controllers in order to survive by consuming Yeerks every three days. However, since it's never mentioned again, we could just as easily assume the site was shut down.

I think it's highly unlikely that anyone else in the chat knew more than the Animorphs did. Most were probably spammers, paranoid conspiracy nuts or Controllers, very few actually seemed to be normal people who'd somehow figured out what was going on. After what happened with Fenestre, the Animorphs probably decided it wasn't worth the risk, since they couldn't be sure who was a Controller or not.

Do you pronounce his last name "Fen-es-tray" or "Fen-es-ter"? I know it's based on the French word for window...

I've always pronounced it "Fen-es-ter".

It's almost scary how much technology has changed since I first read this book. My nine year old brother is reading all my animorphs books and he just finished number 16. When he first started reading it, he opened it up to the first page and stopped with a confused look on his face, got up off the couch, strode over to me, shoved the book under my nose, pointed to the second paragraph and asked "why is he waiting for his modem to dial?" "Modems don't dial."

I patiently tried to explain to him that internet used to be hooked up to the phone, which he sternly refused to believe. How times have changed.

LMFAO! Dude, it's going to be crazy ten years from now. "You used a remote for your television? What, you can't change the channel with your thoughts?"

Commercials on TV: They're terrifically expensive, easily avoided with DVRs, and inefficiently target mass audiences. Unless somebody comes up with a way to force you to watch them -- as with video on the Internet -- who's going to pay for them?

Honestly though, I don't really believe a lot of those things they predict.

These Messages will always be the main reason people watch the Stupid Bowl.

Can't argue there.

Thus, since people need a reason to watch the Stupid Bowl, These Messages will always exist.

I don't think the NFL will ever abolish the Stupid Bowl as they get massive hunks of money from These Messages.

These Messages are key to the success of many companies, especially the video game and computer industries.
