Why did it take the Yeerks so long to discover the true nature of the Animorphs?

Mostly because Visser Three doesn't listen to his subordinates very well. Controllers started talking about the possibility back in book 4, but there wasn't much they could do about it with a boss that decapitates people when he's the least bit displeased.
