Ok guys,
I took the liberty to update the forum software (SMF) to the latest build 2.0.
This means that during the next few hours/days/weeks we will be bringing the forum back to it's previous state in terms of features added over the past few years. So if you can't do certain things like view your Karma log; or even see advertisements, don't be frightened, these features may return.
That being said, the Forum now benefits from 100s of new features on your end and on the back-end.
So enjoy.
-
This is so awesome! I love it! :D
I love the minimalistic sleekness! Good work! ;D
-
One question. Will we eventually be going back to the traditional ‘RAF’ appearance? Blue background, fancy lettering and all? I don't mean to sound ungrateful, since I am excited about new features :D, but it’s just that I really liked the way the forum looked before and I would be sad to see it go.
-
Yeah I agree with DN. The previous appearance and layout is much preferable to this one.
-
I'd love to bring the forum back to how it looked prior to the move here. But time is scarce these days.
-
That's okay, I don't mean you have to do it right this instant. I was just worried that it was gone forever and I'd never see it again.
By the way, I admittedly don't know much programming, but if there's anything at all that I can do to help, let me know.

You're good at graphics, so I think I will be calling on you :)
-
If you need some help with that Richard, you can email me the .zip files of the old theme and the current one and I can modify the php and image files to match. I can even come up with a couple of RAF themes if you would like. That way users can choose their own theme.

That...would be awesome. :XD:
I love this one, but obviously I'm a minority.
-
Honestly,I have to say I like the old design better then this one.
-
Wow. Okay, I really, really like this one! I miss the old layout, but... This one's nice! :D Question, on other SMF forums I've been on, users have the ability to change the design for themselves. Like, they have different themes to choose from; is that something we'll be getting with this update? That'd probably appease everyone if it's possible. Otherwise, do what you do, Rich. You haven't done us wrong yet. :)
*EDIT*
Yeah, I liked the old design better, too. But I gotta feeling I'm gonna like this one better once I get used to it.
-
Well I admit it is dfferent and new to see but I liked the other one better then this one. This one seems to..simple while the other was better in my eyes.
-
Yeah, but I like the minimalist feel. Either way, there's no link for chat?!*dies*
I got into chat via my history; here's the link if anyone wants to join me: http://chat.animorphsforum.com/blab.php

You're good at graphics, so I think I will be calling on you :)
Thank you, but keep in mind that I work best with small designs and such, not so much with larger logos and patterns. So I don't really know how much help I'll actually be in this case.
-
Is there a list of all the new features that are/will be available and where they are and how to use them?
-
To those freaked out about the new appearance: I know very few of you were around for Classic RAF; you've only ever known what I still call "New RAF." When Classic died, a significant number of us were majorly bothered by the new look, even though it was (to be fair) quite a bit more aesthetically pleasing than the Classic look.
The main reasons for the freakout, as far as I could tell, were lack of familiarity and therefore loss of comfort... and difficulty finding buttons and links that we were used to spotting reflexively. The icons for new and old threads looked different, for instance, so that was something to re-learn.
Now, I don't know if the updated forum will ever have the option of a 'skin' like original NewRAF, but from where I'm standing, this IS aesthetically more pleasing, and the introduction of a little orange does give nice contrast. The blue is still soothing and relatively familiar, and the only new things needing acclimation are the placements of links and the icons used to identify old and new threads, etc.
I totally understand being uncomfortable with unfamiliar things, and I'm not trying to sound like I'm scolding anybody, nor telling anybody how to feel. I'm simply suggesting, "don't knock it 'til you've tried it awhile." The new skin might grow on you (wow, that sounds nasty XD).
Regardless, cheers! Thanks, Richard; I love the look of the place.
-
Whew, I was worried a bit; like another RAFRift was happening or something. Glad to see that everything is okay.
-

...well...I'm not bragging, but I can do a ghetto job on banners and stuff like that if need be...
And I completely agree with Estelore. ^^
-
Erm... is anyone actually freaking out? O.o Doesn't really seem like it... OOH! What's this button do?
...Absolutely nothing at the moment, nevermind.
Eh hem. New stuff is cool. Or it probably is anyway. *runs off to look at... everything*
-
Ok guys, I apologize for the excessive downtime today. Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of the issues today.
And in case you all forgot, the RAF Chat (http://chat.animorphsforum.com) should be moving smoothly now.
-

