I'd like to start this thread where we can post images of any items, locations, models, etc... we at RAF think could work for an Animorphs Comic. Basically, whatever you guys picture to be visually referencial to the Animorphs, please post here.
Would like to see lots of images and feedback opinions.
It would be interesting to see what you Californian locals out there can contribute to insight!

here are some pics of a massive mall/shopping center that i kinda pictured the what mall in the animorphs town looked like

i hope that u can use these pics as a type of reference...
(btw, it's a shopping center called Knox City, it's down near where i live)
-
Here are some pictures of the forestry. Take note of the tall sequoia/redwood trees and ferns:

Here's the land Cassie's farm would be on. Basically, a generic, grassy, sloping plain with the forest behind it:

Oh, and an interesting fact. Westfield shopping centers were started by an Aussie, and they are immensely popular here in California. The architecture of Westfield malls are pretty similar, at least from what I saw in a Melbourne mall and my local mall. So you won't really have to model it differently.
Do you have any specific Californian/American questions?
-
Those are some cool inside pics. I can picture that shopping center being like the one in Melbourne, for sure. I am going to try and get an air view of a random Westfield (interesting detail there, rossabo) shops over here. If you do manage to find a good one, pls post it here!!
And I can picture that kind of scene as being Cassie's backyard, too. I had an idea of how Cassie's house could look like, but not the whole farm. I am going to go off and draw a scene in which I could use that as reference. Thanks.
Also I haven't had a go at drawing the barn yet, either.
Looking at those photos, you can really see how the Animorphs got away with morphing in the woods at the edge of suburbia and so on. Over here, in Australia, our 'bush' isn't so dense, so I would always find it challenging to imagine, say, Ax living in a scoop for so long without being spotted. The environment was really ideal for the Animorphs. Look how close to the ocean the florest already is!!!
rossabo, I don't have any specific questions at the mo. But I mean, as site information, you guys that actually live there could give a lot of valid insight.
-
ross, that's some great pictures.
exactly like i pictured it :)
-
here's a pic of the shopping center roof, like u wanted
-
Holy moley.
I wanna go shopping there..
-
wow! Hunter, about the pictures of the mall in your first post, it's EXACTLY how I pictured the mall in Animorphs when I was reading them! I think it's the mall Katherine was talking about! I even can see Jake and David falling in the 2nd picture!
-
I've always pictured something with more floors

ain't it just THE perfect mall? it's also the biggest one in the southern hemisphere...

well, i only pictured it as a 2 storey monster

Hey does that last pic say something about Aussie Disposals? ???
-
yep... it's an (ex)army supply/camping gear store... why?
-
ohh right. cool. I thought it was another one of those shops where they sell heaps of aussie stuff like kangaroo toys.
we have them here for the tourists..don't like them :-\
-
wow cool but a little bit smaller than I thought :-\
-
Kewl material, Hunter! Let's make this the Mall for our comic!
Do you have a visual on the entrance by any chance?! Or I could try making one up!
On topic and out of curiosity: Anyone remember the fleeing-scene at the end of The Diversion, where Tobias and his mum are evading the granny-psycho-Controller in the helicopter???!!!
There is a Mall scene there with description of some Mall...
Anyone think that was THE Mall the Animorphs used to frequent?! It was just a lack of consistency in the Ghostwriter?!
-
I think it must be a different mall, because it's quite close to Tobias's mother's house, and her house isn't near Rachel and Jake's houses... The city must be enough big for 2 or 3 little mall...
But not sure.

i can't find a pic of the entrance, but would you mind if i gave drawing it a try in 1-point-perspective?
i need to practice it for one of my classes, so i thought, why not do two things with one piece?

