Title: Daniel Nabet, the child and the soldier
Post by: Venom on June 09, 2008, 06:27:26 PM
alright, im bringing this over, but I probably wont have a chance to continue it after i leave for the summer

so, estelore did this before, and I decided to steal the idea and write a fanfic about my character in the RP Operation MAAS. My opening and thank yous wont be as long as Estelore's were, but here it goes. I'd like to thank Duffman, Estelore, Becht, Xan, Jayne and Demos for participating in the RP and getting me into RAF. This RP will be explaining the events that occurred before Operation MAAS for Daniel Nabet, those of you not familiar with the RP, you may be a tad confused, or better yet, you could read the RP (on the old RAF, heres the link if your interested http://richardsani.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=animorphsroleplaying&num=1202781734&action=display&start=15). But the fanfic really doesn't mention Operation MAAS except for the prologue and when i get to it, the epilogue. Just to explain a few things before I start, Operation MAAS takes place several years (about 18) after the Yeerk invasion, but my story takes place before and during the Yeerk invasion, with a little bit taking place after. On my final note, I feel like my chapters aren't very long, but it's what I feel is right. Enjoy

Prologue

We were outnumbered, out gunned, and out of time. I knew that this was the moment that I was going to die, and I wanted the world to hear my story. I swung my sword at a nearby Hork-Bajir and decapitated him. <Hunter, I don’t think we’re going to make it, we need to retreat,> I said to the hyena beside me. I turned and dashed towards the door, and the hyena followed me. We entered and I barricaded the door with several desks and demorphed from my Hork-Bajir morph. “Hunter,” I said as she demorphed from the hyena, “I need to let the world what happened with my life, go find Higgins and tell him that we need to abort this mission.” She nodded and ran out the door we hadn’t barricaded and I quickly covered it up with the rest of the lone desks. I rushed over to the nearest computer terminal, knowing that I didn’t have much time before the controllers managed to break down the barricade, and began to type.

Chapter 1

I was four years old when it all started, years before any member of my team was even born. My family had just moved to a new home in California and I didn’t know anybody. I sat outside in my sandbox while my parents were welcomed to the neighbourhood by a couple of the neighbours. I looked over and saw my mother laughing with a neighbour and my father talking about barbeques with her husband.
“Hi, my name is Tyler,” a boy my age said, walking into my sandbox. “Will you be my friend?”
“Alright, do you wanna play with me?” I said back to him. He sat down in the sand with me and we were instantly friends, it’s amazing how easily you can make friends when you’re four.
“That’s my mommy and daddy,” Tyler said pointing over at the neighbours talking to my parents, “we moved here when I was just a baby, but I don’t have very many friends.”
“That’s my mommy and daddy over there,” I responded pointing at my parents, “we just moved here, and I don’t know anybody. I wanna go back home so I can see my friends again.” I looked back down and continued playing in the sand.
“Daniel, come back inside, we’re going to go and unpack your things for your room,” my mother called for me from the doorway. I looked over and Tyler’s parents were coming over to take him home too.
“Good bye Tyler,” I said to him as he walked away
“Good bye Daniel,” he replied. I got up and ran towards the house.
Every day that week Tyler and I played together and our parents became close friends.

Several weeks later I wandered past my living room when my parents thought I was asleep and I heard them talking with Tyler’s parents.
“I don’t know Audrey, I really think that our boys are too young. When are they ever going to need that kind of self defence?” I heard my mother ask.
“Sandy, I really don’t think that they are too young. I learned when I was their age, and I’m going to teach Tyler anyway, I just thought it would be a good idea to teach Daniel as well,” Tyler’s dad said.
“Well honey, I think maybe it would be a good idea for Daniel to learn to defend himself. I know that it wasn’t necessary in Kingsbridge, but here in California I think it may be a good idea,” my father said.
“Well, if you think that it’s a good idea Frank, then I’m alright with it. I just think he’s a little bit young. How much will you charge us?”
“Are you kidding Sandy? We won’t charge you. We’ll start teaching them tomorrow, see you then.” I heard them get up and I ran towards my room and pretended to sleep in case my parents decided to come and check up on me.

The next morning my mother came over to wake me up, “Hi Daniel, today we’re going to do something a little bit different. Tyler’s parents are going to teach you how to fight with a sword.” I couldn’t say that I wasn’t surprised to hear this. I think that every four year old boy’s dream is to learn to sword fight. I jumped out of bed and headed outside where my father, Tyler, and his father were standing in front of two long pieces of metal.
“Hello Daniel, as your mother told you, I will be teaching you and Tyler how to swordfight. These are called epées, we will use them at first so that you don’t hurt yourself,” Tyler’s father said to us. Tyler and I each picked up an epée and Tyler’s father began teaching us the basics of sword fighting. And so it was that every day for the next six years, Tyler and I were taught to use a sword.

Chapter 2

When I was 10 years old, Tyler and I had been taking lessons with Tyler’s father for six years and we were approaching out final lesson. We had long since passed using epées and had moved on to actual long swords. Tyler and I were walking back home from school one Friday afternoon and chattering excitedly about our final lesson.
“What do you think dad’s going to teach us?” Tyler asked me
“I dunno, but I have the feeling that it’s going to be some awesome new tactic. I’m really excited. I can’t wait for this lesson, its going to kick butt,” I said, then high-fived Tyler.
When we arrived at home Tyler’s father was waiting for us in his usual spot, but there were no swords in front of him. Tyler and I sat down cross legged on the grass in front of him as usual and waited for his instructions.
“Alright guys, you’ve come a long way in the six years that I’ve taught you. It took my father 10 before I was ready, and it’s only taken you six. I’m very proud of you. However, you guys still aren’t finished. You have one final test. You two are going to fight each other.” He reached into his bag and pulled out two pieces of wood shaped exactly like our individual long swords. “These are weighted exactly the same as your swords, and are rounded so that you wont hurt yourselves. You have until tomorrow at noon, to prepare. Good luck.” He handed each of us a wooden sword and walked back towards his house.
“Well, see you later Daniel,” Tyler said, walking behind his father.
I walked back towards my house with the sword and my head down. I expected another lesson, not to have to fight Tyler. I was bigger than him, and had more force in my swings, but Tyler was quicker and a harder target to hit. I walked into my room and my mother was standing in the kitchen.
“Daniel, the Berensons are coming over for dinner, go clean up your room,” my mother said to me. Great, as if I didn’t have enough to worry about. Steve and Jean Berenson were friends of my parents. They met at a PTA meeting a couple of years before because their older son Tom was in my class. I didn’t like Tom very much because he was a jock and picked on me in class. Their younger son Jake was only seven and he was way too whiney for me and he drove me insane. I sighed and walked over to clean my room.

