So, I have to ask, if you were to make a soundtrack for the Animorph books, which songs would you include, and why?

I'll start with the song that prompted this post. When I was reading #54 I was listening to "lead sails and a paper anchor" by atreyu, and unwittingly stumbled upon the song that I think perfectly portrays the emotions of that book - melodic and haunting, with a lot of pain and indignation, particularly in the verses and the bridge of the song, yet the chorus is still incredibly moving, exuding a sense of hope . I thought it was a perfect match for the emotional struggles of the end of the series.

So what about you guys, any songs that run through your mind when you think about/read the books?

The song Sunday Morning, by No Doubt, especially the bridge (at around 2:45 on the video), reminds me of book 19:

The Last of the Haunted, by An Acoustic Sin, always reminds me of the Yeerks, but it's not on YouTube. I might rectify that soon.

VAST is a really good band ^^
And I also really like Invasion by Eisley.
If we find good songs, we could make an OST and pack it with the Ebooks! That'd be awesome!
But first, we need to find more songs/musics ^^ And then vote for the best ones.

I was looking for a good battle song (I'm facing some tough challenges IRL), and found Man on a Mission, by Gamma Ray. It's so good, just reading the lyrics gave me chills. It's also perfect for the Animorphs; almost every line of the song can be matched to part of the series.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Dameg :D

I love this song, and this band ;D  Very alien/space/conspiracy/dystopia oriented, so they tend to make me think of stuff like 1984 and of course Animorphs.

This song in particular was used as inspiration for Stephenie Meyer ( :facepalm2: ) in her alien parasite book The Host (the only one I could actually, sort of, enjoy..)

 Make me think he's finally overcome the internal struggle and decided that he's going to be the one to fight for it.  It makes me think of cassie's crisis of faith in books 16 17 and 19.

I also found this song, a generic leaving/death song, but a good one (another skillet song, sorry for that, but they're pretty good)

This song, for me, fits into the war in general, but specifically to Rachel's death in a very bittersweet sort of way. It could also apply to Aldrea and Dak or even Elfangor and Loren.

No, no, we're still missing a very important part of it, we need songs that fit the humor of the books.  One of the reasons, maybe the biggest, that I like the books is because they're so funny.  I'm having a hard time thinking of any songs that really fit though.  I came up with this one for your favorite time Ax tried to induce a hyperglycemic coma, or in MM1 when Ax and Marco crashed that party

oh, I prolly shoulda mentioned, I never actually finished the series :P  I'm reading through them now from the start on ebooks, actually it's surprised me how good they are, I figured when I started it'd just kinda be a nice nostalgic moment, but I think I might actually like them more now than I did ten years ago.  I certainly appreciate some of the content more.  Used to I couldn't stand some of Cassie's moral dilemas, now I don't necessarily agree with her choices, but I defintely apreciate the ethical discussions on some of the greyer aspects of war.  And Jakes stuff with being a leader really hits home now.

Don't be surprised if I tell you... they're great ^^ Really, I liked them and think they fit to Animorphs!

The 2nd is really nice for Rachel, the 3rd perfect for the end of #13 for Tobias, and the 4th... I would say for Tobias (end of the first book, for example) or maybe for the Controller who wanna be free as nothlit in one of the last books.

I really liked that last song by switchfoot, it was awesome (I'm trying to download it right now, haha) but it just doesn't seem to fit with tobias for me. In a wierd sort of way it makes me think more of Rachel and her relationship with Tobias, especially the part that says "you're the only one that can save me from me" like she's struggling with herself and Tobias offers her an anchor, a semblance of sanity in her life

Well, for me, this sentence could fit to Tobias too. He decided to be a hawk, to live as a hawk, and that would be as if he asked Rachel to take him back to humanity. Not perfect, I know...
Maybe we can say it fits to both of them...

OK, now we have many songs, I think it would be nice to decide with which book they'd fit the most, and the order, so we could make our soundtrack ^^

So, here the songs, please tell with which character(s) and which volume(s) they'd fit the most (I put the singer, the title with a link to the Youtube, and then what people who posted this song suggested):


The goal would be to find the order of the songs (in the soundtrack), and the volume they go with... So please everybody give your feelings ^^ (and if you think a song don't really fit enough to Animorphs, tell us!)

PS: You still can add songs, of course. We really miss one for the morphing... and one for the Howlers or the Iskoorts, and one for the Leerans, and one for the Helmacrons...

That should probably be for one of Rachel's. It's a battle song, which fits her perfectly. The lines about the "dark side" and death fit her, too. The finishing touch: some of the lines fit Rachel & Tobias.
hmm, I'm not sure what volume would go well with this, though. Perhaps #48? It's certainly Rachel's darkest moment, which fits the overall tone...