Ha. I like the change of colors in the quotations ^^
That's very neat and practical.
Although I am not fond of the general "roundness" of the new layout. I liked the well defined rectangles we used to have.
-
I forgot to add that the top link to the RAFblog is not there anymore.
-
And obviously that the posts are not automatically merged anymore ><
-
Yep, the RAF Links are gone (will be added later).
As for double posting? Yeah; I realised! :-/

this.
I'm not a huge fan of the new look either, but yeah, I've already been through "classic" and "new" RAF. You get used to aesthetic changes. As long as it's light blue, it's good enough for me.
...although where are my smileys?...
-
A member of the year category has been included, nice.
But we cannot see who got online during the last 24hours :( Which is sad for my stalking nature.
-
I just noticed that some of the spoiler tags got broken, so that now whatever had previously been in a spoiler is there for everyone to see. Thought I should probably mention that, since that could potentially become an issue for those who are allergic to spoilers (like me).
As far as the double-posting thing, actually, I never really liked being completely denied the ability to double-post. I know, I know, it opens up the door for spammers who make three posts when one is plenty, but there are (at least occasionally) legitimate reasons to post twice in one topic, such as when nobody has posted in a long time and you have something important to say despite having been the last one to post in the topic before.
Then again, I'm sure it makes the mods' jobs a lot easier not to have to clean up random forum spam from double-posting, so perhaps the convenience to the mods trumps the inconvenience on our end. Having never been a mod, I don't know. I'm just putting in my two cents.
-
The lack of double posting was always kind of annoying for moderating on the Animafia board. And what DN said about being the last one to post, a long time ago. XD
-

Is it working now?
-
The spoilers seem to work for me.

True. But every time someone added something to their old previous post, the thread went back up on the top of the list of threads, so the merging system was not really penalizing.
EDIT:
Actually it was really convenient for a lazy bum like me since whenever I wanted to add something to my post, I could just write it in the quick reply and it would merge. Thus I would be spared both the inconvenience of editing and the stigma of being a double poster (if my laziness won over me :p)
-
WHAT???
You can ADD PEOPLE to a BUDDY LIST!
EDIT
And I have no clue about what it does apart from making the names of the buddies appear in bold characters at the bottom of the forum when they are online.
EDIT
It seems to be the only thing it does, signals your buddies are online when they are online since we cannot see if they were online during the last 24hours, which is a pity, I like seeing who was online during the day.
I guess it would be useful in a really busy forum with at least 50 people online at the same time. On RAF it's a bit useless.
-
Yep, the spoilers seem to be working again. Thanks for getting that fixed so fast!
EDIT: So, we can't give our reasons for karma-ing people anymore? Is there any way at all that we can get that feature back, or at the very least make it optional? I like to explain why I'm giving karma, and I prefer to know why other people are giving me karma, too.
-
Another note: A reason isn't needed/able to be given for Karma anymore. You're also not able to see your karma log. Karma is only able to be given once an hour, period. Not just once an hour to the same person, but only once an hour to ANYONE.
-
I definitely don't like the new look. It's not that bad. It's just the old one was a lot better. I agree with Toc about the rounded edges, they're better squared.
I like the different colors for quotes.
The karma limit is annoying. Was there a reason for that change?
Are we still in a test phase, or are all of these changes permanent? I'd like to know if we're wasting breath here.
-
Nothing's permanent!
-
Looks good, Richard.
-
I don't use karma more then it should be anyway. I don't like the look. :\. Im kinda biased though cause change doesn't suit me well. I haven't updated my itunes in ages.
-
there are no smileys available in the quick reply window. =/

You kidding? I LOVE the seamless look of it! Everything is so open...again, I love sleek and minimalist. ^^ In fact I may create a new avatar that's sleek, white and has a lighter eagle shape in it. :)
-
try going to your profile theme (http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?action=profile;area=theme) and selecting ' Use sidebar menus instead of dropdown menus when possible.' (first thing i did when i logged in)
makes browsing through a heck of a lot easier.
also, WYSIWYG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WYSIWYG)is a fantastic addition (click the(http://animorphsforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/toggle.gif) button to access it) - you might want to consider the option 'Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default.'
you'll be able to make posts in more of a 'microsoft word' way rather than just using tags and previewing.
lastly, if you select text and then hit (http://animorphsforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/url.gif), you'll be able to add a named-URL (testing (http://animorphsforum.com/www.google.com)) - much easier than manually typing out testing (http://www.google.com)
images work similarly - just click (http://animorphsforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/img.gif) and type the URL in - you'll actually be able to see it in the reply box before you submit your post.
Although I am not fond of the general "roundness" of the new layout. I liked the well defined rectangles we used to have.
yup. that's what's happening these days (i prefer a sharper look myself - i'll see what we can do about the theme).

remember guys, this is the first day. we'll sort things out.