The night passed by and wasn’t as bad as I had expected it to be. Tom behaved himself, but Jake was still pretty whiney. After they left I practiced with my sword in my back yard with a scarecrow. The sword was rounded enough that it wouldn’t be able to cut the scarecrow, but after several hours I managed to cut off one of his arms. Exhausted I headed back to my room and went to sleep. At nine o’clock the next day I woke up and had a decent breakfast. My mother made me bacon, eggs and toast. After eating I picked up my sword and practiced on the scarecrow until 11:45 when I went over to the front and sat on the grass, waiting for Tyler and his father. Ten minutes later they walked out of their house and headed over to me. Tyler sat next to me and smiled while his father stood in front of us. My parents and Tyler’s mother made their way over to the
“Daniel, Tyler,” Tyler’s father began, “for six years I have trained you in the art of swordplay, you are almost done, but have one final test. Stand up.” We both stood up and grabbed our swords. “On my mark, you two will begin. The first person to be hit by the sword loses. Good luck to both of you. Begin!”
Tyler immediately swung his sword at my chest, but I blocked it. I swung, he blocked. Swing, block. Slice, parry. Stab, dodge. We circled each other in constant motion, trying to hit the other one before the other one hit us. He swung at my feet and I jumped onto his sword. I stumbled but eventually caught my balance and he tried to pull his sword out from under me. I quickly made a slash at him from above. He let go of the sword and rolled away from my attack just in the nick of time. I jumped and slashed at him again but he easily evaded it and picked up his sword. I turned and he quickly made a stab at my chest. I dropped back onto my hands and kicked his legs out from under him. He fell to the ground and I quickly jumped back up to my feet. I made a downward slice at his chest and he parried it. I brought my sword back up and brought it down again. He moved to parry it, but at the last second I brought the sword around and lightly tapped him on his side.
SCREEET!!! Tyler’s father blew his whistle.
“Congratulations Daniel, you beat Tyler. Tyler, you fought well as well. You have both thoroughly impressed me, and I am proud to have taught you,” Tyler’s father said, “I want to give these to you,” he pulled our actual long swords out of his bag, “remember to only use them for self defence.” He then turned around and walked back towards his house. I offered Tyler my hand, he took it and I helped him up.
“Good job Daniel,” he said to me.
“You put up quite a fight,” I said to him.
Tyler grabbed me and pulled me in an embrace. I couldn’t have felt happier than I did at that moment.

Chapter 3

I was 16 years old. A few of my friends from school were hanging out with me and Tyler in Tyler’s basement. Kyle, Michael, Sarah, July, Tyler and me, just chilling in Tyler’s basement doing stupid teenager stuff, smoking pot, drinking Tyler’s dad’s beer, and watching old movies. A knock came from the door at the top of the stairs and Tyler dashed over to the window, opening it to let the smoke out. The rest of us hid the beers and I walked up to the top of the stairs. I opened the door and Tom Berenson walked in. “Hey guys, how’s it hangin’?” he asked as soon as he stepped through the threshold of the door. I walked back to the couches and Tom followed me down the stairs. I still didn’t really like him, pent up frustration from the years of torment, but he was friends with Tyler, so I learned to deal with him. Tom took a seat on the couch right where I had been sitting just moments before. I sighed and moved over to take a seat next to July.
“Hey Tom,” Michael said, “How did it go with Jen at that group?”
“What, you mean the Sharing?” Tom replied, grabbing a beer, “It was awesome, Jen was there and we talked for hours. There were lots of really cool people there, doing really cool things. We played pool, cards, hung out and lots of other really cool stuff.”
It was a normal Saturday with all of my normal friends. If you had told me that this specific Saturday was the catalyst for my future, I wouldn’t have believed you. We hung out for a few more hours doing basically nothing then the group started to dwindle until it was just me, Tom, and Tyler left in the basement.
“Well, I’m off to another meeting of the Sharing,” Tom said to us, “I’m gonna have a great time, you guys should think of joining.”
We shook our heads, and Tom exited the basement and left Tyler and I alone. We decided to head over to the mall to see a movie. Our parents never let us leave home without our swords (except for school), afraid that we’d get into some trouble, so we threw our scabbards over our backs and headed out. We got there a little bit late and saw Tom’s little brother Jake with a few of his friends. We avoided them as they left the mall, talking about the old abandoned construction site and we headed to the theatre. When we got there Tyler’s cell phone rang.
“Hello? Dad, what’s wrong? What? I’m on my way,” Tyler hung up his phone and turned to me, “Mom’s in the hospital, I need to go now.”
The two of us rushed as fast as we could to the hospital to see if Audrey was okay. We arrived in about fifteen minutes and rushed up to Audrey’s room. I waited outside for what seemed like hours while Tyler was in the room with his mother. After a very long time, he immerged with tear stains on his face.
“Mom was hit by a car,” he said sullenly, “they don’t think she’s going to make it.”
“I’m so sorry Tyler,” I really didn’t know what to say to him, “are you alright?”
“AM I ALRIGHT?!” he shouted, “MY MOTHER IS ABOUT TO DIE! DO YOU THINK THAT I’M ALRIGHT?!” He then stormed out of the hospital and I rushed after him.
“Tyler, wait up!” I shouted after him. As if on cue, it started to rain and I chased him through the streets. “Tyler! Stop!” He turned into an alleyway and I followed him. “Tyler, come on buddy, I just want to help you.”
“Help me?” he asked me, “What the **** can you do to help me? My mother is dying!” Tyler then drew his sword from his scabbard and pointed it at me. “Back off Daniel, I don’t want to hurt you!”
I drew my sword right back and pointed it at him. “Tyler, I don’t want to fight you!”
Tyler swung his sword at my arm and I immediately blocked it. “Are you crazy?!” I shouted, “You know these things aren’t toys. You could have killed me.”
“Back off Daniel, go away, now.”
“No, I’m not leaving without you.”
Swing, block. Stab, parry.
“TYLER! ARE YOU INSANE?! STOP IT NOW!”
“Daniel, go away now!”
“Fine Tyler. Stay all alone now, in pain. Don’t let me help you. I’m just going to leave.” I sheathed my sword and headed back home.

Three days went by while Audrey was in the hospital before she passed away. It really hit Tyler hard. For a few days he didn’t leave the house and wouldn’t talk to anybody, but after about a week Tyler came back to school.
“And the boy returns,” I heard a boy say when he walked into our first period history class. The class immediately filled with cheering and applause. Tyler gave a weak smile and sat down next to me.
“Are you alright man?” I asked him, he nodded curtly and opened up his notebook.
After school Kyle, Tom, July and I approached him to see how he was doing. He didn’t speak much but I think we helped cheer him up a little bit.
“Listen, Tyler, I really think that you should give the Sharing a try, it helps get a lot of people through some tough times,” Tom said to him, plugging the Sharing again, as usual. The guy was so insensitive sometimes.
“Yeah thanks, I think I will check it out,” he replied taking a flyer from Tom. Tyler then turned around and walked home.
That night Tyler went to his first meeting of the Sharing. He came back much happier then he had been before, and said that he was already a full member. I didn’t know what that meant at the time, and I wouldn’t know for another couple of years. But when I found out, it changed my life forever.

woot! another awesome chapter. Gave Daniel (and Tyler) quite a bit more depth. Also it was pretty awesome how you had Tom in there.

(i kinda broke up my chapter 4 into two parts, because i wanted to post this, im exhausted and didn't want to write more. so chapter 5 will be a continuation of this)