I love that song!! I do since I heard it in Densha Otoko (the drama). I added it to the list of songs. I think it would be nice for the first volume with the Chees.

About Man on a mission, I agree it could be cool for Rachel, but not for the #48. We have songs who fit way more with this volume. I'm sure some missions were crazy for Rachel before or after that. It would be nice for the stormiest battle of Animorphs, which is............??

True. The battle with mean Rachel/nice Rachel in The Separation is probably her craziest.

...a matter of personal opinion. The final battle is possibly the stormiest, and probably the most desperate, but it's not one of Rachel's books. Still, the song would probably work.

For Man on a mission, I really have no idea... I should re-read the Animorphs to remember which one is the craziest battle... I just had, I don't know why, but the picture of Rachel as a bear in MM1 for this song... Well, maybe not the best idea.

I edited the list (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=5154.msg428270#msg428270) of songs, to add this 3 songs, and put them in a kind of order: first the songs with already a volume (in order of volumes), then the songs with a character only, and at the end the songs with no character, no volume...
Maybe it'll be easier to give your advice now.

So here my suggestions for the songs with no volume:
Foo Fighters - Learn to fly for Tobias: #13
Eels - I like birds for Tobias: #4 seegulls time or #15 parrots time
Daughtry - Home for Tobias #13,23,33,43 and 49: I would say, more for the #13 or #23... I don't remember when Tobias see the poster with the hawk and how long hawks live... but I think it'd be nice for this volume.
Switchfoot - Free for Tobias: #3 (or maybe even end of #1)
Within Temptation - Stand my ground for Rachel : I think #7 would be the best (or maybe #22)
Ok Go - Invincible for Rachel: #7, 32 or 37...? or maybe MM1?
Kat DeLuna - Animal for Rachel: why not #2? she enjoyed so much the cat morph... and that's what I feel in this song: cat-woman Rachel ^^
Skillet- Hero for Cassie: #19 or 29
Within Temptation - What have you done for Tom & Jake or V1 & Marco: so choice is between #15, 30+31 (both Marco/V1 and Jake/Tom, and I think it'd be the best)
STYX - Mr. Roboto for the Chees: #10
Job For A Cowboy - Entombment of a Machine for Crayak: #26 or TEC
Staind - For you for Tom or another Controller: I'd say #6 because Jake is a Controller and has Tom's memories of being a Controller...

I've added your songs in the list, and edited Hero => #19 and Learn to fly => #3 or #13.
I'm waiting for the other RAFians to tell me what they think...
If some songs fit to many volumes and we can't decide where to put them exactly, they'll go in the holes (volumes who have no song).

I can cut the songs, don't worry. If we want, we can cut some of them so everything will be OK. I'll also try to find the songs in good quality ^^

You know, the song Tobias was referring to on the Anti-Morphing Ray arc. It was a Goo Goo Dolls song, and it made people a little bit more... intimate. Rachel and Tobias, included. It was so popular even a hawk remembers it.

Could it be Iris, by any chance?

OK, so these ones don't apply to Animorphs specifically, because I find myself thinking of them in great battle scenes in general when I'm reading, but the bigger Animorphs battles were no exception.

With Mad World, I've always thought that the haunting lyrics and melody make great background music for those times in battles when a character steps back and sees it all happening in slow motion while becoming overwhelmed with the horror of it all.:

Then there's March of Cambreadth, which is Celtic music at its most bad-ass. Maybe great for those couple of minutes it takes to morph. What about Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace?

Lyrically the song fits morphing and turning into animals like controlling the animal's instincts and stuff, but also the song can fit some of the more emotional things the Animorphs had to go through, particularly Rachel battling her "dark" side.

@Whatitdo: What I think so far is that it's cool (it's a good band and some songs fit very well) but it'd be even better if you gave us an idea of where you'd like to see them. Except the Rachel&Tobias/Cassie&Jake one, you didn't say anything...

- Stronger => Tom (to Jake), maybe in the end of #1 or near the end of the series
- The War is Over => for #54 Jake (when he's just a morphing teacher and bitter about the end of the war)

Matthew Good - "A Silent Army in the Trees" for either Jake or Marco towards the end of the series (maybe Jake in #31, actually). I can very much see Jake being the kind of kid who'd play war games as a little kid, and this song is a reflection on how war in real life is so much more damaging and dehumanizing than people imagine it as. These are all really great songs, I like them a lot! And a lot of them are new to me, which is even better! But I do have one concern, I'm wondering if it's such a good idea to attach them to specific volumes in the series? I have noticed that every song on the lst could be applied to a lot of different situations throughout the books, some even apply across the entire series, and I think everyone would have a different response to the songs. I'm wondering if it would be better to leave the songs unbound, to just put them out as an unorficial "soundtrack" and let the readers decide where they best fit in the animorphs story?