A little bit of roundness is neat but it's a matter of balance. Too much is overbearing.
This made me realize that facebook was really sharp for its time. Yet, it's working fine.
Sharp and well defined frames help you see the way things are organized better.

The activity meter! Rest in peace.
-
The activity meter! Rest in peace.
It will be back. Eventually.
-
Awesome :]
-
If it was up to me I'd say change it back.
-
Forgive me for plagiarizing a speech that was itself plagiarized, but...
I have a dream that my forum will one day live in an Internet where it will not be judged by the colors of its skin but by the content of its character!
-
If it was up to me I'd say change it back.
good thing it's not ;)
-
LOL I know.I mean its not bad to the point I hate it,I just liked the old one better.
But still cool job to Richard for making the forum like this.
-
Gwahh! The Chat link is back! Maybe I missed it when it returned. Still, awesome! :D
-
I have a dream that my forum will one day live in an Internet where it will not be judged by the colors of its skin but by the content of its character!
Maybe that day will come, when the colors of its skin stop hindering the reading of the content of its characters.
-
They don't hinder whatsoever; you're just needing more time to adjust to the change. ^_^
-
It's true in the case of our forum, but something like this http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?action=download;lemma=965;id=6191;image would make me want to kill myself (after having lost both my eyes in the process of looking at it).
Also RAFchat did not change. I thought it would be affected too.^^
-
i'm thinking about adding some alternate themes. people can have a choice whether they want to keep this or see something more like 1.1.x RAF
-
That would be neat.
-
I love the new look. I'm sure it will take some time to get used to, but it's really cool. Thank you, Richard and the rest of the staff :) Can't wait to get familiar with all the new features too.
-
i'm thinking about adding some alternate themes. people can have a choice whether they want to keep this or see something more like 1.1.x RAF
That would be a cool feature. I also miss all the stuff the quick reply had like smiles and bold buttons.

Ditto.

I don't mean to imply I don't like the new features. They're great. I do like the WYSIWYG feature. I'll have to play with it for a little while to see what I can do with it.
It's a little glitchy, but I still like it.
Test of the new hyperlink feature. (http://www.despair.com/#)
It's also a little glitchy, but still good.
And yeah, I do judge forums and websites in general by color, probably for the same reason that carpets, cars, clothes, paintings, etc. are. A feature that would allow users to choose their color schemes and even their layouts is an amazing idea, Goom.
I also want to say that we (or at least I) are not trying to criticize improving the forum. We're just expressing our opinions so that you can get some feedback and make adjustments.
-
Also... OOH! Look at that! ...Sorry. Eh hem.
But Rich, when you get the chance... make the ads for gold members go bye-bye? XD
(I'm sure it's somewhere on the agenda. I just feel better having asked. :P)

Not anymore. :D Thank you!
-
I'm good with whatever y'all do. :P I know you won't let us down! :D Take your time to get things sorted, I dunno much about this kinda' stuff, but I imagine it's more than a little bitta work getting it done all nice n' proper. =/
However... That list of new features... I'd totally love that! :P
-
Let's not bring the activity bar back. Lol I feel like it's mocking me everytime it goes dowm
-
Just a FYI, I'm still being flashed with 'desirable Russian girls' and free hair straighteners. Darn ads :P
-
You get more interesting ads than I did. :P
-
Just a FYI, I'm still being flashed with 'desirable Russian girls' and free hair straighteners. Darn ads :P
How about now?
-
I'm getting a lot more professional looking ads about professional things, so I'm happy :P
-
FYI: the ads you see are based on what Google thinks you like/want.
-
:eyebrow: The implications of that are... interesting. :P
Liking the changes so far. ^_^ ...The ones I've been able to notice so far, anyway. :P
-
FYI: the ads you see are based on what Google thinks you like/want.
O.O...I never clicked one of those ads, I swear, rofl. That's interesting...how does the system work?
-
Geez louise, I come back from vacation and you pull this on me?! :P
Kidding, but...wow, that's a change! It'll definitely take getting used to...I haven't explored fully yet, but I do like how it gives you suggestions of who you want to send a PM to when you're sending one. That's definitely nice.
*goes to poke around some more*
-
FYI: the ads you see are based on what Google thinks you like/want.
That explains why I'm seeing certain ads on a children's forum....
Anywho!
Liking the changes I've been able to notice, and as with any update to anything, we gotta see how the base goes before we can get all our add-ons (mods) back. :P Work the bugs out, take your time, y'all!
And happy birthday, Kev!
test heehee... I like this WYSIWYG feature! testitytesttesttest! :D
-
So this is RAF's...4th upgrade? Does that make the one before it the new RAFclassic :\
HAPPY BIRFDAY GOOM!!!
:happybirthday:
-
There is only one Classic. v_v
The most recent was NewRAF1.0, and this would be NewRAF2.0 (by our standards).
-
FYI: the ads you see are based on what Google thinks you like/want.
Are you implying I'm into desirable Russian girls, Richard?
Thanks, you fixed it. Don't see them anymore :)
-
At the bottom of the front page, where it shows who's online, shouldn't the key (where it says what colors mean what kind of member) have "God" as black, instead of "Elite?" Since no one's currently an "Elite," I mean.
-
I thought a few people did go with Elite? I'm wrong as usual.D:
-
Look at the memberlist by posts. :P See anybody?
The only person who's been Elite since I joined was estrid. Then she donated. Then she became a mod. Then I proved that I remember way too many random things.
-
I would've gone Elite had I not donated. although, I've been toying with the idea of asking for a personal title. I was thinking about it, but I dunno if I wanna ask or not. :P
-