Chapter 4

I was 18 years old. Tyler hadn’t been around much lately because of the Sharing. They were always doing something weird, like helping a beached whale or cleaning up garbage at the beach. Not my kind of thing. But Tyler was really into it. He kept trying to get me to join and I kept turning him down. It was a regular Friday evening, and as usual, Tyler was a meeting for the Sharing. He told me he’d meet me at the mall afterwards so I was hanging out outside of the food court by myself, munching on some French fries. I noticed Tyler walking towards me over by the GAP. I couldn’t help but think that it was odd that he came from the GAP when it would have been closer for him to come the other way, but I didn’t give it a second thought. I waved at him for a few moments and waited for him to notice me. He saw me, nodded and headed over towards me.
“Hey Dan,” he said and gave me a high five.
“Sup Ty? How was the meeting?” I asked. He looked really stressed.
“Uhh, well it was alright, but we got interrupted by some big ape,” he said and chuckled, “you really should join you know. I need to recruit some more members. Something big is going to happen soon and we need all the help we can get. I would really appreciate it if you came to at least one meeting tomorrow”
As usual Tyler was trying to get me to join the Sharing, and as usual, I wouldn’t budge. “Tyler,” I said, “I really don’t want to keep telling you, I do not want to join the Sharing. There is no way that you can make me join and waste my time. Its really not my-”
“I’ll give you 50 bucks,” he interrupted.
“What time do you want me there,” I answered almost immediately.
We both had a good laugh and he handed me a 50.
The next day Tyler and I headed off to a Sharing meeting. We entered the door to the Sharing building and the first thing that I noticed was that it seemed like a community centre. There were pool tables, air hockey tables, pinball machines, and lots of other fun things. I looked around and saw a few familiar faces. Tom, July, and Kyle were playing a game of pool in the back and as soon as Tyler and I walked in they stopped their game and walked over to us.
“Tyler, you got Nabet to join? I’m surprised we’ve been trying for years and he hasn’t budged,” Tom said.
“Yeah, I had to bribe him,” Tyler replied, resulting in everyone bursting into laughter.
“We have a meeting with Mr. Visser now,” Kyle said to Tyler.
“Alright, lets go,” Tyler answered, “Dan, will you be alright here?” I nodded and he headed off toward a room by one of the pinball machines. Once they stepped through and closed the door, I wandered around for a bit, looking for familiar faces. After a few moments I noticed that Tyler left his scabbard on the floor by the door. That really didn’t seem like something Tyler would do. I decided I would bring it to him. I picked it up and headed toward the door. I knew I probably didn’t belong in the meeting so I made sure that nobody was looking and I opened the door very slowly. I looked inside and hoped that Tyler would see me. When my eyes adjusted to the dim light of the room I saw some very strange things. Tyler was standing at one side of the room, facing me. With their backs to me, were Tom, July, Kyle, a few people I had seen around school and some that I had never met, they looked like they were evaluating him. I looked around a little bit more and had to cover my mouth to stop myself from screaming. In the dark I hadn’t noticed that there were two very large things standing around Tyler, as if keeping guard of him. They were easily 7 feet tall, and were covered in blades. Those things looked mean and like they could do some serious hurt.
<Uklin 168, I am very displeased. Not only did you not manage to find me the Andalite bandits, but you actually allowed them to get in the way of our plans yesterday,> okay, that was weird. I heard a voice, but it was in my head.
“Visser, I am very sorry, they took me by surprise,” Tyler said, nervously.
<I do not want to hear your excuses Uklin.> I saw something walk into my field of vision, between me and Tyler. It was almost like centaur, only it was blue, and had horns, and a really long tail with a very sharp end to it.
<And you think that bringing one potential host will be enough for me to forgive you?>
“No Visser, I’m very-” Tyler stopped speaking. I tried to see why and noticed that the centaur’s tail was wedged into Tyler’s stomach. He pulled it out and walked away.
<Iptu, take this one away.>
“Yes sir,” Kyle said. Tyler coughed up blood and fell to his knees. I didn’t wait, I turned and ran out of the building.
“Hey, you! Stop!” somebody shouted and chased after me. He was holding a weird looking gun and chased me into a nearby alley. He pointed the gun at me and pulled the trigger. A red hot flash went soaring over my head. It missed me by about a foot and I felt the heat from it. the wall behind me had a neat hole in it. I quickly drew my sword and decapitated the man. Self defence. I then ran as far as I could, fell to the floor and began to cry.
“Excuse my young man,” somebody said to me. I looked up and saw that it was an army sergeant, “My name is Carl Stern, and I think that what you need right now, is a helping hand, and we offer that here at the military.” He pointed behind him at the base and grabbed my hand. He helped me up, and led me toward the base. “If you sign here, you will officially be a part, of the united states armed forces.” I looked down at the form he had lain down in front of me. I picked up a pen, and in neat handwriting, wrote down Daniel Nabet.

(so, this was originally intended to be included in chapter 4, but i got too tired last night to continue and wanted to post what i had. so here is chapter 5, enjoy)

Chapter 5
I went home and told my parents about my decision to join the armed forces. When I told them, they burst into tears. I spent the next week at home with my family before I left for the army. Tyler’s father hadn’t left the house since Tyler’s ‘disappearance’ and I didn’t think I could tell anybody what I saw. Who would believe me? And anyway, the whole thing looked like a giant conspiracy, who knew who was in on it, so I hadn’t told a soul. Once the week was over I was called to the military and left my family. I arrived at the base and was assigned a bunk. I dropped all of my stuff off at the bunk and threw on my military uniform. A whistle blew from outside, and I knew that I needed to get out onto the field to meet my sergeant. I jogged out onto the field, my scabbard bouncing against my back with each step I took, and arrived with the rest of my unit.
“Alright soldiers!” the drill sergeant began, “You are all here for the same reason! To protect our country!” The sergeant was a large muscular man who looked like he could have been a body builder if he wasn’t in the army. He passed back and forth and spoke to each one of us.
“You soldier, what is your name?”
“Sir, Steven Rogers Sir!”
“You soldier, what is your name?”
“Sir, Lindsay Wier, Sir!”
“You soldier, what is your name?”
“Daniel Nabet”
“Excuse me soldier? When you speak to me, you will address me as Sir, do I make myself clear?”
“Sir, yes Sir!”
“Now soldier, what is that thing on your back?”
“Sir, it is a long sword Sir!”
“A long sword? Well welcome to the 21st century Soldier! We’re not going to be fighting are enemies with swords, and bows and arrows!”
“Sir, I am actually quite skilled with the sword Sir!”
Everyone in the platoon laughed when I said that. “Skilled with a sword Soldier? I bet that I can fire this air rifle,” he picked up a rifle from a stack behind him, “before you even have a chance to swing.” I smiled. It was a challenge. The sergeant turned and continued to walk down the line.
“Is that a challenge Sir?” I asked smugly. The sergeant turned around and faced me.
“A challenge soldier? I’ll give you a challenge. If you can hit me with that itty bitty sword of yours before I hit you with the compressed air rifle, I’ll give you a perfect score on today’s evaluation. But if I hit you before you hit me, not only do you get a big fat ZERO but every member of this platoon needs to 50 push ups right here right now, and is put on washroom detail for the week,” the sergeant yelled. The rest of the unit were shaking their heads, begging me not to do it, but it was too late. I’d been challenged, and I never back down from a challenge.
“Sir, I accept Sir,” I said quietly.
“Then draw your weapon soldier,” he pulled up his rifle and I drew my sword. “Wier!” the sergeant called and Lindsay stood at attention, “count us off if you would be so kind,” he said.
“3, 2, 1, GO!” she shouted and backed away. The sergeant fired his rifle at me, but I had already moved out of the way. I swung my sword at his leg, and right before I cut into it, I stopped and lightly tapped him with the flat end.
“Sir, I guess this means I win Sir,” I said smugly with my blade still pressed against his leg. The sergeant muttered, gave me a perfect evaluation, and then made us all run laps.
Every day for the entire week, the sergeant challenged me to the same battle, and every day I won, so every day I received a perfect score on my evaluation. After the week was over a general I had seen around the base walked up to me. I saluted.
“At ease. Are you Daniel Nabet?” he asked sternly.
“Sir, yes Sir. How may I be of assistance,” I asked. Luckily I had learned to be respectful of people I actually respected.
“We would like to talk to you over in our office,” he pointed over to one of the off limit buildings. “If you could follow me please.” He walked over to the building and I followed behind him. I entered a room with a large wooden table and several generals sitting around it. There were two empty seats. “Have a seat soldier,” the general said and motioned towards one of the empty chairs. I was nervous, but couldn’t think of anything I’d done wrong. So I didn’t know what could have happened.
“Nabet, it has come to our attention that for every day this week you have received perfect marks on your evaluation. We would like to offer you the chance to join our special operations team,” one of the generals said. He saw my confused expression and continued, “Our special ops team deals with strange and sometimes unnatural occurrences. Do you recall the Zone Ninety-One incident?” I did, Zone Ninety-One was a hidden military base, kind of like California’s own personal Area 51. There had been a terrorist attack on the zone a few years back and they had closed it down. I nodded and the general continued once again, “Well, at Zone Ninety-One, we had what we believed to be a piece of extra terrestrial technology.” My heart skipped a beat. “Now the terrorists, they had destroyed that piece of technology that we had found. Now, we seem to have another issue on our hands. One of our aircraft carriers had some very strange things go on.  People on that boat claim to have seen aliens.”
I gulped and said “Sir, what did they say these aliens looked like?”
Confused the general said, “We received reports of several tall things, reptilian in nature, with blades covering their bodies. And they claim to have seen one large blue dear-like monster with a human torso and a long tail.”
They were the monsters that I had seen just two weeks before. The ones that killed Tyler. I looked up at the general. “Sir, what do you want me to do?”
“I have a feeling that these aliens, if they do exist, are not here for fun. They want a war, so we are going to give them one. I want our best soldiers to be on our special ops team and I think it would be good to have a young genius like you. If you choose to accept this promotion, you begin training at 0600 tomorrow.”
“Sir, who will be my sergeant?”
A familiar voice from behind me spoke up, “I will Nabet.”
I turned around and saw Carl Stern, the sergeant who had found me and brought me to the army.
I looked back to the general, “I’m in.”
“Good, you begin at 0600 tomorrow, at L block. This is all top secret information. Do not share it with anybody,” the general said.
I stood up and walked out of the building with a large smile on my face.

