I was looking up some name meanings for a story I'm reading, and I thought, "You know, while I'm at it, I may as well look up the meanings for the Animorph's names. Anyways, this is what I got from the site, and I found some of them to be interesting.
Jake (Jacob) Comes from the latin Iacobus. Means "holder of heel", or "supplanter", as Jacob was said to have carried his twin's heel upon leaving his mother's womb. It's a biblical name.
Cassie: (Cassandra) Means "shining upon man". In greece, Cassandra was a prophet, who made predictions people often dismissed as her seeking attention. I found this interesting, because, while Cassie wasn't a Prophet, she was an anomoly. And we all sort of dismiss Cassie :P
David: Means "Beloved", but also applies to the first king of Israel. This does not apply to our David, though.
Tobias: Means "God is Good." He was a hero in the book of Tobit, and is said to have expelled demons from his future wife, Sarah.
James: Comes from the latin Iacomus. It's associated with two apostles in the Christian Bible, and various kings. But what I found interesting about James/Iacomus, was that it is related/derrived to the word Jacob/Iacomus. I'd like to think that this is more than a coincidence on Applegate's part, having the leader of the Auxiliaries be named James. It seemed like Jake and James were being compared in terms of leadership.
Rachel: Means "ewe"...Whatever that is...Apparently it means "Innocent Lamb", which I find ironic in this instance.
Melissa: Means "Bee". It's also the name of a Nympth who loved the greek god Zeus.
Tom: (Thomas): Means "Twin". Thomas was also the apostle who denied the resurrection of Christ.

I thought you meant the alien names. Who knows why she chose the human names she did? Especially considering they have no correlation. You want meaningful names, talk to J.K. Rowling. 8)

Haha, "Innocent Lamb." That's hilarious. :XD: Don't tell Rachel that that's what her name means, or she'll probably murder whichever of her parents who decided to call her that.
And you're probably right, I'll bet the connection between Jake and James was intentional.
Also, I noticed that you missed Marco. I'm guessing it's probably derived from "Marcus" somewhere along the line? Try looking up Marcus.

A Ewe is a female sheep. However I can't imagine Rachel liking being compared to a sheep.

David: Means "Beloved", but also applies to the first king of Israel. This does not apply to our David, though.
Although, if you look closely at the story of King David there are some parallels.
In the Bible, David coveted the wife of his most loyal general, Uriah. He sent Uriah to the frontlines where he was quickly killed and as punishment, God killed David's son. (Incidentally, it was a profit named Nathaniel who told him. Booyah.)
David of the Animorphs coveted what the others had. He crossed lines in order to get what he wanted including betraying the people who were trying to help him and attempting to murder them.

Getting out my mother's book "6000+ Names For Your Baby"
Marco: (Latin) see Marcus
Marcus: (Latin ) see Mark
(SIGH) :dull:
Mark: (Latin) "belonging to Mars; a warrior." Var. and dim., Marc, Marco, Marcus, Marcel, March, Marcy, Marek, Mars, Martin, Martyn; Marty.
I guess that definition makes sense for Marco.

I also believe that our David coveted Cassie.
Thus why I completely sympathize with David: I'm a Cassie fanboy.

I like finding out the meaning behind names, but in this case I think at least most of it will have been coincidental.