google analytics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Analytics#Privacy_Issues) tracks pages you visit and searches (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/21/AR2006022101689.html). ;)
*cough* (http://www.dukgo.com)

everybody who has 5000+ posts is considered a god (including the staff and donors), since it is one of the 'post count based groups' (which aren't shown at the bottom). the reason that you are seeing elite on there is because that rank is one in the 'regular groups' section that we used to mask over the god rank for requesting members.
i could always hide the elite rank, but i don't believe i can show the god rank down there unless i manually added a secondary group for each god member.
-
Ah. :-\ That's too bad, since it makes it look like we haven't got anyone who has over 5,000 posts when you click on it. XD
-
It's gone now!

*cough* (http://www.dukgo.com)
It always cracks me up when people say "ahh I have those ads about ...*unspeakable thing* "
;D
Personally, I had an ad for... The university of Adelaide for quite a while now, and "getting aussie business online".
I'm such a serious gal
BTW, I don't know what you did but now there is a massive problem with the quotes.
It might just come from me, but I doubt it. The quotes don't work fine anymore. When I clicked "quote" at the top right corner of Goom's post, it lead me to quick reply without letting me quote.
I had to go to "review" and then "insert quote" but even then it did not work right.
-
You're right. I's because of the fancy quick reply. I'll remove that, so the quote will work again.
-
Oy.
It's quite the dilemma! ><
EDIT:
LOL, I have just gotten that ad:
"Male? Aged 18 to 55? Clinical trials in Melbourne."
WTF?
-
I'm getting book publishing and technical/mechanical ads now. I was NOT looking at Indian women online, lol
-
I'm getting Google Chrome, WOW, APU, PCR machines (I think, I can't remember the ad, but it had to do with PCRs), and a job offer to become a sales rep for makeup. Ummm....
-
I just get google chrome and Full Sail University adds :P
-
Is anyone getting this error message a bit more frequently since the update? Or am I just imagining the increase in frequency?
The server is currently under high stress. Please try again shortly.
It usually happens when I click "Show new replies to your posts."
-
I didn't get it at all before the update. Or at least infrequently enough that I don't remember getting it. But yeah, I'm getting it, too.
-
Waaaaay too often but it's a balance issue I'm told.
-
The server we're on is experiencing high loads lately. Which would account for the increased time it takes for page to load, along with the error message.
-
Yeah its been laggy for me lately.
So I got applauded and I don't know why. Is the new karma system permanent?
-
yeah, I've gotten that message too.
Also, I'm not complaining, but... I've noticed that the tabs at the top of my browser window just say "Richard's Animorphs Forum" instead of the thread title like they used to. Just thought I'd point it out. :P
-
That's now fixed. Thanks for bringing it up.
-
cool!
also, another note... in the members list, I can't see who has Skype or Gmail. AIM, MSN, and Yahoo are there, but not any others.
-
Is there a reason that when I check my total posts, all I can see are the topics I've created? :-X It still shows me the total number I have, but I have 3700+ pages of... blank.
-
Edit: Not sure. Will look into it.
-
Is there a reason that when I check my total posts, all I can see are the topics I've created? :-X It still shows me the total number I have, but I have 3700+ pages of... blank.
yeah, not happening to me. maybe you have too many? ;)
-
Hilarious. :P And no.
-
When you want to see one member's history, it only gives you the history of their threads, not their posts, no matter if you click message or topic.
How am I meant to stalk my bf to make sure he does not chat some rafian behind my back if I cannot keep track of his posts?
-
That's exactly what I just said. :P
Also, see, goom? Not 'cause I have too many!
-
So Steph was RAFstalking herself.... :P
Also, just to put my two cents in, I'm pretty comfortable with both this layout and the old one. The only thing I really miss is being able to give/see reasons for karma. It's just not as warm and fuzzy when it's only a number.
-