Chapter 6

I was 19 years old. I had been training in the special ops team for a year and had excelled. I was the youngest person on the team by at least two years, and it showed. But I had learned to use all sorts of weapons. I traded in my 4 foot sword for a 9mm. Stern was an excellent sergeant and I had already blown past everyone in the unit. We had yet to hear about another alien encounter, but still we trained every day, for long hours, and with hard work. One morning, at 0600 I arrived to where we usually began our training but found nobody there. I looked around for any of the others, but found nobody. I looked over at the clock and waited until 0615 before I walked over to the mess hall. I walked in and everyone was huddled around the small television that was in the corner of the hall.
“Nabet!” I heard from behind me. I turned toward the voice. It was a general that I had seen only a few times. He had transferred from another base a few weeks before.
“Sir, yes sir!” I responded and saluted.
“I need to speak with you for a moment private!” I followed him to his quarters. “Have a seat soldier!” he gestured toward his bed. I took a seat and looked around the room. In one corner next to a bookshelf was a hot tub filled with brown sludgy water. “Nabet, I hear that you’re the best soldier that this base has!”
“Sir, I’m not so sure if that’s true. I do alright, but I’m not the best,” I responded still looking over at the hot tub. I had a weird feeling about it.
“Nabet, put your head in the hot tub!” the general said to me. I turned toward him and he was aiming the same kind of weapon that had been aimed at me the night Tyler was killed.
“Woah, calm down sir,” I said.
“Your head in the tub, now!” he ordered.
“So your one of them,” I said, thinking back on the conspiracy with the aliens.
“Ah, so you did see the news report. I thought that since I didn’t see you there you had missed it. Yes Nabet, I am a Yeerk,” he said. Yeerk? What the hell was he talking about? “Your head soldier!” he ordered again. I headed toward the pool of sludgy water and got down on my knees. Then with cat-like reflexes, I drew my M9 pistol and fired a bullet between his eyes before he had a chance to squeeze his trigger. I walked over to his body and picked up his weapon. I stepped outside and looked around for others. I saw Stern and ran over to him.
“Nabet! Did you hear what happened?” he asked me quickly.
“Sir, no I did not. But the new general just tried to kill me,” I replied.
“Damn it, he’s one of them.”
“One of who!” I shouted, irritated that I knew less than everyone else.
“A Yeerk. Come to L3, the rest of the team is there. I’ll explain everything.”
I followed him to building L3 and sat down at a table with the rest of the special ops team.
“Alright team,” Stern began, “General Doubleday will be here shortly, but I think that it is time that I debrief you. For over a year we have prepared for a war with aliens that we were not sure actually existed. Well guess what. They do. Many of you have seen the news reports on T.V. the aliens have declared full out war on us. They have better technology then us, and they seem to be able to be anyone. I have found out from a reliable source that these aliens are called Yeerks. In their natural forms, they are little slugs, you wouldn’t think twice about them if you saw one on the street. But these slugs, they enter your brain, and they control you. Completely. They read your minds and behave just like you would. A member of what is known as the ‘Yeerk Peace Movement’ explained all of this to me yesterday. Please give a warm welcome to Kyle Richmon and Iptu 763,” Kyle Richmon walked in and my eyes went wide. It was my friend from high school that I had seen the night Tyler died.
“Everything that Stern is telling you is true. This is a Yeerk,” he opened his palm and put it next to his ear. A large grey slug crawled out of his ear and into his palm. “I now have free will of my body. When I put Iptu back into my ear, he will control me again.” He put the slug back into his ear.
“Traitor!” yelled Felicia, the girl sitting next to me. Kyle lifted the same kind of weapon that I now had concealed in my pocket and fired it at her. She let out a soft scream and fell to the floor.
“I had it set on the lowest setting. She’ll be unconscious for a while, keep her in a safe place for 3 days and watch her. Make sure she goes nowhere near a Yeerk pool.” Kyle then explained what a Yeerk pool was and I just sat there in awe.
General Doubleday then walked through the door. Everyone saluted “At ease soldiers. Now, you men are going to be the first to join my new unit. Up until now, this special operations team had no name. Well guess what. You are all now ATF-1, Alien Task Force One. Congratulations soldiers, we meet in front of the base in one hour to relocate to our new base of operations. Gather your things and don’t be late, we will not be returning.” General Doubleday turned around and walked out of the building. We all left and gathered all of our things. We went over to the new base which was located in a pit carved in a mountain. Very strange looking. When we arrived there were more people there that the general had gathered from other units of other armies. For a few weeks we were trained in new forms of combat and strategy from Doubleday himself. About a month later, we were all in the conference room and Doubleday was showing us a large map of the city that the Yeerks had decided to use as their home. A dragonfly landed on the table. I don’t know why, but I was drawn to it, so I kept looking. Then the dragonfly started to get larger.
“What the…” I said.
“General!” Steve yelled from across the table.
“MP’s! MP’s, on the double,” Kerry shouted.
“Draw your weapons!” Ksenia said.
I looked as the dragonfly grew and changed, and the features that I could almost make out looked a lot like Jake Berenson. “Don’t shoot!” I shouted.
“General Doubleday,” Jake said when he changed completely from the dragonfly, “My name is Jake.”
“Get him!” the general yelled. Several MP’s grabbed him and dragged him off to a holding cell.
“General, this is a mistake!” I heard Jake yell as he was dragged off toward the cell. A few moments later, Jake reappeared as the dragonfly on the table again. Once again he was tackled to the floor and taken to the holding cell. Once again he appeared on the table in front of us.
“General, why don’t you stop being stupid and listen?” he asked. They took him back to the holding cell. For the fourth time in 10 minutes Jake reappeared in front of us.
“All right, Mr. Alien, what have you got to say to me?” General Doubleday asked Jake.
“First: I’m not an alien. I’m a human with alien technology…” Jake continued to speak about how he would hurt the Yeerks and possibly win the war. All he needed was us to provide a diversion.
“He can’t leave here alive!” Colonel Marks yelled. He then looked over at two more soldiers who levelled their weapons along with him. The general argued with them and a wolf jumped out of nowhere and attacked them. The meeting had turned into a battle. An explosion rocked the entire room and Jake had taken a hard hit. He was bleeding badly and a gorilla came and grabbed him. He dragged Jake and Doubleday to safety. Several people ran out of the building and I did as well. I escaped before I succumbed to any real damage. The next day Doubleday called us to a new Headquarters and held us for three days to make sure that we weren’t infested by Yeerks. Those of us that passed the test were brought to a new meeting. Doubleday then explained each of our missions in the coming battle.
Several days later, the battle began. Jake and his band of misfits who could transform into animals, the couple of hundred soldiers from ATF-1, a handful of reptilian aliens called Hork-Bajir that weren’t infested by the Yeerks, and one blue centaur with a long bladed tail called an Andalite against an army of advanced aliens, with countless soldiers, aliens, spaceships, and weapons. This was a suicide mission and we all knew it. We gathered into our divisions and braced ourselves for what would probably be certain death. The pilots all got into their planes and flew off. I lifted my M16 and ran out to battle with my fellow soldiers. Jake needed us to provide a distraction so that he could enter the Yeerk ship and take them out from the inside. It was a genius plan. Unfortunately it meant certain death for us. Several Hork-Bajir charged at us. We all fired our weapons at them as they advanced at us. Lasers fired all around and several soldiers fell. I just kept shooting despite the fact that all of my fellow soldiers were dropping like flies. Out of nowhere several large centipedes came out of the earth and attacked the advancing Yeerks. Now the battle was beginning to turn in our favour. The planes overhead were being destroyed by the Yeerk ships. A Hork-Bajir ran towards me and tackled me toward the ground before I could fire. I struggled to get free but couldn’t. Just one swipe and I was finished. ROAR!!!! A lion charged and knocked the Hork-Bajir off of me.
“Thanks,” I said getting up and putting a bullet in the alien’s head.
<No problem,> the lion responded and we kept fighting.
“Retreat! The kids are on the ship. I repeat, the kids are on the ship, retreat!” I heard from my radio. I ran away and watched the ship fly into the air. It then began firing lasers at all of the animals in the battle. Incinerating the poor kids that only wanted to help the fight. It was disgusting to watch so I headed back into the base. I fell down, and fell asleep. By the time I woke up, the war was over. The kids had succeeded, losing only one of the six that snuck into the ship.