I'd like to point out that California has a very different architectural style from the Northern Midwest and New England. Lots of small differences add up: (note: this all comes from Santa Clara county. Animorphs may be set further south.
- Snow-free areas have raised retro-reflectors (http://en.wikipedia.org/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raised_pavement_marker) on the surface of the street. Also present are Botts' Dots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botts%27_dots), on all snow-free highways.
- Streets are very broad. Residential roads are four lanes wide: two parking, two driving and possibly extra room for fire hydrants. However, these are typically not lined. Speed limits are often painted on the road surface, in a line across the road repeated once per lane.
- On lined streets, bicycle lanes are very common.
- The curb is poured cement, not asphalt or granite (like in NE). This curb is continuous with the gutter at the side of the road.
- Older neighborhoods have short, close packed houses. Houses are close to the road (small front lawn, larger back lawn). Lots are separated by fences. Overhead utility poles are behind houses and feeder drops pass low over the back lawns. I really wish I had a camera with me, cause I was really feeling like I had been dropped into Visitor or Predator today. I'll see if I can borrow Dad's tomorrow.
I think it would be really helpful to have one of the CA residents walk around and snap lots and lots of photos.
-
ok... i've decided that my drawing skills are not up to scratch, so i can't draw the front of the mall... that and we don't have a scanner :P
when i get a chance, i'll go to Knox City and take a couple of snapshots...
-

Mate, I don't need to mind anything! Get onto it!!! Hehehe!
Get some help from your teacher or something. HAVE A GO, Hunter!!!
I think you could be right, Dameg. It's just odd the way KA had more of a consistency in her writings than the Ghostwritten ones. She had used the Mall as action scenes at other books, it's seems almost peculiar a choice to make up a new random one down the track.
The Animorphs and this Mall must have been VERY near the city. Its dome-top was meant to be directly under the skyscrapers. Though the entrances could extend for whatever length, the pool complex was also said to be under Animorphs' town. I am beginning to think that the cave complex itself may well be bigger than I pictured.
...I think it would be really helpful to have one of the CA residents walk around and snap lots and lots of photos.
Interesting. I am guessing that those specifics you listed could bog us down though.
We don't have an EXACT hit on WHERE the Animorphs lived, only a rough area. So I think the underlying idea is to make the Animorphs town look like any other average American suburbia.
ANYONE who has taken interesting relevant shots, like a sidewalk they imagined the Anis to be walking in, or a house they pictured to be Jake's or Rachel's, a barn, a high school they attended and think could have been the Anis', an uncle that looks like their idea of Chapman or a kid that looks like he could be David model,...
ANYTHING RELEVANT to drawing an Animorphs comic!!!
PLEASE POST!!!
-
Well, for what it's worth, the newer developments in the Midwest look like they've been cribbed straight from California.
-
...I think it would be really helpful to have one of the CA residents walk around and snap lots and lots of photos.
I could do it. Just let me know what you want pictures of. :P
-
Well, I'm always struck by just the overall feel of walking down the street. It's hard (probably impossible) to put into words.
If I were doing this, I'd keep a camera with me, step outside, and just start snapping pictures--especially when I think "hey this looks like something the Animorphs would see." Once you start looking for that, it should probably just jump out at you.
-