yeah, i noticed that. seems to be a different amount of pages that show up for each member - the first and last page always seem to work.
from the left, mine goes up to page 18, while t0bias's only shows 1 page.
-
So Steph was RAFstalking herself.... :P
I have to know how many total posts I have somehow! ;) ...And yeah. Yeah I am. *cough*
-
I agree with Amber, I wish I even knew who changed my karma. Then I could just ask them. :P
-
When I go onto my profile and select "Show Posts" I get a big problem. I have 96 pages of posts and on the first page all it shows are the new topics ive started. The rest are all blank. All except for the 96'th page which has the same thing just that the list is reversed.
-
we've reported the exact problem in the update thread. merging.
-
That's exactly what I just said. :P
Also, see, goom? Not 'cause I have too many!
Sorry Steph, I thought your problem was linked to my problem but it was not clear to me that it was the same thing so I preferred to use my own words :p
-
Is karma still being given for creation of threads? I just saw a brand-new member who had created an introduction thread, yet had zero karma (don't bother looking for the member in question because I just gave them a karma), and I don't think they've done anything to be smitten for. Has anyone else made a thread recently and not gotten karma for it?
-
Just noticed that accursed Activity Bar is back *sigh* I knew I couldn't escape it for long
-
You're just going to have to post more, is all. :P
-
Oh hey yeah, I noticed that too, but forgot to say anything! Thanks for bringing it back, now I have a reason to post in the Bored Board again!
-
what its not fun enough on its own?
-
Well, yeah, but I like to watch my progress meter rise while I'm there. Or keep it at 100, as the case may be.
-
I hate seeing it fall! And it always falls at times where I don't feel like doing excess amounts of posting
-
Hmmm kinda sad that you get into those moods......

i'm just happy it's on the bottom finally. it was way too top-heavy before.

lol

Goom, have I told you lately that I love your aesthetic sense of proportions? <3
-
Well thats only slightly weird, by RAF standards
-
:P Says the person with hot wings.
-
Im presuming that your calling my wings sexy.
-
You presume incorrectly; we were calling your wings noticeably-more-than-room-temperature.
-
Says the star. :P
-
Speaking of hot wings you havn't stopped by the bar
-
This is all off-topic chatter.
-
sorry

Rich, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that we can see who posted in each thread and how many posts they posted in the threads. ><

Rich, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that we can see who posted in each thread and how many posts they posted in the threads. ><
I'm experimenting with it.
I think it's a neat add on.
And to answer your question Cody, it just shows who has posted in the thread, and how many times.

:P Guessed that. I sorta figured that's what it was after I thought about it for a second.... No worries if there isn't, but is there a way to make it collapsible? It's sorta.. Huge. :P Otherwise, worth dealing with the huge to have the feature. :P
-
It is collapsible, just click on the "-" beside "Author"
-
I love less the fact that the problem mentioned earlier about finding all the posts/threads one member made, is not solved :(
-
I love less the fact that the problem mentioned earlier about finding all the posts/threads one member made, is not solved :(
Still working on that one.
-
I love that I now know what topic I post the most in. :D ...Like 1/5 of my posts are apparently in one topic. O.o

Make that closer to 1/4 of my posts.
I like it. XD It helps me quantify my insanity in a new way. :P
-
which one?
-
I don't think you can accurately quantify the posts in the bored bored in relation to your overall posts, because most the time they don't actually count toward your total posts.
-
O.o Eh? How is that? All my bored board posts count for the total. Unless they've been deleted. Anyway, 12,800+ is roughly 23% of 55,200+.