ok, so, this is the first chapter that im writing since i got back from camp... and it sucks. im sorry that the first thing you have to read from me is so bad, but i really dont know how to write a chapter like this, and I needed to get it out of the way. I promise that the next chapter will be better.

Chapter 7

I was 21 years old. The war had been over for two years and everyone was finally used to the idea of aliens all around Earth. There were barely any places you could go anymore without seeing an Andalite or a Hork-Bajir. The morphing technology had been distributed only to a select few soldiers, hand picked by Jake Berenson, I was not one of them. ATF-1 was still around but we now dealt mostly with precautionary training. For the first time in as long as anybody could remember, planet Earth was completely at peace. There were no wars between planets or countries. The Yeerks had done us a favour and brought peace on Earth. Which brings me to where I was, sitting in the mess hall eating breakfast at 0800; we were given a sleep in. Stern approached me and sat across the table. He had a huge smile on his face that gave me a bit of an uneasy feeling.
“Nabet, it’s time for you to go,” he said to me. Go? What did that mean? Was he going to kill me for something? Was I getting discharged?
“Sir?” I asked.
“Nabet, as you can obviously see there are no wars going on now. None. There is also no tension between any countries. It has been decided to send some of our soldiers off to do some good for the world. Nabet, you’re going to a little facility outside of a small town in eastern Canada. You will be there among volunteers and other soldiers who are going to be educating children aged 8 to 16 in basic math, politics and English. This educational facility is experimental and uses a less formal approach to education. You will be in charge of teaching children aged 10 and 11. You have one partner who has been teaching there for several years. You leave in an hour, get your things ready.” He got up and left before I had a chance to say anything. I walked back to my room and pulled all of my things into a suitcase. I walked over to the front of the base and waited for my vehicle. The Hummer arrived and I stepped inside. I stared out the window at the base that had been my home for 3 years as it grew smaller and smaller and eventually vanished from my view completely. Stern kept trying to make conversation in the ride, but I just wasn’t in the mood to talk. The Hummer stopped at an airstrip and I got onto a jet, saluting Stern as he turned around and walked back into the car. I drew in a deep breath and sat down on my seat. After a few hours I arrived in Toronto. Another car, this time a simple Honda, took me to a large building where several people between the ages of 20 and 30 were standing around with bags.
“There will be a bus to pick you up here and take you to the facility with the rest of the teachers,” the driver said as he motioned to the others standing around, “try to find your partner.”
I drew in another deep breath and stepped out of the car. I looked around for the most grumpy looking man I could find, assuming that he would be my partner. I wandered over to a man who looked about 24, he was 6’6’’ and very skinny.
“Hi I’m Daniel Nabet,” I said to him and held out my hand.
“Oh my god! It’s so nice to meet you, I’m Jacob,” he held out his hand, and I shook it.
“I have the 11 year olds, are you partner?” I asked politely.
“No, I’m in charge of the 16s, I think the 11s are Amanda,” he said pointing at a girl sitting by a bag with a few other girls laughing.
“Alright, thanks. I’ll talk to you later Jacob,” I said and headed over to the group of girls. I walked up to the one he had pointed to, she was about 5’8’’ with long dark hair.
“Hi, I’m Daniel,” I said to her.
“Hi Daniel, I’m Amanda. Daniel Nabet, right? I guess we’ll be working together,” she said with a sweet smile. She was devastatingly beautiful, and I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her.
“Humbida” I mumbled.
“What?” she asked politely.
“I said looking forward to it,” I answered and wandered away. I sat down on the stairs outside of the building and waited for the bus. After about 20 minutes the bus arrived and I helped to pack all of the things onto it. I sat at the back, four seats behind Amanda, next to somebody named Mitchell who was the teacher for the 8-9 year olds. Mitchell would try to make small talk, and I feigned interest but the time I was just looking over at Amanda, reading a book a just a few seats in front of me. After a four hour bus ride, we passed through a set of blue gates and arrived at the facility. The place was not at all what I was expecting. I expected something along the lines of a school building, but instead there were three large fields with cabins lining the sides of them, a nice lake, a large mess hall, one small office and a small building behind a basketball court.
“The students sleep in the cabins along the sides there,” Mitchell pointed to one of the fields, “we sleep in those,” he pointed to the cabins in another field, “those cabins are open use for teaching, or you can teach outside. Every night there are plays or games held in there,” he pointed to the building beside the basketball court. The bus stopped and we all unloaded our things and prepared to bring them to our cabins.
“Alright guys, you’ll be in the same cabin as your partner,” Karen, the 23 year old ‘principal’ said to us “Mitchell and Hila, you’re in cabin 12. Ariel and Max, you’re in cabin 13. Daniel and Amanda, you’re in cabin 14,” my heart skipped a beat. I was in the same cabin as Amanda, I was both happy and terrified at the same time. Karen finished reading off the names and people began to bring their bags to their cabins.
“Let me get that for you,” I said to Amanda, and grabbed her bags along with my own.
“Thanks Daniel,” she replied with a smile. I felt my heart jump up into my throat. We brought the bags into cabin 14 and sat and talked for a little while about what we would be teaching the children.
A week later, all of the students arrived on a bus and piled into their cabins. All of the boys from one age group were in one cabin and the girls from one age group were in another. That afternoon, Amanda and I started our first lesson. When Stern said that it was an alternative style to education, he wasn’t lying. Our lesson was on different types of economy. We sat them all in a circle and put a pile of candy in the middle. We then told them to different things to get the candy, all symbolizing different types of economy. Then we had a discussion afterwards. After it was done, Amanda and I went back to the cabin to talk about the results of the lesson.
Four weeks later after all of the kids were in bed, Amanda and I were in our cabin together.
“Daniel, I’m glad that you came here, I feel like we’ve really become good friends,” Amanda said, sitting on my bed beside me.
“Yea, it’s great, I feel like you’re my first real friend since...” I trailed off. I still hadn’t told anybody about Tyler.
“Since what?” she asked.
“Since I watched my best friend get killed,” I said, a single tear running down my face.
“What happened?” she asked me.
I explained everything that happened with Visser Three and the Sharing and Tyler. When I finished Amanda sat closer, and she kissed me. My heart beat faster and I kissed her back, feeling her lips press against mine.
For three months we dated at the educational facility before we both decided to quit. I sent in my letter of resignation to the military, and they accepted allowing me to leave. A week after I quit, Amanda and I got married. Amanda lived in Toronto, so we decided to hold the wedding there. Stern was my best man and gave me the biggest smile I’d ever seen on his face when I said “I do”. My parents were sitting in the front row, and I saw them for the first time in almost 3 years. They were in tears because they were so proud of me. Amanda and I decided to move to California and we bought a house near where I had lived when I was a kid. Nine months later, Amanda had a child, we named her Karen after the principal from the educational facility we had worked at. Finally Amanda and I had a family, we could be happy. Our happy life would finally begin... or so we thought.