The cave complex is very big, and your picture is cool but I always thought it'd the Yeerk Pool at the beginning... 3 years or so before the Animorphs ^^'
In the first book, if I remember well, they say it takes about the half of the city... so more than 1 km by 1 km... can you imagine? When you come inside, you can't even see the end, the other side...
And there are buildings on the floor, so how could it stay like that? I imagined there were colonnades or something to maintain the ground...
I don't know how you can picture that... ^^'
-
how i pictured the yeerk pool was like a massive subterranean cave system with a massive upturned bowl for the main yerk pool, but with caves branching off to other areas, such as warehouses, and storage areas
-
Yeah, I also supposed there would be a lot of storage areas in mini-caves... But when the Animorphs entered the first time, I think they couldn't see them, and they already saw something huge! and not finished (the bulldozers still working)...
-
if you guys want i can ask katherine which city she had used in the books as a reference...
-
if you guys want i can ask katherine which city she had used in the books as a reference...
That would be so cool if it was actually Santa Cruz! Please do ask her!
-
Yeah, the Yeerk pool would have to be done as this vast dark purple-lit underground place. One can't see the other side. They could fly Bug-Fighters in there!!!
I'm gonna get on to some floor-designs of the cages area that ring around the 100ft pool (though I ALWAYS pictured the actual pool being bigger).
Followed by outer rings of storage sheds, large rectanguar facilities and buildings. By the nearest walls, some tunnels that connect to other sections and some dropshafts and staircases (do you guys think there should be numbers, like coded for the entrances/exits for identifying which secret entrance a Controller is to chose).
if you guys want i can ask katherine which city she had used in the books as a reference...
Really wanna know HOW people have access to KA.
When is she going to pop back in? There are so many questions to ask her and Michael!!
Anyway, on the topic of alien weaponry, when I saw this gun I thought "Shredder":(http://www.geocities.com/buckrogers_nz/tvprops/ray_gun11.jpg)(http://www.geocities.com/buckrogers_nz/tvprops/ray_gun12.jpg)
Still no idea how a dracon beam can look cool without looking like torches and without looking like THIS: (http://costumezone.com/images/products/b/bf26.gif)
I presume bc the Yeerks reverse-engineer everything they adopt, anything in their design has to look more clunky than the sleek Andalite design.
Though this gun from the 'Doctor Who' series looks kinda like what I have in mind for a Dracon beam. But I imagine this would be really tricky to redesign and recreate. Nghaaaaaaaaaaaarrrr rgh!
Here are some more weapon props for some old 'Buck Rogers' movie.
-
i think that the Dracon Beam could look like something like one of these, but more specifically, the bottom right one
(http://www.mattelder.com/images/propDesign/TorchConceptDesigns1.jpg)
-
I always imagined them very simples, like 10~15cm long sticks for human-Controllers, about 20cm long for Hork-Bajirs, just a little curved where you take them, a little like pirates' guns ^^'
-
I recently went to a bowling alley, which had some shooting arcade games (time crisis and the like). I was really surprised just how big the light gun was.
So here's some distilled experience for you:
Real handguns are probably smaller than you expect. Here's a medium-size 9mm pistol (Glock 19):
That's roughly the size of a concealable handgun. Competition and service pistols are a little bit bigger.
Like in this video of Todd Jarrett on grip (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4584332856867071363).
To get an idea of the proportions of a holstered handgun: (and also one of the largest rifles around. That is able to stop a jeep with a couple of shots to the engine, and is currently one of the biggest targets for prohibitionists.)
Dracons engineered for Hork-Bajir are larger, but we know some human-controllers have been issued concealable sidearms (Tom, for one).
-
Also, it may be worthy noting that the shredders (Andalite handguns) would be smaller than Dracon beams since their hands are small, and their fingers are tiny.
-
lol i love how you compared the teeny-tiny glock 19 to the M82A1... lol...
-
I just reckon sticks sound too much like the torches used in the show, Dameg.
The torch designs Hunter's posted look clunky, and I like the design yeah, but a standard Dracon Beam is meant to be more pistol-like, and would have to be small enough to be hidden in someone's pocket or jacket.
Something smaller with a streamline would be more like the Andalites' Shredder. I agree on rossabo's point about the size.
On that note, also, should the type used for Dracon Beams be the same as the ones used for Shredders.
The 'laser-shot' sound we've all come to know and identify is the 'TSEEEWWW!! TSEEEWWW!!'
I think, in The Arrival, Ax mentions how he could spot a distinct difference. And I recall in The Andalite Chronicles the shot sound being something totally different, but still 'electrical-laser' sounding, if you guys know what I mean.
I think it was like a 'TSSSAAAAAP!' or something...
My question for you guys is a technical one: Should we maintain the 'shot' sound effect difference (Tseeeewww! X Tsssaaaaap! [or whatever]) that was stated in the Andalite Chronicles, or drop it, like the Ghostwriters towards the end of the series did?!
-
it may not mean much but i myself couldn't bear to lose the Tseeewww (or however u spell it)
-
The 'TSEEEEWWW!' sound is d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y an Animorphs trademark!!!
We are soooooooooooooo not dropping it!!!
My ponder is about the difference between the Yeerk weapon and the Andalite one. Ax says there's meant to be a slight difference. How are we to show it, visually in the text?
-
I'm sorry but I described what I imagined reading the books, I never take care of the books (I can imagine Tobias with blond hair, you know?)... and I didn't imagined them like the torches: the torches seemed too big, and... well, it was torches... I don't like to draw on computer, and it's be really crap, but for you I tried to picture what I imagined...