Ok, using the "show posts" option is the best way to do it!
I thought (for some reason) you were using the count in your mini-profile.

in 619 days you've made 55377 posts, nearly 90 per day... you're nuts! ;D
by the time this post is finished i'm sure they'll be at least 8 more.
so, back on track. RAF still going slow for anybody? i've gotten disconnected quite a few times but it seems a tad speedier (than it was).
-
Ha, no, come on, don't be silly. ^_^ Only 5!
And yeah, yeah it is. 'S relatively fine at the moment, but it lags often enough to be getting annoying.
-
My only concern currently is the "Session timed out" message which is most annoying when someone has posted just before me (in between when I click reply and actually submit a new reply). Then I get stuck with the session timed out message every time I click Post until I decide to copy my message then go back to the original topic then click reply to reply.
The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
Your session timed out while posting. Please try to re-submit your message.
-
Love the 'active poster' feature on the top of threads. :]
-
As soon as I posted that it was lagging for me now, it started lagging. -_- Poor timing.
-
useful for RAF stalking
-
Weird, all these lagging others are experiencing. RAF is working completely fine on my phone, computer, laptop and iPad. I'll chech the ps3 later.
...knock on wood.

I'm not really a fan of the fact that on "Show Stats" under "Most Popular Boards by Posts" it doesn't show the Bored Board. :-X

Dino called me today because she said she had been unable to contact me via PM. Apparently it was telling her my inbox was full. I have since deleted a few PMs, but I thought Gold Donors had infinitely large inboxes. Is this just a kink in the update or was I just wrong about my inbox size?

I had this same problem awhile ago. I'm not sure what Rich did to fix it.
...
Ok, I just sent you a PM and it went through without error. o.O
-
I probably shouldn't have deleted like 7 or 10 PMs before this was resolved, sorry.
-
I like the new look also. Can't say I had any strong feelings for the old style, though.

Ads are back for me.
They're gone now?
-
Yup! :)
-
Thanks, Richard. I'll let you know if it happens again, but I'm sure it won't.
-
It's probably already been discussed, but will we be able to see who has changed our karma again?
-
Yeah, I'm with Kelly. The karmic history and the comments we could leave with it was one of my favorite features of oldnewRAF or whatever the geezers are insisting we call it. Is that something I can reasonably expect to get back sometime soon?
All told, I'm very pleased with the new RAF, though. Good work, Rich ^_^ That said, aside from the karma thing, I have a few other (very) minor nitpicks.
The "post history" in people's profiles is still just showing a topic history. Being able to read posts by person isn't a feature I use remarkably often, but it is occasionally handy to have (and actually, in a possibly-unrelated tangent, it'd probably be really helpful to be able to browse posts by person within a topic- not sure if that's even feasible).
The quick reply is simple- I miss having the control buttons available down here. And the smileys. Miss my quick smileys. I've had to memorize the keystrokes for :P
When expanding the ellipses between the numbers for pages in a topic, it'll only expand in little jumps of 50 pages at a time. Not worth commenting on most of the time, but searching for something on, say, page 950 of the GESB archive gets a little tedious.
Umm... beyond that, I can't think of anything. I haven't noticed any lag lately and everything seems to be running smoothly. In the immortal words of Al Gore, we be RAFin'!

i believe the logs are still saved, but we'll most-likely have to wait for an compatibility update of the mod.

rich tried out a mod (which brought the stuff back), but there were some bugs so he removed it. i'm sure we'll have it back eventually.

i don't mind it actually. i agree with the GESB being affected, however. :P
http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?topic=8261.135 (http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?topic=8261.135) <-- the number at the end is the post # at the top. you can manually change it in the address bar to get to a page. there are (by default) 15 posts per page - you do the math. if the number you enter isn't divisible by 15, it'll automatically take you to the nearest page number.
if you keep clicking the ellipses, you'll move by 50 each time.

I was about to start the July RAF World Map when I realized nationality has been wiped from the profiles, as well as "about me" information. Some people have voluntarily entered their location (mine, for instance, says Houston), but this makes the map difficult if this info isn't there. Also, a lot of folks used to say where they were from in their about section, not in the location section. Is there a way to retrieve and display the old data?
-
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=417 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=417)
i believe this is what we had before. not sure if the data is still there.
-
It'd be a great help to that project if we could reinstall it. If the data's not there, I'll make a plea for everyone to re-enter it.
-
Karma Log is back. There's no limit on how many times you can applaud/smite, now.
-
interesting
-
nice job rich! :)
just don't abuse the new system though, guys.
-
I feel stupid saying this, but I can't find the karma log on my profile. Where is it? >.<
-
I'm with the Seal on this one. I is lost!
I could also see the unlimited karma changes thing being abused- d'you guys think it'd be worth re-implementing a time limit of some sort?
All told, though, I'm very glad to see this one come back ^_^
-
Profile -> Summary -> under your avatar, Who Changed My Karma?
Or
Mini Profile (what's on all your posts) -> Karma (click the word itself)
If that doesn't show up for you, then... *shrug* :-/
-
Huh. That wasn't there earlier today, I'm pretty sure.
Anyway, awesome job, Richard! +1 for fixing the Karma (there's irony in there somewhere, I'm sure).
-
:) You're welcome.
Also I've limited the amount of Karma one can give/take away to 24 per day.
-
Coolidge. :) Likin' everything thus far! :D
Just curious, though, it's been awhile now, are we sticking with this new layout, or are we going to be going back to the old one/getting individual themes as Goom talked about? Either is good with me, just curious.
-
i need to increase my insanity level.. i'm almost sane :(
-
anything I can do to help with that?
-
i need to increase my insanity level.. i'm almost sane :(
O.O We can't have that. :) You're welcome.
Also I've limited the amount of Karma one can give/take away to 24 per day.
Is that 24 times total (i.e. I can applaud 24 people in a day) as opposed to... before I could give/take karma from the same person 12 times a day/every two hours, and do that for as many people as I want? XD Though, oi, thinking of that many reasons for karma...
-
So goom to raise your insanity levels I came up with smashing your head on the wall 37 times, then head over to the pool to hold your head under for just long enough for your brain to be completely deprived of oxygen and then smoke some shrooms.
-