Chapter 8

I was 22 years old. With my sword in my hand I was running through an old abandoned park. I looked behind me and hundreds of Hork-Bajir were following close behind me, Dracon beams held tightly in their hands. I looked ahead and nearly ran straight into a Taxxon. I took a quick slash and cut its belly slightly open and kept running. I glanced back and saw it eating itself. I kept running and saw another Taxxon coming from in front of me. I took another swing, but my sword wasn’t in my hand. I looked back again and saw it lying on the ground about 15 meters behind me. Crap. I reached into my pocket to try to grab a handgun. Instead I pulled out a pacifier, my gun no longer in my pocket. Super, I was weaponless. I ran faster than I ever had in my life, dodging around Taxxons and Hork-Bajir. I kept running as fast as I could through the endless park. My foot hit a rock and I fell forward, flat on my face. I rolled over and looked up as the army of Hork-Bajir stood over me, Dracon beams aimed directly at my face.
“Daniel!” I heard someone scream from beside me. I slowly moved my head in the direction of the scream, trying to see who it was. I saw Amanda being held by man with a Dracon beam aimed at her head. The man’s face was blocked by Amanda’s head, so I couldn’t make out who it was.
“Daniel, help me!” she screamed.
“Let her go!” I yelled at the man holding her. He moved his head a little bit so that it was no longer obstructed by Amanda’s.
“Why would I let her go Nabet?” Stern said, pressing the beam against Amanda’s head, “When I can tell how much it hurts you? After all, this is just revenge.” He winked at me and nodded his head. Every Hork-Bajir surrounding me squeezed their triggers at the same time as Stern did. A large flash of light filled my field of vision and I heard Amanda scream, followed by Stern laughing hysterically.
My eyes darted open and I jumped up from off the ground. No, not the ground. My bed. I was in my bed. I looked around. I was in my room, not a park. Amanda was sleeping beside me, not being held by my old army sergeant. My sword was in its scabbard in storage garage with some of our clutter, not on the ground of a random park. There was not an army of Hork-Bajir and Taxxons ready to kill me. I wiped the cold sweat from off my forehead and glanced over at the digital clock on my nightstand. It was 7:26, my alarm would go off in four minutes signalling the time for me to get ready to go to work. I got up and walked off to my bathroom. I got into the shower and cleaned off all of the sweat. When I got out, Amanda was in front of the sink putting her toothbrush away. As soon as I saw her I grabbed her and kissed her.
“You alright honey?” she asked sweetly when I was done.
“Yea,” I replied, “just had a nightmare that’s all.”
“Well, if your finished, go put Karen in her highchair.” I smiled, threw on a suit and grabbed Karen from out of her crib.
“Hey sweetheart,” I said to her softly, “did you have a good sleep?” For a response, I got a gurgle. I smiled and brought her down to the kitchen. I placed her softly in her high chair and poured two bowls of cereal and two glasses of orange juice. A few minutes later, Amanda walked into the kitchen with a yawn, kissed me on the cheek, and sat down in front of one of the bowls of cereal.
“Daniel, I’m going to be going out today while you’re at work. I need to visit my brother Jonathan in the hospital. I’m giving Karen to Ms. Koren from across the street while we’re gone,” Amanda said to me before she started to eat her cereal. I got up from my chair, and kissed Amanda.
“I need to go now, take care honey,” I walked over and kissed Karen on the forehead, “bye sweetheart, have fun at Ms. Koren’s.”
I got into my car and drove over to LLR&S Computer Supplies. I parked in my spot, in front of the large stone curb with my name painted on it. I stepped out of the car and walked through the revolving door into the large glass building. I flashed my ID to the guard and stepped into the elevator.
“Good morning Mr. Nabet,” Steve from lower management said to me.
“Morning Steve,” I said.
I stepped out of the elevator and walked toward my office.
“Good morning Mr. Nabet,” John from advertising said as he headed towards the elevator.
“Morning John,” I said walking past him. I turned the knob on my office door.
“Mr. Nabet, I have you mail here,” Tim said, handing me my mail.
“Thanks Tim,” I said, grabbing my mail from him. I stepped into my office and sat down. I pressed the button on my phone to call my secretary.
“Cheryl, did I get any calls?”
“No Mr. Nabet, but your meeting with Mr. Reinhart has been moved to 2:30,” Cheryl said to me.
“Thanks Cheryl,” I said before hanging up. I picked up some files and shifted through them, looking for the file on Mr. Reinhart. I pulled it out of the cabinet and opened it. Nick Reinhart owned Reinhart Industries, and I was meeting with him to try and convince him to combine with LLR&S. I studied his file for 3 hours before having lunch. After lunch I prepared for my meeting. At 2:25 I walked into the conference room and sat down at the end of the table. At 2:40 Mr. Reinhart walked in.
“Mr. Reinhart, good to see you, how have you been?” I asked him, holding out my hand.
“I’ve been alright Mr. Nabet, and you?” he asked, shaking his hand.
“Can’t complain. Why don’t you take a seat,” I said, gesturing toward a chair. He sat down and for two hours we discussed the benefits of our two companies combining together. Balancing out the pros and cons of the merge. At 5:00, Mr. Reinhart stood up.
“Mr. Nabet, you make a good case, I think I will merge with your company. I just need to speak with your board of directors now. It’s been a pleasure to meet with you, partner,” he said. He shook my hand and headed out the door. I left the conference room and walked into my office. I pressed the button on my phone and called Cheryl.
“Hi Cheryl, I’m heading out now, I’ll see you on Monday,” I said to her.
“Goodbye Mr. Nabet, have a good weekend,” she replied sweetly.
I stepped into my car and drove home. I parked on the street and looked at Ms. Koren’s house. Ms. Koren’s car wasn’t in her driveway. Strange, she probably took Karen to the store or something. I got out of the car and saw Amanda walking through the front door of the house.
“Hi honey!” I shouted from across the street. She looked back at me and smiled. She waved at me.
“Hi Dan-” she was cut off by a huge explosion completely demolishing our house and everything within a 10 meter radius of our house, ending approximately 50cm from where I was standing. I looked up and saw a Bug Fighter flying overhead, with its Dracon cannon still hot from the blast.
“AMANDA!!!!!” I shouted and ran towards the scorched earth that used to be our house. “AMANDA!!!!!” I screamed, falling to my knees exactly where she had been just seconds before.

