I always thought about a month since they came out each month. Could be wrong though.

Originally they did missions on the weekend, unless something particular came up. Later in the series they did thing more often.

Cue me not be productive for the rest of the day
A while back while reading through I charted out days given in each book, taking detailed notes in efforts to draw out the calendar of Animorphs. In was a cluster***. While they try to do most there stuff of weekends, they often have to work around school, sometimes delay things weeks at a time, and there where various points where they either had things crammed back to back, or oddly uneventful. Add in the fact that the war was all of 3 years, some books no specific days of the week came up, and slights like books where they are in school 6 days in a row, and the refuse to acknowledge the passing from middle school to high school or summer breaks, the time between each book varies considerably. Eventually I'll up load what I worked out, somewhere someday, but for now, here's a breakdown of how I spaced the Animorphs books. Nothing official of course, but I'd wage there's not many better
1 ends on a Tuesday Morning,
2 Starts on a Sunday, I presume the next sunday
3 also on a Sunday, about a week after 2 ends
4 again, about one week after 3
5 I believe starts just a day later, though this is a few days after they rescue Ax
6 a bit less than a week after 5
7 just a few days after 6
8 is about 2 weeks after the kandrona in 7 is destroyed-remember MM1 is b/w 7 & 8
9 4 days after 8
10 a week later
11 is guess, not enough details, but I came up with about 5 days after 10
12 again 5 days after the previous
13 6 days later
14 just 2 days later
15 just after 14 wraps
16 about 4 days later
17 a lot of fluff at the end of 16 confuses things, I ultimately concluded this one begins some 3.5 weeks after 16, but it could be less.
18 about a month after 7 based on math in the series, but I doubt it's that extreme.
19 A full 2 months laters, but again this was to fit the series into 3 years. Could be more or less
20 I believe this was about a few days after Cassie found Karen free
21 Right after 20
22 Right after 21
23 Just under 3 weeks later
24 Again about 3 weeks
25 Totally guessing, but about 3 weeks later
26 I really got into the 3 week thing
27 2 weeks later. Much better
28 Great, now 3.5 weeks
29 close to 4 weeks
30 more 3.5
31 About 2 weeks
32 Spot on 3 again
33 Just 2 days later. That can't be right
34 Just under 3 weeks after
35 And 3.5 Theme- Now a note here this book was filled with fluff, after the Yeerk fighting, we had 2 weeks later till the wedding, and then comes the call that kicks off Visser a few days later, so the actual contents of this book cover about a month.
36 And this takes place a full month after Visser (& therefore 35) end
37 About a week and a half. Much better
38 And 3.5
39 Well this was 2.5 weeks
40 This 3.5 is starting to bug me
41 A full month and a week. Now MM4 falls b/w them, but still, that's a hell of a spacing
42 This was a full month later too.
43 3.5 weeks
44 3 weeks even
45 Just shy of a month later. This book covers a bit more than battles such that
46 Same day 45 ends
47 A week and half after averting WWIII
48 A week and half after that
49 Maybe a week, give or take a few days
50 Some 4 or 5 days after 49 ends.
51 I forced this to be 4 days after 50, but I have my suspicions on that, it's probably less
52 Again, fitted to be about 3 days later
53 The next day if not the day 52 ends.
54 Right were 53 stops.
TL;DR Using nerd logic, most the early books have a space of about a week in between them story wise, some more some less. In the middle we started spacing it out to about a month, and by then end we were in a crunch for a few days or less between every story.

Thanks for that info. I didn't really expect them to go near a month beteen missions. I can understand doing things on weekends, but why waste precious weekends not going on missions?
Tobias does talk about it being dry sometimes. That is about as good an indicator of summer as anything.

If the series was only 3 years does that mean that 54 starts in 1999 (before the time skip) instead of 2001?

I'd also imagine that there might be some missions we're not seeing during some of the wider gaps. Missions that were overall uneventful and didn't effect things much. (Probably mostly recon stuff, a few light skirmishes, that sort of thing)

That's a good thought. Tobias even tells another character once that he does a lot of recon in his spare time. I think he was spying potential Yeerk Pool entrances.