total, basically the equivalent of 1/hr for 24 hours. (you could do more than 1 per hour though)
-
Just keep up with the shrooms.
-
Just noticed the "Insanity Level" bar! That is awesome!
My insanity level is 100% whoot!
-
Just as well. How often does the total amount of karma go over that in a given day, anyway? :P ...Probably more often than I'm thinking, nevermind.
-
Oh that went over my head I thought goom was saying he hadnt done anything random in the past 3 hours. A world where I am more insane than goom and on an equal level with steph? Impossible.
-
Just as well. How often does the total amount of karma go over that in a given day, anyway?
it really doesn't (unless people are abusing the system).
-
I'm lovin' the 'Insanity Bar' improvement! Epic idea.
-
Although its not very acurate. Because again most of you are alot less sane then me yet I have a full bar. Maybe it should only go up when you type the phrases 'time machine" "ninja" "the voices" "suar" and "it is too real!"
-

'Course, it's really just a number under your post count and nothing else. :P
And honestly, I'm offended by the insanity level thing. I don't appreciate being confined to such a finite amount of insanity. :P
-
my point exactly. Steph should have something up there in the thousands.

well, it is a percentage. you're completely insane.
-
*waves hand* Yes, I suppose, but still, plenty of people have 100% insanity level! :P Are you saying they're as insane as I am?
-
No, no, see, the units are different. I'm one hundred dinosaurs of insanity, which is less than one hundred Hugh Lauries.
-
which is why bear is forbidden from reaching above 50
-
Ok guys, a bit off topic. This discussion can go here (http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?topic=5172.0).
-
Just noticed that you can look at a post and see if it's been applauded. It's in the bottom left corner above the signature. Pretty cool feature, I think.
-
That is pretty cool. In fact, if my post log were fixed, it would be great! Then I could go figure out where my mystery karma came from....
-
Hey, I just had an idea! For the 'activity' bar, would it be even remotely possible to implement a system where each individual member can determine what the bar measures? Like, one member could leave it as "Insanity level" whereas another member might instead decide to write "Britishness" or "Luminosity"?
If that's too difficult to be worth implementing, then please feel free to ignore me, since I actually like "Insanity level" a lot. :D But, I'm also just a little bit curious to see what other members might come up with, if that were a customizable option.
-

just one setting (which we can rename) for the description. i don't think it's worth the trouble of figuring out a way to change it (at least low-priority).

Don't worry about it, then. I'm loving all the changes, so keep up the good work!
-
Just thought to post it, I think this is related to the update...where the heck did the blog go?
-
It's in the "News:" bit at the top. :-X Or, you know, blog.animorphsforum .com. But yeah, a proper link to the whole thing'd be nice again. XD
There was a post about me for a whole day before I saw it. That's just not right.

well, we want RAFians to have a uniform experience, functionality-wise. i've tried out the core theme; while it looks familiar, there are a lot of new things that don't show up or work correctly.
it's a maybe.

I'll place it back in the top navigation. (It's at the bottom, too).