Chapter 9

“AMANDA!!!” I screamed again feeling the ash beneath my hands.
“Get up, and get ready for infestation,” a voice said from behind me. I turned and saw a man aiming a Dracon beam at me.
“You killed my wife,” I said, standing up.
“Put your hands behind your head,” he said calmly.
“YOU KILLED MY WIFE!!!” I screamed and punched the man in the face. He wasn’t expecting it, so he fell back a little bit. I used this time to hit the Dracon beam out of his hand. It fell to the ground and I kicked the man in the face as hard as I could. He dropped to the floor and I kicked him again for good measure. I picked up the Dracon beam from the ground, wiped the sweat from my eyes, and put it to the highest setting. I aimed the beam at the over head Bug Fighter and with perfect precision I fired at the engine, completely destroying it. The Bug Fighter fell to the ground with a loud crash and exploded 30 meters from me. I got into my car and drove toward my storage garage. I opened it, and made my way through the mountains of old CDs, lawn mowers, old tables, and boxes until I found what I was looking for. I opened the box labelled ‘Weapons’ and pulled out my scabbard. I kissed it and through it over my shoulder. I took two Glock 22s out of the box and put them in my pocket. I took the M16 and put it in a holster around my waist. I put a belt of hand grenades on, and held my newly acquired Dracon beam. Let them come, I’d be ready. I dropped my suit jacket to the floor and ripped the arms off my shirt. I needed mobility. I stepped outside and walked through the streets. I noticed two Hork-Bajir holding a young boy down. I fired. The young boy was cowering in fear while two Hork-Bajir smouldered beside him. I kept walking and saw a band of Taxxons coming up a hill, I fired at one and watched the others eat him. I then repeated the process until there was only one left. I tried to fire, but the Dracon beam was out of power. I threw it aside and picked up my M16. I put a neat hole in the Taxxon’s upper body and walked away as it attempted to eat itself. I saw a human controller walk towards me with a Dracon beam in his hand. I put a hole between his eyes. I walked over and picked up his cell phone. I called Ms. Koren, hoping to get in touch with her to see if Karen was alright. There was no answer. I screamed up at the sky, holstered my M16 and ran. I ran into a park and looked behind me. A dozen or so Hork-Bajir were behind me, Dracon beams levelled. I took a grenade, pulled the pin, and threw it at the crowd of aliens behind me. I managed to take out half of them and kept running. I drew my sword and ran. I decapitated a Hork-Bajir that popped out from behind a slide in front of me and kept running. I ran right into someone and we both fell to the ground. I looked over and saw an M16 on the ground next to my longsword. I stood up quickly, grabbed the sword and threw the M16 to the person on the ground. He lay face down, and I couldn’t make out his face, but his uniform was army.
“Pick up your weapon and help me!” I yelled at him, as the Hork-Bajir approached.
“If I recall correctly, I was the one who gave you orders,” the man said standing up. It was Stern. The words ‘after all, this is just revenge’ flashed through my head. I ignored it and held my sword tightly in my hand. He picked up his rifle and stood by my side.
“Just like old times, eh Nabet?” he said smiling. I didn’t smile, my wife was dead and my daughter was missing, I didn’t think I would ever smile again. The Hork-Bajir came closer and Stern started firing. I ran forward and slashed wildly at the mass of scales and blades. After only 30 seconds, the Hork-Bajir were all dead.
“Well Nabet,” Stern said, lowering his M16, “I think we may need you back at ATF-1. It seems that those kids weren’t as thorough as we had all thought.”
I followed Stern back to the base and walked through the familiar area. Only once I passed the security gate did I sheath my sword. Stern took me to a conference room with the rest of ATF-1 sitting around. When I entered they all clapped. I raised my hand to shush them and sat down.
“The Yeerks are back,” Stern said, “and this time we don’t have a bunch of kids to help us fight. One of them is dead, four are missing, and one wants nothing more to do with the war. What this means soldiers, is that we’re back. We need to stop the approaching aliens. We need to send these god damn slugs back to where they came from. We need to show them that this is our planet, and they can’t just take it from us.”
Everyone in the room started cheering. They were optimistic. Something about watching everything that ever mattered to you disappear before your eyes takes all the optimism from your mind. I sat and listened to Stern describe the plan to get the Yeerks first out of our city, then the rest of the planet. I sat and listened, not really paying attention, the last moments with Amanda racing through my mind over and over again. After explaining the plan, Stern stood up.
“Get a good night sleep tonight soldiers, tomorrow is a big day,” he said. Everyone stood up and headed towards their rooms. I walked to the T.V. in the mess hall and turned on the news. The news anchor was sombre and sitting beside a bottle of whiskey, taking shots every couple of minutes. He was talking about the reinvasion before he began reading a list of casualties. Amanda was one of them. When he was finished he pressed his finger against his ear.
“The Yeerks have taken another life,” he said, “the main street bridge was shot down, killing 50 people.” He then read off the list of people killed on the bridge. The last name said was Janice Koren. My heart sank even deeper into my chest. Karen was dead. I switched off the T.V. and walked to my bunk. I didn’t sleep at all that night, my mind replaying Amanda’s death over and over again. At 0530 everyone got out of bed, showered and headed to our meeting spot. Stern was standing there, in front of a large pile of weapons.
“Alright soldiers,” he said, “it’s time to send these sons of ****es back to the stars. Grab an M16 and a Shredder and hit the streets. Eliminate any and all controllers you see. Use deadly force. If you aren’t sure about someone, kill them anyway. This is not a time to be a hero, this is a time to be a soldier. Wars aren’t won with hugs and kisses, they’re won with death and destruction.” Stern handed everyone an M16 and a Shredder except for me and someone else in the group named Alyssa. “Alright everyone, go out there and kill some Yeerks! Show them that this is our planet and they won’t take it without a fight!” everybody cheered again, “Nabet, Giddings, I need to speak with you in my office please,” he said, gesturing for us to follow him. Everybody in ATF-1 left the base screaming, holding their weapons at the ready except for Alyssa and me. We followed Stern to his office and he shut the door.
“Alright, you two are the best soldiers we have in this unit, which means that you’re going to have a special weapon. We just got the authorization to give this out, but only three people per base are allowed to have it. You two and General Doubleday are the only people here who will have this, even I won’t.” Stern then used a key to open a small closet, turned the tumbler on a safe inside, opened it, pulled out a small box, punched in a code, opened the box, and bulled out a small blue cube. “This is called an Escafil Device. This will grant you the same powers that the Animorphs had, allowing you to become any animal that you touch. Use this power wisely.”
Alyssa and I stood, jaws open and eyes wide.
“You’re giving us the power to morph?” Alyssa asked.
“That is correct,” General Doubleday said, walking into the room, “each of you two touch one end of the cube.” We did and felt a small shock. Doubleday then explained how to acquire morphs and how to become them.
“Alright you two,” Stern said once Doubleday had left the office with the Escafil device, “we’re taking a trip to the zoo.” The three of us got into a jeep and drove to The Gardens. Stern flashed his military ID and they were expecting us. Somebody got into the jeep with us and directed the driver to behind the animal cages.
“We have flyers behind here, nighters are over there, fighters are in those rooms there, don’t go in without me, and finally divers are over there,” she had obviously dealt with morphers before. Alyssa went first, she got a falcon, a gorilla, a dolphin, and a bat. Then it was my turn. I first went into the aviary and the tour guide tranked a bald eagle and a snowy owl for me and I acquired them. Next I went into the wonders of the deep sea exhibit and repeated the process for a great white. Then finally I acquired a lion. Alyssa and I were instructed to morph our flyers, fly into the city and look for controllers, then to demorph, morph into a fighter, and take them out. This was more a training exercise then actually hurting the Yeerks. Stern wanted us to get used to our new power. So I looked over at Alyssa, she smiled at me, and began to shrink. I concentrated on the eagle and felt itchy all over. I looked at my arm and saw a strange pattern begin to form. Feathers erupted from the pattern and I began to shrink. I felt my lips and nose shoot out then harden. My legs grew hard and my feet became talons. And then I had become a bald eagle. I tried to speak, but all that came out was a weird screech.
<Nabet, this is amazing. Just think what you want to say and it happens. It’s so cool!> Alyssa said to me.
I tried it, <Hello?>
“Alright soldiers, now that you’ve both figured out thought speech you need to go out there and find trouble, both of your morphs have very keen eyes and it shouldn’t be any trouble to find anything at all. Good luck and remember, two hours,” Stern said. He then stepped into the jeep and drove off.
<Uh, Alyssa, do you know how to fly?> I asked her.
<No, but I think that the bird does. If you let the bird take over I think that we’ll be ok. At least, that’s what I’ve heard,> she replied. She then flapped her wings and took off into the air. <OH MY GOD, THIS IS AMAZING!> she screamed.
I let my mind go and waited for the eagle to take over. Almost immediately my wings began flapping and I took off into the air. I flew beside her and we soared over the city looking for controllers. After several minutes we saw a group of controllers attacking a soldier from ATF-1. We landed nearby, demorphed and remorphed into our fighters. A gorilla and a lion with a scabbard on its back then emerged from an alley and charged at the controllers.
“What the?” one of the controllers said before I mauled his face off. I jumped to one of the Hork-Bajir and ripped into its stomach.
<This is for Amanda you sons of ****es!> I yelled, attacking all the controllers that Alyssa wasn’t punching in the face with her massive gorilla fists. Eventually all the controllers were dead.
<Are you alright Rick?> I asked the soldier lying on the ground. He didn’t respond. I turned him over with my paw and his gaze was completely blank. He was dead.
<He’s dead, let’s keep going,> I said to Alyssa. She nodded her big gorilla head and we patrolled the streets.
For two months ATF-1 patrolled the streets eliminating the controllers from the city until none remained. Against all odds we took out all of the controllers that were in the city, and other cities followed suit and soon there were no controllers anywhere in North America.
ATF-1 had moved to a new base in Nevada. We were now dealing with controllers in other parts of the world. Sending planes filled with soldiers to different cities that were overrun with Yeerks and taking them out. It was tough work, and we had many casualties. Stern, Alyssa, Bill, and I were sitting at a conference table watching the monitor as somebody was debriefing us on a particular village in Africa.
“Sir, the village has more Yeerks than it does humans,” the man on the monitor said to us, “by my calculations, the village is 75% controllers, 15% terrorists in league with the Yeerks, and 10% civilian. If we don’t act fast, they will take over the rest of the village and spread.”
“Thank you soldier,” Stern said, “stand by for orders” he shut off the monitor.
“Sir, the village needs to be dealt with,” I said, “I don’t think that there is enough time for us to send a team of soldiers there and take them out before they spread. I believe that a tactical nuclear strike is our only option.” Losing my wife and daughter had made me cold, but I was thinking rationally and that was truly our only option.
“Nabet, we can’t nuke the village. There are civilians there. My superiors would have my head, not to mention the moral issues with it,” Stern said.
“Sir, it’s our only option.”
“I said no soldier. I need to go for a walk and think about this,” Stern said, standing up. He walked out of the room and I followed him. We entered his office and were alone.
“Sir, what do you think is the alternative, you and I both know that this is our only choice. We can’t let the Yeerks spread any more. This would show them that we were serious, that we mean business. You said so yourself wars aren’t won with hugs and kisses, they’re won with death and destruction.”
“Nabet! We aren’t discussing this! I will send a jet with two dozen soldiers tomorrow. They will take out the Yeerks.”
“I’m sorry Carl,” I said to him.
“What?” he asked right before I hit him on the head with the hilt of my sword. He instantly fell unconscious. I took his clothes and shoved him under his desk. I placed my hand on his forehead and concentrated on him. I walked away from the desk and focused on him. I felt the changes begin. My muscles grew a little bit and I shrank a few inches. My hair grew longer and my nose grew a little bit shorter. I threw on Stern’s clothes and walked back into the conference room.
“Soldier,” I said to Bill in a voice that was not my own, “call him back, I’ve made my decision.”
Bill punched in a few numbers on the monitor and the soldier came back on the screen.
“Get out of the village now, you have 5 minutes before I send out a tactical nuke.” I said to him. He swallowed hard and nodded. The monitor turned off and I walked to the war room. I placed my thumb on the scanner and the button for the nuke surfaced on the control panel. I imputed the coordinates and waited until 5 minutes were up. Once they were up I took a deep breath and pressed the button. May god have mercy on their souls.

