What determines the price of the books? It has taken me several years to collect all but two of the Animorph books through thrift stores and yard sales. I finally decided to just go to Amazon and by the last two I need.
I looked through the list of Animorphs books, which are listed between 1 penny and five dollars. Except for the two I need #51 and #53 which are $16 and $12 bucks... What the heck? Even the last book #54 is only 34 cents. :-\ I would have figured that one would be the most expensive/hardest to find? Other then the fact that there the last two I need, why would their price be so much higher then all the other books? Are they rare or particularly good books or something?

They knew that you wanted them and automatically adjusted the price. :P
Honestly, I have no clue. Most of the books on Amazon are secondhand, I am assuming (since it's out of print). Doesn't the seller determine the price? Maybe the people who are selling those books don't really have an idea of what a reasonable price is for an old Ani book. They think it's "vintage" and therefore worth something, lol.

I don't have an answer, but that's really weird. I just checked Abebooks and found the same thing.
Found #53 on ebay though...bid is at $4.25:

I've been thinking about suggesting a buy/sell/trade section for the forum, actually...

That's a good idea, Liz. I know that there are quite a few people here looking to expand their collection. And I know that I, personally, have quite a few doubles.
-
when i went hunting to buy the whole series i think it was 51-53 they always said "RARE HARD TO FIND!!"
-
I lost most of my collection but i have been collecting some through thrift stores and such got 23 and 35 i think last week. both for a dollar and 30 cents
-
well, that's a bit pricey.
i'd imagine book #1 and the chronicles would be more, though.
-
you know several years back i saw Visser at the Dollar tree store there were like 50 of them
now i regret not buying one. I do have my own copy but i already had one when i saw it.

thats where i got mine lol

I guess there's just less of those books circulating around than the other ones. That's why people decided to charge more for them because they know that someone would buy them at that price just to get the entire set.
-
I keep meaning to finally finish my collection. But i'm afraid of coming across prices like that lol
oh why did my mom have to sell my collection? :( it was from #1 up through the 40s, and that was with the chronicles, altermorphs(or whatever they're called lol) and the tv cast book....i would much rather be buying like 10 or less books rather than the like 30+ i need now :( lol

supply and demand

As I recall, #20 is the hardest to obtain, as it was (supposedly) the first to go out-of-print.
This may be inaccurate, but my experiences with trying to find it agree with the information I've been given.
-
I have three #20's lol
Yea I noticed that too, the 50's are all pretty expensive and harder to find. I think alot of people stopped buying the books and they got less popular which is why the series ended, so obviously less copies of each book were printed during its downfall
