Title: How should Crayak sound?
Post by: Darth Revan on November 09, 2011, 07:58:10 PM
Since Crayak is this big, evil, god-like character  and I'm sure everyone has a different vision for how he sounds, I figured I'd get your input as to what you thought he should sound like.

I kinda envisioned his voice to be like The Gravemind from HALO, deep, gravel-ly, and maybe a bit misty. Not as slow, or distorted, but deep and somewhat creepy.

What are your thoughts?

I think that Guy will be doing any voice effects in post-production, so it's not something that you need to worry about while recording. All line should just be recorded as normal speech. :)

However, yeah, that's kind of how I imagine it to sound as well.

Hmm, I always thought the Crayak sounded like the voice was reduced in pitch on purpose... but maybe 'cause I recently watched ImprovEverywhere's MP3 experiments and it has an omnipotent voice as a guy with his pitch reduced. XD

but seriously, I never really thought about what the Crayak would sound like. When I read the books the voice reading the book would sound like.. hmm...I dunno how to explain it but I know how it works. You reverse the audio, add a reverb then reverse it back so the "echo" plays first. It was used in the Protoss units in Starcraft. XD Why I know this? A friend told me back in the day when Starcraft was big. =P

On another note I heard somewhere you did the lines for the other characters. Do we get to hear a sample? *puppy dog eyes*

I'm not going to do any layering effects, I just mean should the tone be deep and gravely with a mist-like sound? I'm doing four characters. I'm not going to read them as normal for each and every one. They have different tones, different speech patterns, they have to sound different.

Edit:

My 14,000th post! Woot!

Gravelly would be good i think. I'll probably use some sort of chorus/reverb in the end.  Also, I'd figure slow. Crayak has all the time in the world, he wouldn't need to rush

Sweet thanks for the input. I'll do some test lines and see if I can post some of them along with some previews of Drode.

Unfortunately to post previews, they'll have to be in MP3 format. But I'll see what I can do tonight for you guys.

Well, last night was a bust, family and friends occupied my night. I'll get some samples in though.

So after months of finding time and inspiration, I finally tried my hand at making the Crayak.

Here's my attempt. How does it sound?

Freakin nailed it, I'd say. Seriously, that works really well. The one thing is I would like to have a dry copy (hopefully you still have one) for when I do the editing, mostly for consistency's sake. That's also why I'm doing all the thought-speech effects myself. One effect that I'm thinking of is having several copies slightly time- and pitch-shifted layered around each other, to give it a sort of "We are Legion" feel.

Sure. I have the original recordings still on file. It doesn't sound half as impressive though. ;D

Every time I listen to it, I give myself chills.

Thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to finish editing the clips soon.