Mm, my favorite chapter so far. Very fast paced in the beginning, but I think you probably should have slowed it down a bit around the time Stern tells everyone that the yeerks are back, after that it seems kinda rushed. But awesome stuff, Daniel!! Really great too see all this insight into Nabet's past. The fic was a great idea. I wish we would start up OMAAS again, I miss it. :(

(i realized that i wrote the epilogue for this story but never posted it. lol
well here it is, the startling conclusion about 6 months late)

Epilogue

I finished typing and hit send, sending it to the only person I knew that I could trust. As soon as the file had sent, the door burst open and a mob of Hork-Bajir and human controllers burst into the room. I held my sword at the ready. I knew I had no chance, I would be dead in seconds. I was alone. Just like every other time in my life, I was alone. I screamed and charged, morphing as I ran. Blades shot up through my body and reptilian scales started forming on my skin. Just as I entered the mob of controllers, swinging my sword frantically, the other barricade burst open. I turned and looked with the rest of the controllers, completing the morph. A large gorilla was standing with the door in its hands. At his sides were a hyena, a tiger, a cobra, a girl with a gun, and a giant mutant called the Juggernaught. I wasn’t alone, not anymore. I grinned with my Hork-Bajir mouth and slashed at all of the controllers around. The animals and the Juggernaught all charged into the mob of controllers. Leia stood to the side and fired on them with her gun. There’s nothing like having your friends come out to help you. I slashed my sword and blades beside Higgins punching with ham sized fists, Hunter biting into controllers then laughing hysterically with her hyena laugh, Stone clawing and biting into them, Poison injecting them all with venom, and Juggernaught ripping them apart. I took down the last Hork-Bajir with a quick slash and demorphed. The rest of my team was injured, but not dead. They all demorphed their injuries as well. I sheathed my sword and smiled.

“Abort the mission?” Higgins said with a smirk, “why would we do something like that?”

I laughed and we left the room. We knew that we couldn’t leave the facility from the front door, so we walked to the nearest window. One by one my team morphed birds and flew out the window, with the exception of Leia who just jumped out of the window, rolling when she landed 20 feet down. I was the last one and started focusing on the eagle. Before I felt the changes begin I heard footsteps from behind me. I turned quickly, and with quick reflexes I drew my sword and held it next to their neck. I quickly pulled it away when I saw who it was. It was the man that I had just sent my story to, standing with a teenage girl with long brown hair.

“Hi Daniel, I think this is what you were here for,” Tyler said, handing me a pack of disks.

“Thanks Tyler,” I said. I threw the disks down to Leia, who caught them with ease.

“Daniel,” Tyler said to me, “I think that there’s someone who wants to meet you.” He gestured toward the teenage girl.

She flashed me a large smile, “Hello daddy,” she said.
