Title: If KA had completely abandoned Animorphs...
Post by: Hylian Dan on December 31, 2008, 03:12:25 AM
We know that for the latter half of Animorphs, KA had ghost writers take care of the manuscripts while she provided the outlines. She continued steering the storyline of the series, and she still wrote a handful of the books herself. Eventually she chose to let her contract expire and she created the final arc.

But what would have happened if somewhere in the 30s/40s she had walked away completely, let Scholastic make all decisions about the contract, and passed the story off to other writers, without providing them outlines? How many books would be written? What would the ending be like? Would the books eventually end abruptly with no ending, like a cancelled TV show? How would the series degenerate, or would it have been improved? Would you have stuck with it?

I think the books would have continued on for a while like they did from 36 to 44, where the series was often spinning its wheels. The main plot would rarely be progressed, and the tone of the books would dry up, losing the darkness, complexity and humor. We'd get a bunch of simplified, stand alone, bubble-gum adventures. I was really worried that that's what Animorphs was going to turn into when I was reading about Atlantis, Austrailia, the Magic School Bus, and the Buffa-human. Recycled plots, loss of nuance in the characterization, villains that seem to die but always make a comeback, jump-the-shark moments. I was worried that the series was fated to be unimaginatively milked until interest dried up, at which point the books would end abruptly with no resolution. I think I would have eventually stopped reading, if that had happened.

Then she'd have a lot of angry souls haunting her night.

There's one time when I was so afraid things would turn up like so, I even considered whether this series was going to be worthy my time.

I also thought sometimes that the ghostwriters's books was a little too much "little stories about Animorphs characters", kind of fanfictions... So I was glad when I read the last books, who were important in the story.

The last books...most of them were never translated in French  >:(  I was so disgusted I wanted to choke a few people at Gallimard !

Tocade, I'm thinking about translate them in French and put them on my Website (even the last 2 books, because they didn't put the deaths of the new Animorphs). Same for the 7 last Remnants books. If you wanna help me with...
It's true that Gallimard (the French editor) said "Nothing interesting in the books we didn't translated, not important for the story". That was a lie, of course! Italian editors said the same about the last 2 books (they didn't translated the end!!).
Sorry for the off-topic.

Same shoes we are in.
I only got 27 books translated into Indonesian. That sucked really big time.

Yeah... Did you already think about translate them in Indonesian? It'll be great if we propose here, on RAF, different languages. Scanning the translated, translate the others...
Did you have Remnants and Everworld translated in Indonesian??

I ordered them on amazon but at the time my English was sooo ****ty that I couldn't read them  :'( :'(
I'd be glad to help you ! But don't ask me to be a fast translator ^^ I like perfection and generally I don't end the works I start because of that  :( And I don't know when I would have time and when YOU would have time^^

Sorry for the  off-topic ( again  :-[ )

If she hadn't been watching the Ghostwriters as much as she did, it would have degenerated. Of course, I still read every book, but eventually I would have gotten tired of it. It's good that it didn't wind up becoming a series of stand alone adventures that never ended. Or just stop abruptly without some closure to the war.

On the other hand, the ghostriers didn't do as good a job with the characters as KA did in the beginning. i don't mind that the series ended. Just that it ended badly. Though I would still like a sequel series made. Like having them help the Free Hork-Bajir, or going off into space to fight on distant planets. Something. However, it's hard to make a masterpiece when you're not into what you're writing. Hence the ghostwriters.

I'd also like to know more about the other battles everywhere in space, and what happened to the Yeerks after...