-
Dameg, your sketches were actually the best representation to show what you had in mind! Don't ever hesitate. A sketch is a sketch!!!
And I can see what you mean for the Dracon Beam and the Shredder. I never really imagined either weapons with a trigger, like our guns. Perhaps they were pressure-sensitive and could be squeezed to shoot?! A knob on top changes power levels. And that shape can be ergonomic for either Controller-types in the Empire.
Awesome Blue!, a few of your pics didn't show. That 'cave' feeling is def something we need to capture when depicting the underground Yeerk Pool.
-
There's a description of the controls of a Dracon in The Underground.

2. Really? which images arent showing up cuz I can see them all
-
You're right, Gafrash.
I imagined the Dracon beams with a button, not a trigger.
I completed my stretch:
(I'm sorry, the hand isn't the good size, but I made it quickly)
-
guys i dont know how much of a help i can be but if you want any specific colour, splashy and possibly cgi like. Then i have my very own tean back here in fiji to design the animorphs comic cover. Ill see if i can upload any samples by this week. If i manage then you guys can judge and tell me if u want my team to cover design.

I really like what you did here, Dameg. I think this is the simplest shape we can do the Dracon Beams in, that at the same time is different to what humans have for weapons. A spiffy design to this shape could make it look less like the TV stuff.
kamalraniga, wicked! How do you and your team go about generating stuff? Show us some stuff asap!
-
I'm glad you like it. I like the simple weapons, and always imagined the Dracon beam quite simple, easy to hide, easy to use...

Any ideas on how the inside of the barn, converted into a rehab center, could look like?!
And I am trying to remember if Cassie's farm was meant to have a pond in it.
-
thats a pretty intersting pic... i reckon that it would have stalls for the seperate animals, and a wall of cages for the birds...

It's meant to be divided in two by a pond or river or something, too, right?!
-
What kind of stuff do you guys picture in the respective Animorphs' rooms?!
Jake was meant to have some posters, (basketball related, I think). Marco was meant to have Independence day or Star Wars or something... Can't remember...
-

marco. or is it too much ;D
-
tht looks about right lol
-
Oh my gee!!!
That's sooooo many items it almost looks copy and pasted.
Hmmm... Marco strikes me as comical, but not the collectible type. Though I picture his room to be 'an organized mess' mess of clothes, school, random items and computer games stuff, I can't imagine THAT many collect stuff on his wall. Heheheheh!
Which one of the boys was a fan of Batman or Spiderman or whatever?!
-
marco was a massive movie and video-game buff,
jake was the sporty type (basketball posters, think Shaq),
cassie i can't see with many posters up, maybe a few animal ones?
but rachel, didn't she have a pin-board with sayings on it?
get me the general time frame of the series (year wise), and i'll see what i can dig up, poster wise for marco
:edit:
some things jake prolly would have up on his wall