Well, that was just to have a pretty nice order. Of course, it wouldn't mean that you have to listen the songs while reading the book we want it attached to. It's just because some songs go really well with some books, for example end books, and it's better not to listen to them while reading the first book, I think.
Well, if you don't really want an order, if nobody care except me, I won't keep any order...

PS: I haven't listened the last songs, I have a problem with Youtube since yesterday =_='

This song always reminded me of the Yeerks, because when they die, they "stop the world and melt" with the others...XD   And it has a few lines about imaginary grace, saving the human's race, not comprehending the race that had long gone by...yeah, it's a stretch!  LOL.

So, I'm sorry for the late, but I'm updating the list now and even beginning to make the soundtrack file.

@LisaCharly: I put Matthew Good - A Silent Army in the Trees for #31, Matthew Good - Weapon for #33 after the other ones, KT Tunstall - Funnyman for #15, and for Matthew Good - Blue Skies Over Bad Lands I chose #50 because #19 already has a lot of songs and I think it fit better #50 over #29. But if somebody disagree, I'll change.

@Myitt: I put Modern English - I melt with you for Elfangor/Loren.

@Unknown user: I put Radiohead - Creep for #1 Tobias. Do you agree?

Okay I know this song's completely cheesy, but whatever. Completely ignoring the fact that this song's obviously about a girl, I've always imagined this to be a hypothetical conversation Tobias imagines having with Elfangor after learning that he's Elfangor's son (book #23).

Elfangor remembering the first time he met Tobias as he looked down on him while he died.

Tobias thinking of why Elfangor left Earth and back to the war – so he could try to save Tobias and Loren and the rest of Earth. "Eflangor had run away from his duty when he came to Earth. He'd had no choice but to return to that duty. No choice at all, if he was to play the part he had to play, and be the great prince he was. I'd lost a father. Because of that fact. Elfangor had been where he had to be, when he had to be there, to change the lives of five ordinary kids forever. And maybe... maybe... save the human race." (Book #23, pg. 150) Also that last line relate to how for a majority of the series Tobias and the other Animorphs base their impressions of Andalites off Elfangor and expect them to come rescue Earth.

Tobias hoping that Elfangor thought of him while he was away from Earth and tired from the war. *shrugs* IDK...


Better Than Ezra – "Breathless"
I've always thought this song summed up Rachel's strength to Tobias quite nicely, particularly in that beach scene at the end of book #33.

This book focused a lot on Tobias not really knowing who he was, but at the end he realized it didn't really matter, except that Rachel loved him. "Who am I? What am I? A bird. A boy. Something not quite human. Something more than human. The person Rachel loves." (pg. 155)

After everything that had happened Rachel knows how to take Tobias's mind off of the pain and make him smile again. "Then, she said, 'Hey, it's nice and warm. But there are some killer thermals.' I smiled. 'Let's fly.' 'Yeah," she agreed. 'Right after I do this.' She kissed me. 'Okay, now let's fly,' she said and laughed her wild, wicked, self-mocking Rachel laugh. And in a short time we were coasting on a thermal, high over the beach. Over the distant hills. Over the city. Over everything. The memory of the mission was far behind. The close call with death forgotten. For a while." (pg. 155)

Song about Jake after the war (book #54). Thinking about some of the things that he had to do, his guilt of Tom's and Rachel's deaths, and his fallout from his relationship with Cassie.

I left the courtroom straightaway and found my way back to my hotel room. I sat on the bed and just held my head in my hands and stared. I don't know how long. (pg. 85)

THAT SONG REMINDED ME OF RACHEL! I was thinking about the lyrics one day and how the inspiration for the song was loosely based off of Jack Kerouac's novel On The Road and the line (from the book) goes like:

"The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow Roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars, and in the middle, you see the blue center-light pop, and everybody goes ahh.."

Idk it just reminded me of Rachel. I totally get what you're talking about though. I have that song and the song "Fifteen" by Taylor Swift on my Animorphs playlist. I don't even like those two and they just don't go with everything else on my ipod~ but whatevs.

The song "This Is War" by 30 Seconds to Mars is such a perfect fit for the entire series. The lyrics, the key, the message...everythin g. In fact, this song is the reason that I got back into Animorphs over the summer. I reread the series two summers ago (when I joined), and thought it was nice for nostalgia's sake, but didn't really plan to read them again in the future. Then I heard this song in July and thought..."Animorphs." And I reread the series again. I'm cool.

I love their song and music video for "Kings + Queens." It's so beautiful, plus there's a Banksy reference :D
