Shades of Grey

I stare at the small rectangular piece of paper
And I can’t tell if it’s black or white.
I think it depends on when I look at it.
Sometimes it looks darker than night.
Like the reflection of a cold, dark abyss
So deep you never heard the rock you threw hit the bottom.
My fingers even numb as I hold it in my hands
And it begs to be dropped.
It pleads to be pried away from lifeless fingers.
Sometimes it’s brighter than day.
Like the blinding doctors light
So warm it calls you away from death
And back into the steady beep of a heart monitor.
More inviting than an open door
With that familiar welcome mat
Where I’m no longer welcome.
Sometimes it’s just grey.
An overcast.
It’s hot and I’m shivering.
My vision is crystal clear
With no color.
All because I can’t stop staring
At your picture.

Wow. That's one of those poems that makes you take a long, deep breath at the end when you finally come back to the surface. Wow, Toomin.

The universe is, instant by instant, re-created anew. There is, in truth, no Past, only a memory of the Past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. The only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is
now
. Be glad of it.
