Title: One of the bestselling series of all time????
Post by: msteck on April 15, 2009, 02:56:13 AM
Hey guys, I was on Wikipedia the other day reading about the bestselling books of all time, and to my surprise Animorphs was not featured on the list.

The list even includes bestselling series of all time as well and can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books#List_of_best-selling_book_series .  I did a little research and couldn't find a definitive number of total copies sold anywhere, but I did find this: "According to the publisher, Animorphs, which debuted in June 1996 with much promotional fanfare, had a significantly stronger initial sell-in than did any other Scholastic series, including Goosebumps and the Baby-sitters Club. Now approaching the 10-million-copy in-print mark, Animorphs resides at the top of PW's children's paperback series bestseller list, where booksellers predict it will roost for the foreseeable future." from an article published in 1997 (also om Wikipedia).

Can anyone find the total number of Animorphs books that have been sold?? If 10 million were sold that early in the series release, I think that there is a good probability that the entire series has sold over the 15 million mark required to make it into the list of all-time bestselling books....

More than Goosebumps?ยง I don't think so... at least not in France. Maybe they said for the USA only, or USA+Canada only... and the page is about all around the world.

We've heard the number 30 million from Scholastic, but who knows? That sounds about right. Animorphs #1 broke 2 million.

I wouldn't say better, but you can't knock goosebumps. Even kids enjoy bad horror stories
As for twilight, well that's cuz fan girls (and boy I suppose ::)) do run the world.
Sad but true

We always knew Animorphs rocked. Dispite, or because of, the more mature themes. It's got a lot of greatness in it. Like anything else, there were ways it could have improved. There are also people who don't like Animorphs for whatever reason, and not just because of the ending or the mature themes. However, it was a great series. No doubt about it.

I grew out of goosebumps. I used to watch fear street by the same author, but those books usually have the same general plot. Read one, and you've read 95% or so of them.

I can understand Twilight. It's everywhere. I cannot have a day without seeing something Twilight related in school. So, uh, yeah. And it only came into culture a year ago.

But not only isn't Animorphs on there, Warriors isn't on there either.

I don't understand that. Animorphs had many books published and it had a large fanbase. Don't get it.  :-\

And Warriors was a bestseller from the start, I'm pretty sure.

Twilight is seriously overhyped. I have honestly never seen the movie or read the books, but what information I have gotten hasn't been enticing.

About Twilight, call that fashion ^^' As for Harry Potter before and Goosebumps when we were younger.
And one of the biggest reason who explain why many people don't like Animorphs is the writing style: too young. Many of my friends think it's childish... They didn't read it enough to see the mature story. Because at the beginning, it's mature, yeah, but not so much... it becomes mature (more and more) later. When you read only the first books or some books written by the ghostwriters, you don't see all the mature things and the books can seem childish.

I get that the writing in Animorphs isn't as good as Harry Potter, even though I much prefer Animorphs. Still, you can't possibly claim that Goosebumps is better written than Animorphs! Goosebumps is one of the most over-rated children's series of all time. And don't get me started on Twilight, that's the most over-rated chick flick of all time!  ::)

I've even got to the point where I think Harry Potter is over-rated. I don't mean that in a bad way, I genuinely like the Harry Potter books, but it's so popular that I kinda feel like it's been blown out of proportion.

And anyone who thinks the Animorphs books are childish hasn't read the later books. The writing quality clearly improves as the series progresses, as the characters get older and wiser and the author's writing improves over time.

Bestseller does not always mean Good and Vice Versa. Example: Twilight is on the list despite being poorly written with extremely flimsy character development.

I agree with Pheonix. As much as I liked Goosebumps, I still liked the earlier Animorphs books better. It does get more mature later on, for better or worse. I wouldn't even say the earlier books were too childish for a children's series.

Exactly Chad. Some people seem to forget that it was written from the POV of teenagers, so it's not supposed to sound like an adult wrote it.

Phoenix, I know, it what I said: when they read only few books, they just don't see how mature is it. And about the writings, it's true it's better and more mature after. In fact, Katherine probably followed the age and maturity of the characters. Visser for example is more mature than the other volume.
And Goosebumps was always a little too childish for me, it's why I preferred Shadow Zone and Spooksville and then Animorphs (I knew them after the 2 first series, but they clearly became my favorite).
I agree with you about Harry Potter. I also like it, the writing is good, better than many other books for kids. But people are too crazy about it...

Agreed. It's alright, but I don't see why people are willing to camp out overnight for the first copy.

Some of my favorite books aren't well known or popular, that doesn't mean they are bad, they just have an unlucky author.

... or at least, less lucky. If I'd be author and sell some books, even if I'm not as rich and famous as Stephen King or JK Rowling, I'd be happy only because some people read my books and like them ;) But maybe everybody don't think like that... of course not...

Goosebumps nearly destroyed the English language. R.L. Stein can't write. His grammar is atrocious. The reason why they sold more was because it wasn't a continuing series. Yes, there were sequels to some, but not many. You can pick up a Goosebumps book at any point and get into the story. They were sorta scary for kids, which is what kids like. Also they had interesting covers that enticed kids to read. Harry Potter I like. Yes J.K. Rowling isn't a great writer but she can tell a really good story. Do people overreact about the books, yes, but I still love all the characters, and I grew up with them. People just like to hate on Harry Potter because its so popular and people get angry because they think people are jumping on the bandwagon. Now, think about this. Animorphs may not have been as popular, but who can you find who has never heard, seen, or read an Animorphs book? Goosebumps may have had interesting covers, but Animorphs always took the cake. The problem was, that you couldn't always just pick it up Animorphs anywhere. There was a whole on-going story. I think it really became about the fans in the end. K.A. may have originally written a story that she liked, but in the end she was writing it knowing who her audience was. You could say the fans had an influence on where it went, which only makes the connection between fans and series more special. On the flip side, that leaves out people who may have just wanted to pick it up. Its kinda what happened to star trek. Originally, everyone watched the original Star Trek, but later only die hard fans watched Next Generation. The connection between Animorphs and Star Trek is pretty similar too. There are a lot of references to it.

Of course that means Rachel (or Ax) is going to come back in the next book. The book following that one will of course be a Cassie book in which the Animorphs are back together and have to travel back in time, like they tend to do in the majority of Mega Morphs, to Save the Whales. Several years later we get Animorphs, The Next Generation where Yeerks now have an Alliance with humans and much better make up. Then after the series is good and dead for sure, J.J. Abrams comes along, after of course never reading animorphs, and makes a series not for the fans but for everybody else to enjoy. The End

sounds like one hell of a movie, JJ sure knows his way around an adaptation

I think we're all forgetting that this is a wikipedia list lol theres only like 50 names on it, I think more than 50 series have broke into the millions, the list is clearly incomplete.
Another explanation is that not all series have an official report of their total sales, so some series were left out because of that.

Animorphs rules all and has probably sold 200 million copies

Disagree.  That title has to go to Twilight.  Harry Potter has character development and an original plot.  Twilight has horribly developed characters, and very little plot at all.
