Title: Come on, admit it.......
Post by: Animorphsjake on July 22, 2008, 12:06:52 AM
Who here doesnt agree that Tobias's whining about how he's a hawk and a boy and all that junk isnt annyoing! I MEAN COME ON!!!!! We get it! Your sad, but there is more important things to do then imforming us about how your sad. I feel sorry for tobias, and I think he's cool, but it got annoying into  his third book.  I only read Tobias's books to see how he and rachel are coming along, I cant get into them that much. I just think in the beggining books hes annoying but later on hes not as annoying.

But as some of you said, every character has thier "annoying" moments. SO I dont mean JUST tobias, im saying thats the one I think who is. Kinda a pointless topic, dont ya think?

uh...wait are you saying it's annoying or it's not annoying? if former I disagree, if latter I agree.

I hated Tobias' moping. He's my 2nd least favorite Animorph because of it

I'm glad we agree on something.

Tobias did seem to get picked on a lot by K.A to have us pity him, and it did get annoying at times, but it was understandable for his character to be written that way given the circumstances.

I actually never found Tobias that annoying. Yeah, he talked about being a bird a lot, but for the most part he had actually accepted it. I mean, okay, in book 3 he whined a LOT about it, but it was still new to him, thus completely understandable.

I actually found that Marco bringing up his mum so much in the first 5 books was more annoying... I mean, he had two years to get over it, and he still hadn't. (Once he found out she was Visser One, it's fine though, because I think ANYONE would be upset about that) But before that? *shrugs* I mean, I know loosing a parent is hard; I've been there. But 2 years later, he should have at least moved on enough to not have his voice break every time he mentions her.

And while we're talking about characters not moving on, how about Jake's constant "I have to get Tom back!" thing? Or Cassie's constant moral battles? Ax missing home? Rachel's being in love with a bird-boy?

I guess what I'm saying is that every character has something to whine about, and they all do plenty of whining. They're teenagers with the world on their shoulders and emotional baggage. Whining is almost a requirement.

David had plenty to whine about too...although not everybody agrees with the things he whines about.

I didn't think Tobias was annoying in the least bit.

As for Marco, it's not as though there's a set 2-year mourning period for his mother. Everyone mourns at different paces and some people never get over their loss. I would think that the whole period between the end of book #5 to book #45 Marco is being tramuatized - first she's dead, then she's not really dead but a host to a powerful Yeerk leader, then she might be dead again, etc. It keeps going back and forth, it's like he's being teased.

I can't blame any of the Animorphs for being "whiners". I've certainly heard people whine about more trivial things.

there's a joke in there somewhere. a bad joke, but a joke.

I think the reason marco isnt able to move on is that his father never does. He has to go home everyday to his crappy life and his distant father and constantly be reminded of her. I think if him and his dad had been able to put the whole thing behind them a little then he could have gotten over it alot more.

Tobias, did get annoying at times, i think he was one of the characters that didnt really develop much as the books went on, maybe because he had a few less i dont know, i just always found him as the same moper, still a stolid character but i dno

I never really found Tobias that annoying really.  Like AniDragon said, every was annoying at times.  The only one that really annoyed me was Cassie with her moralizing all the time.

I was never annoyed with Tobias until the ending, when he threw everything he still had away after losing Rachel. None of the other stuff was annoying at all.

the difference is that David started to blame others for mistakes and never really got around to looking at his own actions.

Yeah Tobias was really only annoying to me in the end, when he became a hermit hawk... ::)  I can understand not wanting to talk to Jake, but what about the others?  Ax?  Silly, emo hawk boy...

I bet when he'd get older he'd realize his life wasnt over, which is exactly why  K.A should write an Animorphs:The Aftermath. It could be just  1 book, but it would show what would happen as they age more more and more.  Id dont know about any of you people, but I want to learn more about  after the invasion then the little imformation provided in 54#

I think he still spoke with the Hork-Bajir. It was Toby who found him, and I think it mentioned that his territory was in the same forest the Hork-Bajir were in.

Which I think is fine, because he always seemed to be more at home with the Hork-Bajir than with any human (even Rachel).

I never found Tobias annoying. He might've been depressed at times but it seems to me that he was trying to make the best of things. I enjoyed reading his books.

^  My sentiments exactly.

tobias only annoyed me in 33 and 43, mildly in 23.
Coming to terms with it; understandable.
but then almost 2 books saying "your life sucks, human or bird *evil laugh*"
that got annoying quick.
Still a fav character though

Admittedly I'm still working on a re-reading of the series (and moving very slowly) and have only gotten to Book five. However, I did read Book Three, which seems to be one that is really big on the whiny Tony list. Personally, I didn't think it was all that bad. I really liked the book myself, though (and this will make me sound sadistic) it was because I thought it funny.