Whoa! :D This is gold!
Off course, Jake was a basketball fan. Shaq. And wasn't he meant to have cried when Jordan quit?!
Marco was more of a gamer, for sure. So def Doom and Street Fighter and that.
What kind of items of this genre came during then?!
If anyone sees an Animorph picture perfect bedroom, post them up!!! I am dying to see what's in people's imagination.
I might even spend sometime in photoshop and try to make a collage of what I think of...
-
if the series is set in the mid nineties, then most likely, Doom II: Hell on Earth, Duke 3D (best game ever!) and Street Fighter. as for gaming consoles, didn't marco (or was it jake) who had a nintendo? (or was it a 64?) but i know for a fact that marco had a computer, so he would have had a couple of shooters most likely Doom, and the Duke Nukem games... (i still have my ones)
-
:D I can relate to all of the above. Good oldschool games I too grew up with! :D
Does anyone know if there was more than one different houses Marco and his dad lived in, post-Eva's 'death'?! Were they units? What type of houses were they?!
-
i remember reading about that Marco and his dad lived in an apartment in 'the bad side of town' or something like that... i can also see marco's room littered with cans of coke/dr. pepper/7up/whatever and boxes of poptarts (like my room)
-
Marco and his father changed from an house to another. When Marco's mom "died", they went to live, as said Hunter, "in an apartment in 'the bad side of town'"... and for the 2nd birthday of his mother's death, his father say he wanna change, and they go to live in a house about like Jake's or Rachel's house, and less far from them.
-
I just remembered about this, but there is a RAF photobucket group I made for the RAF award banners. Could use it to organize these images or something, if you want. :P

Hey, it's been a while since I've posted here. I've cut out a few interesting pictures from newspaper articles from here throughout the year. Will post a few here. Love the the stunt the whale pulls, the talons in the tiger, the acrobatics display on the sea eagles and the tough-fighting-back koala. ;)

Trying to find something in different language can help. For those pictures, I looked for the French word of "barn" ;)

I recently posted about a cool Graphic Novel I read based on these escaped zoo lions in Iraq during the war. The Pride of Baghdad is a really good and emotive read, with a somewhat humanized touch to the animals, but it's full of action and appealing artwork.
Anyone else read it?!

Anyone read any relevant and interesting Graphic Novels with animal protagonists??

I saw it on Internet (scanned and in French). I'll take it and read it later ^^
I think I saw another comic book who seems to have beautiful animal drawings, but I don't remember what was the title... I'll see if I can find it again.
Sometimes, to copy other artists is a good way to learn how to draw some stuff and then you can find your own style. Will you do that?

It's just a reference Dameg. I am trying to incentivate you guys on how we can go about this.
But yeah, I might well research on this Niko Henrichon artist. Really liked his work.

Ooh Gafrash, a friend of mine bought that comic for me a while ago... I loved it, the story is amazing, and I really like the coloring style, it's similar to what I'm trying to get with my digital art.

You go gal! I really enjoyed the storytelling there and the way it was done. Needless to say I was shocked by the end, but, that was the point, wasn't it?!

I found another comic book with a lot of animals:
Zoo by Philippe Bonifay & (Pé) Frank
Here a sample:

I don't know for the English version, but if you want to see more pics: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1ZR544Z7 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1ZR544Z7) (password: dream)
Some pages from Kenya must not be bad too:

If you want them: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=997ZU1W6 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=997ZU1W6)
(If you take them, do it quickly, then I'll erase the links)

This is going to sound suspicious, but anyone have/point me some photo references of a major bus port in the Animorphs town area?
More specifically, I'd like some photo references of its bus parking lot, so I can have some inconspicuous elephants and rhinos trash it?
-
Come on, RAF! Let's brainstorm this!
Let's hear some ideas for morphs not yet done by the Anis that could potentially offer a great scene.
If you could choose a brand new morph for the Animorphs to acquire/perform during the comic story, which one would it be? What would that scene involve?
Note: I'm trying to set myself a task. Maybe we'll make it like a competition:
Which ever scene sounds more plausible, gets it somehow featured into the comic I'm trying to make.