The books are presented in character as reports by the Animorphs (note the we can't tell you who we are shtick), and I suppose sometimes there would be no book because they have nothing to report. For instance, I figure there would be a lot of lying low.

Also with noting that Jake was trying out for basketball in book 1, setting it in October or thereabouts.
This also fits with the above timeline and the fact they went to see a Star Trek movie (I'm 1996, it had to have been First contact) in book 8

now that's an interesting point: Just to sync up a bit with the first one's release, I figured to place the start of things in June. Didn't even consider how middle school basketball try outs could inform time of year. Still, 8 was about 4 months after 1- so says me- so if it does start in October then they would have gone to the film in February 97.
I don't know start treak, would it still have been in theaters that long

If I understood your time line correctly, 8 would start about 1.5 months after 8, putting it in late November or early December, right around the time the movie hit theaters.

Book 1 to 2: 5 days
Book 2 to 3: 7 days
Book 3 to 4: ~7 days
Book 4 to 5: 1 day
Book 5 to 6: < 7 days
Book 6 to 7: few days (assumed 3)
Book 7 to 8: ~14 days
5 + 7+ 7 + 1 + 7 + 3 + 14 = 44 days = ~6 weeks

ah, no. what I have up there is literally the time between books alone. But the books themselves still take up days. Book 1 for example starts on a Friday, ends on a Monday, then the next Sunday book 2 starts, takes place over for a week, and then another seven days later 3 begins and last for another week, and then a week off before 4 etc, so it would be a few months, not weeks.
Though looking at my notes, I put 6 in a different place than I thought, so maybe 8 is closer to 3 months after the start.

I find this source fairly reliable, since the gross income matches that posted on IMDB.
On the week of January 3rd, ST: First Contact was shown in 1001 theaters. The next week, it was shown in 607. That's a 39% decrease. By the end of January it was showing in 243 theaters. It is possible they went to see the movie in January, though increasingly unlikely past the first week.
Of course, it is possible BB trials were held a month earlier than the norm. It is also possible that K.A. Applegates didn't pay that much attention to actual dates, and the fact that BB trials and the ST movie release dates fitting are a coincidence. And we can always go the route that dates were changed to protect their identities ;)
That being said, I would love to see your timeline and/or your notes. I'm in the planning stages of writing an Animorphs/Harry Potter crossover and am trying to place about where in the Animorph books June 1998 (a month after the defeat of Voldemort in the Harry Potter chronology) lies.

Hate to necromance, but someone reminded me of this thread, and just noticed this post and can't help but find something funny.
He had decades as a Ketran, decades, maybe centuries or more (can't remember, too lazy to look with father) when around the galaxy enough times to pass generations of various species, probably decades to centuries at least fighting Crayak (probably says millenia in 26, but whatever), the adult life of an Andalite, more fighting Crayak, however long in a black hole alone, at a time where dinosaurs walked the earth, and has been there with Crayak ever since, so definitely long ass time.
But what just caught me is that TEC is the story he told to Rachel. A story he told her from outside time. Did he place it all in her head in an instant? Tell her over hours? Show her over a "time" equivalent to the eras through which he lived it?
How long did telling that story actually take, even though it took no time at all? Mind. Blown.

There was an earlier case where he stopped everything around the Animorphs in order to have a private conversation with them, which is what he likely did for Rachel. So it may have taken a while, but in reality it was just an instant.

That's very interesting. The answer is that there is no a clear time to set the events.
I did this scheme, form 1 to 35, I have to finish it :
From 1 to 4 : 5 weeks *
4 to 5 : one week more
From 5 to 8 : two more weeks
8 to 10 : ??
10 to 12 : less than a month
From 6 to 14 : about 2 months
From 15 to 18 : no more than 2 months
20,21, 22 : 6 days
23 : 6 days
24 : one day
25 : 4-5 days
26 : no time
27 : 2 days
28 : 2-3 days
29 : more than 3 days
30 : about 9 days
31 : 3 days
33 : 2-3 days
34 : more than 4 days
35 : more than 2 weeks
* #1 is from Friday night to Tuesday morning. In #2 Rachel says that Tobias is a hawk "from more than a week". In #4 Ax says that he's sending messages from "weeks" not "months" so it's probably more than a month but less than two months.