However, I'm willing to give him some credit. His life has been rough, and having to fight the instincts of a hawk twenty-four seven as well as Yeerks could take a toll on your sanity. However, I'm with you on the ending (one of the few books I remember when I first read the series) in that he went a bit far with it.

I'm sure my opinion will change as I work my way through the sereis.

Edit: Though I'll admit that Tobias does remind me of this song from Spamalot:
I'm All Alone (http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/spamalot/imallalone.htm)

He didn't annoy me much except for #23.  It was like he was just moping about how he didn't have a family.  Maybe he was a tiny bit annoying in #43.

I think that Tobias, and most of the Animorphs characters, really, are more victims of Deus Angst Machina (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeusAngstMachina (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeusAngstMachina)) than of emo-ness.

To be honest, I didn't find Tobias terribly annoying when I originally read the series. However, I don't remember much of book 3, so that's not a part of my comparison.
What really got on my nerves was the repeated introduction of the Yeerks. It just got old to me around book 20. I mean, it was helpful to me since I started with book 2 and jumped around a bit, but really. After a while, it was just old.

Well, it is understandable.

The first animorphs book I read was 21#. I thought it was brilliant, so I read all 36 animorph books on my shelf(my mom kept buying them)

I would have ditched 21 if it did not tell me about the yeerks and the character decriptions

But yes, it did get old

This is a little off topic, but I also feel that morphing descriptions get old too. It's not that it grosses me out or anything, but I don't really care to read about the morphing process. I tend to just skip those parts.

I skip the andalite introduction, when they get their powers, the morphing process (whether it's new or old), the yeerk introduction, and any other introduction I've read before. Yeah I skip a lot.

It's true, Tobias is a little annoying in the 3rd book... but look, there is worse! I read twice (TWICE) Interview with the vampire... and I don't know anybody more annoying than Louis!! lol
So Tobias isn't so annoying ^_^

Yeah, I kind of got annoyed at times. It was such an unresolved conflict. In each book he would go through a pattern:

1) Torn about being hawk-boy but dealing (usually because of Rachel).

2) Something happens that makes him utterly depressed about his predicament (ie: he kills for the first
time, he eats roadkill, he finds out that his long-lost cousin is really an evil alien warlord hell-bent on his
death, he gets tortured by a masochistic, narcissistic Yeerk...)

3) He mopes about his situation in endless train-of-thought passages (and Rachel comforts him).

4) Something happens where he is able to prove himself and he can come to grips with his situation.

5) He's perfectly fine being hawk-boy.

Somehow even though most books end with him content (whilst still a bit wistful) by the next time a book comes around with his narration, he's back at #1. I love Tobias, but after awhile...sheesh! Tone down the all the mope! I can only handle so much!!

Maybe that's why he only got a book on the second cycles. :)

That's a very good analysis, Terenia. Mind ranking the Animorphs for me? This is my list:

1) Marco
2) Ax
3) Rachel
4) Jake
5) Tobias
6) Cassie

6) Cassie

Why is cassie your least favorite?

Shes awesome! She is my 3rd favorite, only because shes not as invovled as Jake(my first) and rachel(my 2nd)

isnt it wierd shes almost always on independet missions in all the books she narrates

what's weird is that she's my third favourite as well. although I placed tobias (1st) and ax (second) before her.

My personal list is

1. Marco
2. Cassie
3. Jake
4. Ax
5. Tobias
6. Rachel

Personal listing:
1) Ax
2) Tobias
3) Cassie
and 4, 5, and 6 are taken up by Jake, Marco, and Rachel, though not necessarily in that order. I didn't really have a "least favorite" Animorph.

We already have a thread for listing favorite to least favorite animorph.

1) Marco/Rachel: I identify with these two Animorphs the most. Their personalities match up with mine (I'm not sure thats a good thing. Adrenaline junkie and cynicist? Bad combo.)
2) Ax: I bumped Ax up recently, after rereading the series. I think he's hilarious, although sometimes unintentionally so.
3) Tobias: As much as he can be annoying (see my last post on this topic) he has some of the better books and has such an interesting backstory.
4) Jake/Cassie: Jake is boring and Cassie, while she has some of the absolute best books also has some of the worst. Also their relationship annoys me for some reason.
