Title: animals or aliens
Post by: dolphin4077 on December 17, 2009, 01:21:40 AM

Sorry if anyone already posted this topic.  I was just wondering what hooked you into Animorphs more, the turning into animals or the saving the world from aliens parasites?

Aliens. Animorphs was my springboard into sci-fi geekery.

I'm going to be the first to say "animals."  Yeah, the aliens were awesome, of course.  But what kid hasn't wondered what it was like to be a hawk, or a cat, or a dog?  Animorphs, for me, was sort of a dream come true in that aspect.  I always used to play around and pretend that I could morph.

I would say aliens.

Probably transforming into Animals.  There are plenty of other things out there that deal with aliens, but not so many kids transforming into animals plot lines...

The majestic mix of the two

I guess I'd say the animals were my more favorite part, but I don't know if just that would have drawn me to the series without the aliens there

I know michael and ka wanted to do a series about kids turning into animals and then they had to come up with a threat and landed on aliens so i guess the animals drew them in too

For me, the aliens. The idea that our planet was being destroyed by a secret invasion right under our noses was really compelling. Not to mentioned it explained a lot about my science teacher.

I remember being weirded out by morphing at first -- unsure and almost uncomfortable reading about it. I'm not positive if this was a reflection of Cassie's moral dilemma about where to draw the line, or if it was an unease with the idea of having to eliminate one's body and replace it with a different one in order to be successful.

After the first couple of books, though, I found I perceived the morphing as a really cool and useful tool and, although I was interested in the depiction of the animals' instincts, it was reading about how a few kids formed the Yeerk resistance that snagged me right from the beginning.

It's hard to say. Book 8 was the first one I read, so the first cover I saw was an alien turning into a Human. Or the other way around as I thought before reading the book. The story itsself had a blend of serious and comic to it.

Probably more the aliens for me. I have been, and always shall be, a sci-fi fan. I don't think the series would have grabbed me at all without also having the animals, though.

At first it was the whole turning into animals thing.  The covers are what attracted me initially.  Prior to Animorphs I had been really into this comic book series called Terratopia, where a bunch of kids can turn into one totem animal using a necklace and hippie powers to save the Earth from pollution and whatnot x3

But I already liked aliens at that point, and the fact that there was a great intergalactic storyline with great alien characters and races pretty soon overruled even my love of the whole animal mind aspect x3

So I guess, in a nutshell-- for this party, I came for the animals, but I stayed for the aliens :D

the animals definitely at first.
i looked at the covers and saw humans turning into animals.

instant win.

the addition of the aliens through enough spice into the mix to keep me hooked.

Definitely the animals. in fact if the covers didnt show them morphing I probably would have never even gotten into the series

I would have to say the mix of the two... I mean, there's a ton of stuff out there about aliens... So that would not have been the reason for it being so great to me, (even though I do like most of that stuff)...
But just the kids turning into animals probably wouldn't have been that fascinating to me (although it was fascinating by itself) if there hadn't been some kind of life-threatening conflict...

For me, it was the animals.  Without a doubt.  I spent most of my time with animal books and watching animal shows, and whatnot.

Goosebumps aside (considering they weren't a continuity series, if you catch my drift), Animorphs were my first real fiction books I read outside of school.  From there I went to Harry Potter.

animals for me. I, actually do judge a book by it's cover... in the literal sense of the term. on the cover were animals so I thought I'd like the book. I probably wouldn't have gotten into it if I say aliens on the cover.

Actually, that's a good point. If there were some alien imagery on the covers, the series would probably have been more likely to just be sci-fi noise to me.

Same here, it was the covers that got my 6-year old attention.
The scifi really got me to be a huge fan though.

Aliens. Of course ^^' I'm a SF/fantasy fanatic since I'm 6!

Both. I liked the story more for the themes (call me a nerd if you will), the character development and the evolution of the character's motives. I liked it as a kid because it was real to me - it didn't talk down to me, and at that age, they did things I probably would have done similarly.

That was after I read a couple/few books though. Originally, I have to give it to the covers.

The first book I read was #3. I was a depressed kid, and I wanted an escape. I remember always thinking to myself that if I could be trapped as a bird, if would I take the choice. I also really liked how he wasn't just Tobias in a different body, but rather a hawk that was combined with a person. Hell, sometimes I wish I could be a bird or a wolf or something and escape from my life for a couple months - I'm not naive enough to think I'd never miss being human, but an extended break with nothing but instincts to guide me sounds... I don't know how else to say it, but extremely peaceful and romantic.

Come to think of it, that was one of the major draws to Animorphs - how morphs affected the character's emotions and motives in a subtle way, even after they were in control. It was eroded later in the series as they became more and more used to morphing, but I still remember how Rachel was more confident as a cat or how happy Jake was as a dog, even after they had subdued the animal's instincts.

Still, it wouldn't have been Animorphs without the constant paranoia and fear of the Yeerks and how everyone might be a controller. How hard it was to trust anyone and the constant feeling of pressing loneliness. I have to say, it all worked together to give a unique story with unique concepts and themes that still cause me to think today.

Either way, I still look out windows the same way I did when I was originally reading the series - not as a way to zone out or to admire the trees, but with a strong desire to just fly out of them and escape.

Definitely the aliens. I loved the books (like #18, #26, #34) where the Animorphs visited alien worlds. I mean, how cool would that be?

Aliens, the animals were cool but I think it could have been an amazing series even without morphing.

Both equally.  When I first found out about the series, I thought they were aliens who turned into animals.  How wrong I was.

Ditto.  As a kid, if the covers didn't show kids turning into animals on the cover (or just animals in general), and if the covers had pictures of andalites and yeerks and yeerk pools and spaceships etc... I don't think I'd have ever picked any of the books up, let alone read them.

However, now that I'm not a kid - yeah, the kids-vs-aliens intergalactic-space-war theme would attract me to the books and I would probably read them even if the ani's didn't turn into animals (comparable to something like the Tomorrow series, I suppose)... althought the series would then lose its "uniqueness" in my mind

The animals caught my interest, but the aliens won me over 8)

The animals. I was never a sci-fi fan, and I can still hardly stand it. But I loved the animal aspect - the idea of becoming one was just overwhelmingly cool, and still is.

I thought it was dumb at first actually. And way overused. But then a friend introduced mw to the series and I absolutely loved it!

I don't know what really attracted me to the Animorphs, I just read books at an unsustainable pace at the time that Animorphs bumped into me and I into it. As for what kept me reading: the Aliens.

I don't know how I got into it, I think it was the animals... But I stayed for the characters... Is that a cop answer? I feel like it might be. Aliens and animals both are awesome, but the people in it made it for me. I would constantly quote their lines and thoughts out loud.

It might have been "animals" right off the bat for me, specifically the morphing cover and flipbook animations. But then, as Goom said, the sci-fi and aliens reigned me in further.

Both equally. I had already gotten extremely hooked on a TV series called Tracker that involved aliens taking over human bodies (although their hosts died, leaving the alien the only one in the body),so that part got my attention. But so did the animal stuff, since I'm a huge animal lover.
