Title: Hot Rock Animorphs
Post by: Shark Akhrrana on April 29, 2009, 01:03:19 PM
I was looking at my brother's Vinyl collection and came across the cover of HOT ROCKS by Rolling Stones
and saw it was about 90% the same as the cover of the last book.
So that lead me to think K.A's favorite rock group is teh Rolling stones.
not only because of the cover but also Ax quotes them in book 8
and Elfangor listened to Rolling Stones in the Taxxon homeword.

what do you think =D

Ax quoted them? That's normally the kind of weird minor detail I'd remember, but I'm not very familiar with the Rolling Stones.

Aximili quoted them in his diary in book 8 i'll see if i can find the exact quote

Quote
Chapter Eleven
"You can't always get what you want. But If you try sometimes, you just might find, you get
what you need." A famous human named Rolling Stones said that. I thought it was very wise,
for a human. - From the Earth Diary of Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill

Yeah, it's already been known that they're both similar, and that the last book cover was inspired by the Rolling Stones. I believe it's David B. Mattingly who is the fan though because K.A. never actually gave any ideas for the book covers. The marketing people would just take the brief plot outlines that she would make months in advance and then plan the cover based on it (in most cases it was whatever new morph they would be acquiring in that book). Same thing goes for the titles for every Animorph book. K.A. never actually named any of them, it was the marketing team behind Animorphs that did that.

I'm sure she likes them
liek i said
Aximili quotes them
and Elfangor listens to them in the Mustang in the Taxxon homeworld
to many Rolling stone related things right there

I knew that the cover was based on that album, but I had never actually seen the album before.  That's really awesome. O:

The Rolling Stones are mentioned in the books though, like Shark said, so maybe there is a connection?

Maybe KA suggested the idea for the final book cover, maybe someone knew that KA was a fan and did it, or maybe it's just a coincidence? David B. Mattingly could be a fan too.

Wow!  Nice find.

I'll have to listen to that album, while reading The Beginning backwards--to search for hidden messages.

I remember reading that she was a huge Stones fan and big Star Trek fan. Hence the copious references throughout the books. To quote Kris Kristofferson who i am listening to, "Blame it on the Stones"

I think Elfangor listens to "I Can't Get No Satifsfaction" in the car while driving on the Andalite homeworld.

The same day I bought #54 (release date) I saw the album while I was at the check out stand. I was the first to reported it (on Morphz.com) .

I got Hot Rocks this weekend, looked at the insert, and noticed it was a poster of the cover. When I pulled it out, I had the faintest hope it was a poster of 54. Now I really want a poster of 54.

I wonder how Scholastic wasn't sued for this.

I wonder how Scholastic wasn't sued for this.

Probably because there's actually not much of a copyright case.  Shout-outs are pretty clearly fair use, especially when there's no commercial damage involved.

ABKCO Records: Your honor, clearly Scholastic intends to bamboozle Stones fans into purchasing The Beginning instead of Hot Rocks.  When awarding damages don't only consider the commercial loss of sales stolen from a thirty-four-year-old album--possibly hundreds of dollars a year--but also the consternation caused to old fogeys when they discover that the novel they just purchased will not in fact play on their turntables.

On top of that, the story is clearly a rip-off of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," included in Hot Rocks.

Judge:  BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I certainly wouldn't sue.

Yup! I have the Hot Rocks album too, and I actually recorded it to MP3 from the vinyl (it's scratchy, but it makes it feel more vintage and authentic). It's a pretty good compilation. It basically has their best hits from their early years till 72. The second album is much better IMO (sides 3-4), because it steers away from the delta-blues and into more of a unique sound.

I'm almost 100% sure that KA had this album back when she was a kid, ironically around the same age as the Animorphs were.

I don't know about favorite, but it is definitely perfect for use in the Animorphs in terms of a good representation. Frankly, I don't see the Rolling Stones as that kind of epic cover. I see them more of a Sticky Fingers cover.