Not sure if it's been forgotten or unfixable but the Profile "Show Posts" link still doesn't beyond the 1st page. If I remember correctly the old forum had "Show posts" and something like "Show topics" where topics are the topics the person started themselves. Can the "Show posts" thing in Profile be sorted out?
-

once you click 'show posts' they'll be 3 sections to choose from on the page: messages, topics, and attachments.
i'm still noticing that a lot of the middle-range posts are showing up blank, though. that needs fixing.
-
All it shows at the moment are the first posts for topics you made. So it's exactly the same thing for "messages" and "topics."
-
yeah
-
All it shows at the moment are the first posts for topics you made. So it's exactly the same thing for "messages" and "topics."
They're the exact same thing, that is, except for the fact that "show posts" still lists the number of pages you'd need to view all of your posts. It's very noticeable with my profile, since I've only started about five topics. It shows the five posts I had as the first page in a topic on the first page (numbered 1-5), and those same five posts on the last page (numbered 20000+, based on what I assume is my current total post count), and in between I have over 1300 blank pages.
It's definitely broken in some way- almost reminds me of how unregistered guests to the forum are only able to view the first post in each topic, so it will only show posts that were the first post in a topic.
Anyway, that'd be a very nice feature to get working correctly, if you get the chance to tackle it >.<

Leave it to Steph to figure it out!

Ooh karma from RIchard! Now my life is complete!
-
It's not a big deal I'm just curious about something that appeared recently. On the main page down near the bottom in the 'Users Online' section I noticed something weird. It said
24 Guests, 12 Users (18 Spiders, 2 Hidden)
What are 'Spiders'?
-
They're bots. Little statistics-keeping things, and the like.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler)
known by different names, they basically travel across the internet and get info on visited pages.
-
I see. Are they gonna spam or steal personal info or hack my comp?
-
No, yes, no, respectively. The instant you get online by pretty much any browser, personal info is being stolen and used to figure out what ads to shove in your face. :P
-
Which explains why I see dating site and MMORPG ads when Im on RAF right?
-
More or less. They occasionally give you ones that don't make any sense, though. :P
-
oh like what do you mean they dont make sense?
-
...Like it's stuff that you wouldn't want. O.o
-
oh ok.
Like a backup server for Windows???
-
Basically if your typing certain words and making certain searches it collects the data and will customize your ad. that technology is slowly going farther. So basically in the future your phone could get an update for 1$ off a low fat capachino at starbucks. The moment you drive by a starbucks. And thats exactly what you order when you go there.
Obviously the technology isn't perfect because it gave me an ad for a dating website exclusively for african people. Then again right now im getting an ad for full sail university which is one of the colleges that teaches you to program video games, and I have been talking about them a whole lot lately. In fact Im considering going there.
-
For some reason Im gettin an ad for high heels???
-
like I said. Not perfect yet
-
Or maybe it is. ;) :P
-
=/ I keep getting Credit Score ads. XD that dosen't make any sense to me, really... I'm not sure I HAVE any credit yet. =P
-
well unless you have a credit card, no
-
I was NOT looking up high heels broken. :P
-
It seems to think I can drive

Hey, is there a reason most of the extra banks of smileys are missing from message reply? Is that a feature on our queue to bring back? Also, I still miss my font color! *is whiny*
-
You can manually pick a colour for your fonts by working out the hex colour code for it. For example the colour of some of the background is #F5F5F5 so to use that colour it would be: <Ta da!>
Ta da!

Yeah, I know it, but having a default post color was so nice, and added a lot of flavor to the forum, since I'd started associating certain colors with certain people.

I've gotten in the habit of just typing the codes in, Lumy. :P

i've gotten a few people asking this, so i figured i'd post how to hide the activity bar (client-sided).
download adblock plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/) (for firefox/chrome) and optionally element hiding helper (https://adblockplus.org/en/elemhidehelper).
after you've gotten it installed, go to 'preferences > filters > add filter'.
name it animorphsforum.com##.activity_holder
if you'd like to be able to turn off and on signatures on demand, you could also try animorphsforum.com##.signature
animorphsforum.com##.smalltext will remove nearly everything from posts besides the content and username; good for quick browsing.
disabling the filters is easy - just uncheck the corresponding box in 'my element hiding rules'
experiment around with element helper :)

Ebooks are still up when you google 'animorphs forum'. Are they supposed to be?
-
I actually just noticed this, sort of... I was on RAFClassic (digging info out of an ancient PM) and I saw the banner that said "Ebooks: Click here". So I did. And there they were.
-
Did you try opening one, though? Rather than actually giving you the PDF, it links you to Richard's post about Scholastic's letter.
-
So it does..it didn't the other day when I discovered it. You're welcome Richard...

Just wondering if there were any updates.... And I sorta miss my offensively-orange font colour. :P
No rush, just curious. Totally loving the new look once I got used to it, BTW, y'all. Looks*... Clean.
